Listen to the undulations a 5th apart for perfect harmony of notes. Faster undulations are sharp, slower undulations are flat. No undulations when harmony is achieved. Listen carefully. This is why many violins have only one fine tuner. One string in tune is all that is required to tune well. Thank you for your commitment and lessons.

Thanks so much for all your help!! I play the guitar, mandolin, banjo and piano... and now I'm trying my hand at the violin... just got my violin its a Cremona SVR800 and the bridge wasn't installed... your video made it very easy for me to install the bridge and tune it up... and apply the resin to the bow!!! your teaching is very clear and thorough!!! I will be checking out your course!!! Dave

I played for 6 years through junior high and high school and we learned to tune by ear by listening to the waves starting with the a string. It's quite different now but I just now started picking it back up. Really quite enjoying it.

OMG, I LOVE "THIS IS NOT A GUITAR!" When I got my first violin and I went to tune it...I went through three sets of strings. Finally, a friend of mine who is a violinist for the local symphony said, "This Is not a Stratocaster, you can't just jerk and twist the tuning pegs!"

On another note, fine tuners actually help keep the tension distrubution before and after the bridge a bit more even; this in turn helps reduce the chance of a bridge collapse and the resultant sound post collapse

I just got my violin today and have been trying to tune it. So far I got all of the strings except the A to sound good. One tuner app says I'm hitting A but another tuner app says im low. And it just sounds terrible. I was thinking it needed more rosin so I added more and all of the other strings sound lovely. The A string just sounds off even when it says its hitting A. I'm not sure what could be wrong. Maybe the part of the bow that hits the A string most needs more rosin? I have a headache now from trying to tune for the past hour 🤣😅 so I think I'm going to call it a day and hopefully can get that string tuned tomorrow so I can start the open string exercises. If not I might just take it to a professional. Any suggestions would be great!

This was exceptionally helpful for me, Alison. Yes, I sure could hear the "good clash" harmony of the strings (especially A/D and A/E). This must be a hard concept to explain to beginners but I understood what you said and what you demonstrated. You do not sound mad nor crazy! 😂 Well, the entire video is brilliant. I love learning from you because you just get down to business and never add "fluffy" information (I don't like fluff). Thank you.

Hi! I have a question, I recently got into playing the violin and I have been trying to tune my violin for literally three days and I just can't seem to get it right it sounds off and weird. I download an app on my phone to tune my violin but it keeps telling me to tighten the string and I'm scared I'm going to pop a string and my pegs also slip when I try to tighten it more, the only string i have tuned at the moment is the D string but I'm beginning to get really frustrated plz help

Alison, on the video timer position 17:14, you have a spelling error. The last two words, "BAS WELL" but I think you meant it to read as, AS WELL. In addition, I understand that each violin string is tuned to a perfect 5th apart. Therefore, starting from the lowest String of G will have an interval of one 5th apart which means the pitch of the adjacent string would need to be tuned to a 5th for D string, and so on. When the violin strings do not sound homonymous together for a perfect 5th interval, the pitches of 5ths are incorrectly in tune with each other - [this is known as a 'beating sound'] when hearing two stings sounding not absolutely together. You will get a dissonant sound when two adjacent strings been bowed together.

Now I'm 25 years old, and I've decide I'm going to buy a violin e your violin course, and dedicate my free time to learn. Thank you so much, you really inspired me. By the away, I have a question for you: it's possible to use the learning for violin to play a cello? I mean, if a person with intermediate level in violin try to play a cello, she would be able to? Or maybe would make it easier to play another string instrument, as the cello? I'm sorry for my bad english, it's not my first language. Thank you so much, I adore you!

My violin teacher was always tuning the violin for me. ( I guess that is half her fault and half mine - she's great by the way and has taught me a lot about the violin). I have been playing for almost 12 years now and I have started tuning my violin on my own about two years ago. I am playing in orchestras and stuff and I am finding it very difficult to tune and have the same intonation with the others. I don't know what to do. Sometimes I practise by myself just tuning open strings but when I am having a rehearsal I don't believe in myself and I am not sure about tuning. Do you have any advise?😅❤ Sorry for the large text🥰

Thank you very much for this video! Would a guitar digital tuner work for a violin?
@tak-el-uc4 жыл бұрын
As long as a tuner is a chromatic tuner it should work for any instrument. The majority of tuners are chromatic but not all, so you do want to make sure you are buying a chromatic tuner. However, as Alison said clipping a tuner to a violin is not as easy as attaching one to a guitar. Guitars almost universally (not headless) have a headstock to clip a tuner on to. If you don't have a tuner already, get the Daddario violin tuner she is demonstrating. You will be happy with it.

Hi just to say I love your videos they have inspired me to start learning to play the violin. I Have a question about the tuner you used, would it work on electric violins? Since most electric violins have solid bodies, they wont vibrate as much as the acoustic so, would you still recommend this tuner or a different one for them?
