I am glad you told me that. I don't know if it was you , but recently after I said "gals" I got the comment, "Dudes quilt too." I took that to heart.

Lots of good basic information that we can't hear enough. It's easy to swerve into bad habits, so it's good to get back on track. And do I ever have lots of 2-1/2" strips!

Thank you, Maureen! I have a lot of binding strips left over. This would be a great pattern for those.

The simplicity with no seams but the actual blocks having to meet is what makes it so so easy. Thanks for watching.

Another amazing tutorial, I love that you do the math, & you’re inspiring “don’t put the scraps back in the box.” Ditto on the great appreciation from the receiver, & the surprise when someone says, “I always wanted a quilt”

This design also works with random strip widths joined to make the required width overall
@theopinionatedquilter
@theopinionatedquilter 3 ай бұрын
Certainly, you can do that. My pattern had only two identical blocks so the random widths would muddy my desired result. Like I always say, it's your quilt you get to make it the way you want to make it.

With all the stripes and plaids, and blue, brown, green, gray scraps, that is a great quilt for a guy. Always looking for good "guy" quilts that are not full of novelty fabric.

I like your project. I make a lot of donation quilts and may try this one with regular scraps because I don't buy pre-cuts. Because you are the Opinionated Quilter, I wanted to share my opinion of 2 1/2" strips, and all pre-cuts in general. I hate them. Everything today is 2 1/2 this and 2 1/2 that. There are other measurements that work just as well in quilt making. Pre-cuts started years ago, because some greedy manufacturer decided to group some fabrics together, cut them small, charge more than they cost per yard, and give them a cutesy name so quilters would buy these "pre-cuts" and the companies could make more money. Some manufacturers cheat even more by the way they cut pre-cuts, making them smaller than 2 1/2" with the pinking edge cuts. I know quilt shops also make a lot of profit on pre-cuts as well, but they are way too expensive for what you get. And because so many pattern designers are associated with the greedy manufacturers, more and more patterns cater to pre-cut sizes to get quilters to buy more of them. Pre-cuts seem to be a scam on quilters, especially as fabric has increased so much in price. I only buy yardage and modify patterns to fit what I want to make, not what some already rich companies want me to buy. That's my opinion.

I agree 100%. I've to buy fabric online no LQS where I live. I bought some charm squares and fqbs on sale and the charm squares weren't cut properly some of the fat quarters were unusable. Karen Brown of just get it done quilts have a very good video on the exorbitant cost of precuts.The pre-cuts I bought were a top name brand. I sent an email to the company but they emailed back saying they didn't deal with the public to which I replied Who do you think buys your fabrics?
@theopinionatedquilter

Have you seen my video on precuts? You are so right. Part of the reason my 2 1/2" strip pile is so large is because people have bought so many of them that they do not get used before their quilting career ends.

I have referenced Karen Brown's video in my video. She lays out how expensive they are. It is a real shame that the manufacturer didn't stand by their product.

Maureen, I'm confused (but that' nothing new lol) Are the rectangles 2 1/2" X 6 1/2"and the sashing 2 1/2" X 16 1/2".? I'm self taught and want to make this quilt but if the rectangles are 2 1/2" X 6" finishing at 5 1/2" will the block be 15 1/2" by 16 1/2" ?
@theopinionatedquilter
@theopinionatedquilter 3 ай бұрын
There is no sashing between the blocks. The Block is made up of five rectangles. Two are the strip set pieces, there are two background 16 1/2" X 2" cut top and bottom and there is the last background rectangle 16 1/2" X 2 1/2" in the middle. Your block will be 16 1/2" unfinished and will finish to 16" square.

I have a 1/4 inch foot but I am wondering if there are any feet out there that are more than 1/4 inch. I find that 1/4 inch does not give you much leeway, I know it saves fabric but I would like a bit bigger.

But, if you use only a part of alayer cake, or jelly roll, or whatever, the unused pieces aren't wasted. They are available for another project.
