That is a really good idea. I will definitely do this to mine. I found your channel when looking at F800 GT videos and I have subscribed. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Kind regards Paul from UK

Thanks, I like the tip, I think this is a good idea. I undersatnd that putting mesh will be an airflow restricction, but I do not think that it is so much as to cause any major concern. It may not be a common occurence for a leaf to be sucked into the air intake plenum/chamber, but it could happenm, so I will look at doing this modification on my next service. I have had my 2012 F800ST for two years ( (now at 80,000klm, I have done 15,000klm) and I have not had a my air filter blocked by a leaf and so I dont think the risk warrants me making a special effort to install the mesh before my next service in 6-12 months (I do my own services). I just cleaned and re-oiled my K&N foam air filter. The filter was pretty dirty. When cold the bike would not idle unless I held the throttle being held open a little bit. After cleaning and re-oiling the K&N foam air filter the bike idled just fine at cold. So having a partially blocked air filter, whether by general small dirt particles or by large particles such as a leaf, will negatively affect the running of your motorcycle, whether it is cold or at operating temperature. I think it it better for the leaf to be be stopped from entering the intake by the mesh at the opening and only temporarily block the intake. The leaf will merely fall away when the engine idles, or at worst, will fall away when the engine is turned off. This is a much better alternative then the leaf being sucked ito the air intake plenum/chamber and be held/trapped inside the intake plenum/chamber at the air filter element itself, at which point the only way to remove the leaf would be to remove the panels, intake plenum etc., a much more involved procedure. Thanks for your time and effort in filming, editing and posting these videos, they are informative.

Interesting modification and usefull in stopping small nesting mammals too. I think it would make negligible air flow restriction as mentioned by another here. Perhaps forming a dome using a tennis ball to increase surface area would address there concerns? For the tape, have you used Self-Amalgamting self bonding - fusing? This may be more durable than PVC electrical tape as the adhesive can degrade becoming a sticky mess and un-wrap over time. Very much enjoy your sharing of your work, knowledge and Workshop, beautiful !

I agree with the idea of a dome net to reduce the flow restriction. What about an air duct from the two false intake ports below the main front light to the intake of the real air duct?Using a CAD and 3D printer this could generate a light "turbo" effect to compensate the drag of the filter.Of course a protection net on the front would be highly reccomended. Just an hypothesis. Not for speed, but more for fuel consumption at the same speed. Thanks for your videos.!

Interesting idea but you have effectively reduced the size of the air intake because of the mesh. The engine is now going to have to pull harder to get the same airflow through the air filter.

@@TheOldMechanic Yes you have. Ask anyone who has experience in airflow or aerodynamics. You need to increase the surface area of the mesh. And just imagine the obstructive effect of a leaf which might be held in place by the vacuum.

Ciao Francesco, sulla F800GT di mia nuora c'è un parabrezza più grande. (non originale) Quindi forse potresti cercare anche un altro parabrezza ? (Google translate)

You can see why the labour costs are so high, too complicated just to take the panels off , I feel it’s a cheaply designed bike unfortunately

There is a lot of plastic all of which seems to be lighter and thinner than on my previous BMWs but it is surprisingly good quality Tupperware. I have no complaints about my F800GT.
