Prime 2 is still my favorite game, but surprisingly I don't have much memories of its multiplayer, so why not take a quick look back at this bonus mode.

Honestly, a Side mode where you play as the federation force and go on various missions would be REALLY cool, especially since, while metroid prime federation force may not be what the fans wanted, it is still a good idea in my opinion and could be a very fun online mode

I saw this in my sub box and immediately smiled My brother and 2 of our friends used to play this all the time, but since me and my friend were younger my older brother and his friend always chose shooting gallery and hogged the cannon. They also banned boost ball cause me and my friend were so good at using it. It’s been so long since I’ve been able to give it a fair try because nobody I know personally has played metroid prime as much as I have and it ends up being extremely unfair. Thanks for bringing up all those memories, and I can’t wait to see what you have to say about hunters! I played my fair share of it on the school bus choosing trace and sniping while invisible. Keep up the good work!

I grew up with 9 siblings and this game, double dash, melee, soul caliber 2, f zero, mario party 6, and super monkey ball 2 were our jams, later on I got star fox assualt and the younger kids played that a lot

I remember that the most fun my friends and I had in the multiplayer mode was to go to the top of the Frigate Orpheon, and try to kill each other with only the Morph Ball abilities. So only bombs and the boost ball.

Well, in my area, there were a LOT of Metroid Prime: Hunters players. So we would all go out with the radar mode activated, and back home play with each other online! But it's no more, CFW is disabled, rip.

I gotta disagree with the controller not working. I did play the original multiplayer with 4 people on Gamecube when the game was new- and I gotta say, it's fun. It's a blast with other people. If you're playing with your younger sibling, sure it's gonna suck ass. But if you're playing with kids your age, and everyone's getting competitive, trying to figure out the maps, exploiting eachother as much as you can, it's arguably as much fun as Smash Bros or Halo. I don't think the multiplayer was popular for 2 reasons: 1. The Gamecube believe it or not, was not an ultra popular console at the time. 2. The online component never happened. Remember when Halo 2 really sealed the deal for multiplayer shooters? Yeah, the main reason was it was a goliath in the console wars and it had an online feature. That's not to say that Echoes multiplayer was as polished as even Combat Evolved's was. It wasn't. The map selection was limited and felt small, and let's be fair, it was- partly due to hardware limitations and partly due to lack of development attention. But I feel like in an alternate universe, with the right amount of love and online play, Echoes could have won the day before Master Chief ever met eyes with the Gravemind.

Sorry to say this but Gamecube is the 3 worst selling console by a long mile compared to the rest of the consoles, it did really poorly compared to the N64 it had a Lot of very popular games but it was not a very popular console. It became a Fan Favorite years later when people started playing Gamecube games on the Wii. You can't really compare Halo 2 to Metroid Prime, when it comes to terms of controllers and design, specially as Metroid Prime is not a first person shooter, it uses those mechanics but its a 3D platformer, and all the control inputs are for Movement, and the use of tools rather than Shooting, to the point they had a Lock On System to make it easier on the player movement. Halo was design as a Shooter from the ground up everything was designed for shooting, and with multiplayer in mind. Metroid Prime had neither of these and the multiplayer was nothing but just a side thought. Your second point Online, that wouldn't have done anything. Metal Gear Solid 5 is an amazing game series, but wasn't designed for multiplayer and the online was a requirement asked by Konami, but you don't see anyone talking about how great it is.

​@@gabmanman You were nice enough to leave a well thought out reply so I thought I'd respond. Yes the console now, after the fact, is one of the poorest selling Nintendo consoles. I never said or insinuated that it wasn't. (Actually, I think I alluded to that point.) But to deny that one of the things that made the Xbox so big was the marginally better graphics and the online factor. Xbox was a home entertainment behemoth for that reason. That said, Nintendo was planning on releasing an online expansion for the console, and let's be real, if they had, then a few months later the 'New Gamecube' would have come out with online part of the base hardware. And it seems to me like you've never touched the MP2 multiplayer. Because it is an FPS in every sense of the word. Nearly every FPS of that generation had platforming elements. Sure, the campaign was radically different and more in line with what FPS campaigns are like today with Halo, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, etc. But the core gameplay is still, run, jump shoot. Ignoring that is like missing the forest through the trees. The multiplayer, sure still had the lock-on because the C-Stick was used for Beam Weapons. *BUT*, keep in mind that you still could side step just like you could in Single Player. So even if you were locked on to someone, you weren't guaranteed to hit them by just spamming shots. Lastly, to say that online would have done *nothing* is kind of absurd. Back then online gaming was like what VR Gaming was a couple of years ago. It wasn't just a fad it was a fad on steroids that wouldn't die until the precipice of the current generation of consoles. And even then, you still have diehard advocates for online multiplayer in everything like EA, Ubisoft and Activision. Lastly, to compare online hype now to online hype then tells me you weren't alive for that point in time or really actively gaming with other people. Sure MGS5's multiplayer was trash. But back in 2004, you'd invite some friends over and play online for hours. It was actually that fascinating. Remember when people were all over Chat Roulette? It's that same concept. People are just fascinated by interacting with strangers. TL;DR: Internet was way more of a game changer in the early 2000s than you clearly understand.

VR? tech advancements, the better access to the net without dial up, or the "if they did this. . . " cuz the issue lands on they didn't don't really help your point. Anyhow that outside the matter at hand, again yes MP is not a FPS, you can't really compare action button from Medal of Honor as "platforming" that's like saying Kratos Action Button Inputs on the screen counts as combos, you aren't really venturing in Medal Of Honor nor Halo, metroid prime is classified as an Action Adventure, if anything you can just grab the lowest hanging fruit and compare it to Tomb Raider. The gamecube was a failed attempt to monopolized in the "next gen" because that was still during the era Nintendo tried to compete with Sony and Microsoft, it was a rushed poorly designed console, and didn't help that the regular Nintendo Consumer disliked the Memory Card. So yeah again, MP wasn't designed with multiplayer at hand, causing the gameplay to not translate well causing having 2 players jump around with lock on until one attack lands, game cube was never popular and only the games were, and is not an FPS is a Action Adventure Platformer

My MP2 multiplayer was pretty much how you described it. It isn't a standard shooter, so it isn't newcomer friendly. It's just a mode that you can goof off with exploring all the maps and finding all the paths to the best powerups. Also killing players with the Boost Ball is hilariously disrespectful.

Actually there's a couple games that have done similar concepts. There use to be Armor Mayhem (an awesome Adobe Flash game from back in the day,) and now there is a game called Armajet on Steam and Mobile devices. Aside from the microtransactions I'd say it's a fun subgenre of Platform Fighters. Definitely worth a try.

after replaying metroid prime 2, i gotta say, a lot better than i remember. i remembered it being frustrating, boring, and cryptic. as it turns out, 8-year old me wasn't very good at games. it was a blast to play through, and i found the sky temple keys actually pretty easy to find thanks to the lore. i would agree with you in that the multiplayer is subpar, and i really hope they have multiplayer in metroid prime 4, that's designed more around exploring the map better than your opponent. also, for my metroid prime 4 wishlist, i really want to see a seperate co-op mode that's not mission based like federation force, but rather merely having multiple hunters work toward a wide scale common goal, so basically a normal playthrough but tailored to 2 players(hopefully not 4+).

I was the only kid with a Gamecube and multitaps for other consoles were uncommon and poorly supported so we just gathered at my house and play 4 player split screen for hours. I have an interesting idea for a Metroid multiplayer. Let's say all the bounty hunters from Prime 3, hunters, and even characters like Dark Samus, a Luminoth warrior or Adam Malcovich are playable and have their own play style and abilities. A good idea for a mode besides firefight is to have a single player play as a boss character, such as Ridley, Kraid, Emporer Ing, or even the Diggernaught, and have each of the bounty hunters face off against them at once like a raid. I don't know, any thoughts?

I always felt like Metroid Prime 2's was either inspired, or at least mean to be used to challenge Halo in the multiplayer department. I think it's safe to say that aside from Hunter's multiplayer that Prime 2 didn't surpass Halo (especially 2) in Multiplayer.

So I started to play prime today and was thinking about if we already made a FPS version of metroid what if Nintendo made a VR version of Metroid. I think that it would be awesome. I would also think that everybody that is a fan of Metroid would get all giddy about the idea. I would love it, it might be a mixture of horror and action. I know most people don't have a VR headset (with me included) but I still would think that it would be absolutely amazing I'm giddy just thinking about it. What are your ideas about it? A VR version/support for Metroid Prime doesn’t sound like too bad of an idea for me, but the problem is marketing and wether Nintendo is willing to gamble on it. I know we have Labo VR (I own it) but its more of a novelty distraction IMO. Regardless I think Prime is the perfect game for VR since its not to crazy on the action and the first person is well implemented, just dont think its worth spending resources on atm

Good analysis. I have a few thoughts on multiplayer in Metroid, maybe not in Prime 4, but in the future: 1. I personally would like to see an amalgamation of the echoes multiplayer and the hunters multiplayer. 2. That bounty mode could have some serious potential if they could have it set in a larger world similar to the single player world. 3. It would also be cool to see a mode where you play as either federation troops or space pirates in various war situations. I'd want it to be heavily based of off Prime 3 and the various battles in that game. The art style would need to be similar to Prime 3 as well, not like it was in Federation force. I think playing as the Federation could've had major potential if it was based around what you see of the federation in the Prime series. I liked the multiplayer mode in Echoes, but I never had people to play it with when I was younger. Now, all my friends think that I'm too good at it. RIP

I played prime 2's multiplayer on gamecube... All i can say is, those orb launchers are a bit broken, and finding a way to break weapon locks is vital. Morphing into the morph ball or boosting seemed to work most of the time.

Dude I loved Custom Robo too. I liked how tons of games had multiplayer in one way or another. Even player 2 during story mode for Shadow the Hedgehog. I never got to play much with these since I didn't have friends or family that wanted to play GC with me when I was younger. Great video.

Federation force happened to test the waters per se of an online Metroid fps. Nintendo currently offers no first party FPS title on the switch. My bets are entirely on Prime 4 being Nintendo's Halo.

Gotta disagree with the GameCube control not being made for fps (because of the C stick/"much smaller secondary analog stick") as my little sister and I had no problems playing either of the Time Splitters games or any of the James Bond 007 games on the GameCube. I would however agree that Retro's (and I guess Nintendo's) decision to use the single player's control scheme for it's multiplayer made it less than ideal to play MP2's multiplayer when compared to other fps.

I just hope, that if they add multiplayer to MP4, they don't take the idea of different Hunters from MPH and mix it with Hero Shooters, like Overwatch. I just prefer a normal shooter when it comes to such things. Of course, perhabs with Nintendos magic touch I might end up liking it, but I'm not so sure.
