Thanks for the info on this subject. I love scrap quilts - at the beginning of this year I couldn’t get the lid on my “green” scrap tote so I decided it would be the year of green scrap quilts. My green scraps weighed in at 9.1 lbs. 😳 I’m on my 3rd quilt now and🤞 crossed that I’ve at least used half of the fabric. I’m working on the Harrisonburg quilt from the Virginia Quilt Museum which is a great scrap buster and hopefully my green version will turn out ok.

Don't have a suggestion for an 8.5 inch block, but Tiny Orchard Quilts has a free download of foundation paper piecing economy blocks (square in a square). Sizes included are 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, and 6 inch blocks. She has a youtube tutorial where she demonstrates paper piecing using this block.

Love the Episode💕 Your scrap ideas are very inspiring and simple. It’s important that we learn all the various ways of getting to a pattern. This is the way our foremothers would have done so. I always love your videos… being an Accuquilt girl, I would use the square in a square die. BUT, in this case, I don’t think there’s a die for an 8” block… unless I’m missing it, the biggest block is a 6” one in the 12” Qube. Great ideas on scraps… I need to set that “rule” for myself.

I keep it simple and just piece 4 HST units to get my square in a square block. Specialty rulers Confuse me.

The issue was the quilter was fussy cutting a center block so 4 HST units would not work. It can work in many instances but not in this one.

In your square in a square description it would have been beneficial to have a demo other than showing the ruler as to what you talked about. Very difficult to visualize what you were describing.
