For those who failed to understand the message of the song, the song is not about belittling the country, but about: "The millions of people who had their history written for them, and how they felt they couldn't escape it. It's about being told what to do, about being told what to believe in - which is, in a nutshell, the story of America's youth." Bob Boilen

dude free speech isn't just an American thing like I'm an American but honestly why are americans so full of themselves for having the bare minimum of rights like cool we have "free speech" but we also live in a police state where protestors are arrested for exercising that right. on paper we have free speech but so does almost every other developed country we aren't special or better
@midobecker1
@midobecker1 8 жыл бұрын
I have never made such distinction. I am not bragging about America. I am just saying we have the freedom of speech in our country. Yes, we also live in a police state. Yes, we have a violence society and we have a bitter twisted idea about patriotism. But, I love my country as much as I appreciate other cultures because I have lived in other places. Yes, we have problems, but last time I check it is almost the same case for most europeans and other developed nations. By the way, you get arrested in most developed nations when you are protesting on the streets as well. I don't intend to glorify where I live, but I also know negativity is not the solution either. We can point out our problems but few dare to bring real solution to the problems.

Despite what some may think, this is probably one of the most unapologetically American songs I've ever heard. Feeling trapped into a fate you cannot control. The story of millions who came to America unfortunately, to the Irish and African peoples and even the English, French and Germanic settlers. No one goes to that country unscathed it seems.

There’s a monument in Boston by the garden that shows the timeline of immigrants and the corresponding hardships/ discrimination they felt. Irish Americans in NYC; Italians, African Americans, Muslims in the early 21st century, Jews etc. it’s pretty interesting and sad how the hate transfers over time to new groups of people tryna better their lives but an important monument nonetheless

This song isn't necessarily anti-American, so don't just draw conclusions. The song is about, "The millions of people who have had their history written for them, and how they felt they couldn't escape it. It's about being told what to do, about being told what to believe in- which is, in a nutshell, the story of America's history." That was said by Matt O'Keefe, guitarist for the band.

Listened to Disgraceland five times in a row last night, and I didn't even realize that until this morning when I woke up. North Ave. is currently my personal favorite off the album; the nagging melody (especially the ingenious guitar sounds) and lyrics just give off that funny nostalgic feeling for whatever reason. Bathroom Tile Blues is also extremely addictive. Very bluesy, obviously. Actually, every single track is fueled by exquisite vintage-sounding guitar hooks, infectiously catchy drum beats, and just gives off that overwhelmingly optimisitic rush of energy. Just pure and straight up rock and roll stripped down to its barest essentials and none of those intricate bullshit. It is designed for the average listener to JUST HAVE FUN, dance along and feel youthful. This is THE album to listen to if you want to kickstart your day with a pumped-up load of adrenaline rush and get rid of those blues.

I've listened to this song about 50 times in the last 3-4 hours! It's just makes you wanna dance, and move around and do things! So energetic! To think that I was in a bad mood, this song changed it COMPLETELY!!

Cant believe you guys are still argueing about this kick ass rock tune, Im 62 and I kinna think I know true rock when I hear it.We all did it,back in my day rage against the machine, But you gotta understand the new youths rage,and remember yours back then at your own age. I say rock on Young people please help us old timers to better days,its all now in your hands,Hope you guys can do better than us baby boomers did.

It seems like the people who have criticized the band are rock elitist's who hate any new band that came out after the 90's. If you're going to critique the band, give reasons. Don't call them poser kids simply because they play a simple style of rock.
