Mark Zuckerberg was the 6th richest person in the world just one year ago. Now, He’s dropped to number 25, losing $79 billion dollars thanks to Meta’s stock price tanking. Mark Zuckerberg’s empire is collapsing all around him.
To illustrate the extent of this disaster, it is important to realize that META was in the top 5 most valuable US companies in 2021. Now, they’ve slumped below number 20, worth even less than Home Depot.
This disastrous fall from grace has coincided with Zuckerberg’s truly dark character finally being fully revealed to the public. As panic has kicked in for the billionaire, his true colors are being prominently displayed for the world to see.

I was pretty upset when I had to log in to Facebook in order to use my VR headset. I have never been a Facebook user but I did spend a bunch of money on a PC and Oculus VR setup, and used them hassle free for years. Then one day got a “you cannot use Oculus unless you log in to Facebook” notification. My VR is collecting dust now, thanks Zuck.

I remember when I was a teen how much I adored Zuckerberg. I thought he was an inspiration, because he proved to me that people who are socially awkward (like myself) can succeed and make it far in business. I wanted to be like him. I watched every interview and followed all his advice. But around the time of Cambridge Analytica, I had to start questioning how much I admired him, and now I can't believe how much I fell for his public image. I feel like the original mission of Facebook- to connect every corner of the internet between you and your friends- is gone. Or maybe that technically already happened at some point, and so once he had to move on to some other mission, everything started to fall apart. Either way, it sucks how terrible Facebook has become. I am way too deep into it to leave the platform, but it still sucks.

Originally, facebook was restricted to those with active University email accounts. If you weren't enrolled somewhere, you couldn't join. myspace was the place for connectivity and interaction. But that began to fall apart once they started allowing unlimited photo uploads, and those add-ons to "pimp your account", which were loaded with glitches and a terrible idea It used to be you were allowed 1 photo upload. And that was your default photo. This was actually great because it forced users to be interactive. Then it upgraded to where you could upload up to 9 photos... which wasn't bad. In fact, that number was optimal. When it allowed unlimited uploads... myspace was no longer interactive. It became a "look at me!!!" convention, which bred competition amongst users. People were no longer interested in interacting with new and interesting people. It was all about showing up their rivals who took better photos of themselves, or even worse, people having children just so they could get their "awwww what a beautiful family comments every time they uploaded family photos... or if they took a lavish exotic vacation, their old acquaintances from high school had to stay in the race by taking a vacation they could not afford in the first place, just to have photos to share that resonated with "see.. I'm happy and successful too" when they're not! Baby trapping became more and more prevalent. Because of the baby trapping, you now have a bunch of women in their mid 30s who bodies are stretchies and cellulite, and are so psychologically damaged from their bad decisions... no one wants them. It's a real problem today, and all because of staged photos and the need to show off

He seemed like a normal, relatively good tech nerd kind of dude in the very early days of Facebook. You can still watch a video of him here on YT from 2005, a year after founding Facebook, where he did a guest lecture for a low level programming course at Harvard. He seemed like a normal guy back then. Eager to continue growing his business, but humble and grounded with humility enough to like and respect. And his voice was the same, but he didn't sound so contrived and... reptilian. I too had a turning point for how I felt about him and the company after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. I stopped using Facebook after that, and ultimately deleted FB, IG and WhatsApp entirely and forever by the following year. I can recall a magazine article (I believe it was Time in 2009) that in retrospect seemed like a turning point for when he was no longer "normal." He said he was determined to beat Google at their own game by using people's personal data to deliver more targeted information and ads to users. It seemed plausible, but revealed he didn't care about people's privacy, he lacked empathy, his ambition was fully in the driver's seat, and he would do anything and everything possible to achieve tech supremacy for his company in the coming decade. Indeed, his business decisions from that point on only increasingly revealed his willingness to sacrifice ethics for higher profits.

Makes me wonder, how much of a genius he truly is. Why on earth does he assume, that VR will be a gold standard for any kind of mass market? That is some utterly under-cooked Lawnmower Man fantasy right there. The reality is that VR is an intriguing gimmick in gaming, but far too inconvenient, inflexible and flat out over-engineered as a general input device. And outside of gaming, it may have some use cases for training software. But that’s about it! There is a reason, why gamers and users in general still prefer mouse and keyboard. And touchscreens in the case of phones, which essentially mimic mouse and keyboard input. It is far more convenient, doesn't cost extra and scales infinitely better because of it. Simply because it has far greater general application. The Metaverse is just Second Life with a laughable hardware requirement. This failure only caught Zuckerberg by surprise, it seems. Seriously: How on earth is that supposed to gain any meaningful market penetration? It doesn't solve anything (for users, that is), that hasn't been solved already in far more simple fashion (like a video call) and comes with a pointless hardware requirement.

Here's something intriguing to think about: The very same day that FB launched to the public, the CIA's Lifelog Project (a means to gather & archive every single scrap of data possible from as many people as possible; ie- data mining) was "officially" shout down (yes, you can look it up). I still just frankly do no understand how they're even spending 10+ billion dollars on their metaverse stuff. Like I know they're working on hardware and a large online platform. But MMOs have a tiny fraction of that budget, and it's not like they're building VR headsets from scratch. Like entire game consoles took less money to develop Hell they've spent more than was spent to develop both the Xbox *and* Playstation. Just to make a line of headsets that they already had a headstart on and a single basic VR app that nobody uses.

This happens every time tech tries to take the remote control away from people. We do not want cable tv, we are not going to forfeit our decision about what we see or who we talk to. He would have made more gains by throwing the algorithm completely in the trash and just letting people manually tag who shows up in their own timeline, so they can meaningfully communicate with who they want to. Thats why people showed up, and when that left, so did they.

Zuckerberg did not do the simple feasibility check before investing in this. However, this project does jibe well with advances in AI. I mean, when AI gets to this level, the metaverse would be where the artificial personalities live.. But we're not there yet.
