I have learned to quilt from youtube. My first quilt was a king size around the world. Took me 7 years off and on to finish it. I am a late bloomer on quilting. I stay away from most patterns in my quilting as I have often felt they were uneconomical with how the fabric is used so I very much appreciate your explanation of how to make blocks with minimal waste at the end. 🙂

I enjoy watching your videos and share many of your opinions. I learned hand-piecing using cardboard templates in the 90s and prefer yardage to pre-cuts. I also have taken up EPP to use up scraps. I take some hexies to work so I have something to occupy my hands while waiting for my computer to reboot.

I make string/crumb blocks, I like 108 wide so that it isn't even bulkier. (I also have yardage for backing, sometimes its just easier to use a wide back.) Wide backs are also good for borders, if your border needs to be longer that a wide back is wide...

I sometimes buy 108 fabric for (1) a seamless back AND (2) fabric for blocks on the front or binding. This provides consistency. I wish 108 were more available. Thanks for the videos.

Me, too, and sometimes, if making a lap quilt, I can get two quilt backs from the 108 width.

Are people asking to use a long quarter (1/3 yard) instead of a fat quarter because of the difference in cost? I've always been a fat quarter buyer.

Long quarter is 9”, 1/3 of a yard is 12”. In the shop, most people ask about yardage because they see what the like on the bolt but there is no fat quarter of that fabric. Also, many people have yardage in their stash and want to use it and the pattern they like calls for fat quarters.
