Hiker from Sweden here. So what people do not realize is the problem was not the temperature in itself. Following this guy we know he has seen worse temps in some of his adventures. The problem was, and the reason he sent out an emergency call, the winds. The windeffect can make -4 seem like -25, and in those temperatures, with intense snowing, and really no way to make a proper fire, it is very difficult to survive if you have not seen those conditions before. Let that man rest in peace and be remebered forever in our adventure hearts

I agree. He's dealt with snow before, and cold temperatures. Wind was the major issue. Based on what we know, the wind was 120 km/h. That is very strong, add in blowing debris from the trees and you've got a very serious situation. We can speculate all we want on what happened, but in the end, he was forced to leave his shelter. We don't know what caused his broken nose, he could have tripped, walked into a tree or been hit with a flying tree branch. All of which could have possibly knocked him out unconscious, from which he may have not woken up. He could have also succumbed to hypothermia, which could be why he left his shelter too. There are too many variables at play. We weren't there that night, so we don't know what happened and we may never know. All we know is that a bright young videographer, who loved nature and wanted nothing more than to share his passion with us, has tragically died. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and KZbin followers. Rest in peace Storm. P.S. I am a subscriber of his and will continue to re-watch his videos. They are beautiful works of art, and they help me recenter myself when I am unable to go for a hike after a tough day at work. Thank you for the beautiful videos Storm. I'm sure you're in a better place now. Rest easy my, friend and know that you were loved very much. 😢❤

Finnish hiker here. I have done many hikes in northern Lapland in Finland and one in Norway. In that enviroment, every trip made after mid august, you should prepare to them as a winter hike. Snow can come any day after that point. Your gear has to be NORDIC winter gear, and that means tents that can sustain heavy snow load, winter rated sleeping pad, and sleeping bag that has at least -5C comfort rating. Anything less than that is risking your own life. Sad story al in all.

very responsible thinking! unfortunately, people tend to underestimate mother nature and overestimate their capabilities. i'm not talking about Storm but people in general. Being in outdoors comes with responsibility and forward thinking because it's all fine and dandy until something unexpected happens, be it a sprayed ankle or a storm. hypo/hyperthermia, dehydration, getting lost, no emergency communication, etc. This is why "just don't overthink it! go out and enjoy yourself, sleep in the forest" mentality makes me angry.

Hi Luke. Norwegian here. From the neighboring country of where he was found. He was found in a mountainous area named "Ultevis Fjällurskog", a nature reserve northwest from the place called Jokkmokk. From a local Swedish newspaper: "When the blizzard hit with full force, the 22-year-old had been hiking in the mountains of Lapland since October. He spent the night in a tent, and brought food and equipment to survive for a long time, without outside assistance. But the violent wind, which came upon the experienced hiker completely unexpectedly, was to prove fatal. In the gusts of wind, trees were uprooted. The temperature in the area must have been minus six, but due to the wind the effective cold must have been down to minus 18 degrees." He had also suffered a broken nose, and have been reported to have left his tent during night. They found the tent later on, about 15 kilometers from where his car was parked. It was supposed to be the last night of this particular trip. They write that he was found dead quite far from where he had placed the SOS call. They speculate in his tent blowing away, forcing him to start walking. Sad story for sure. Reminds us of the forces of nature. Up here in the north of Europe, we know that in the mountains, even during summer, the temperatures can suddenly drop and you can experience all 4 seasons during 24 hours. Even snow.

He could have dug deep, acted like a smug know-it-all, and trashed him as inexperienced, blaming him, He actually talked to the pac's family! Do you think they would have shared any info at all if they thought he was just going to trash him and/or to gain 'sympathy' likes? Obviously, there is either way too much or not enough info on a whole slew of cases like this from around the world. We learn from our mistakes, and it didn't sound like this was something he had learned by hunting/fishing/hiking with his family, which would explain why there were no specifics on gear🙄! Do you expect the police to list off every item, serial number, and brand of gear the lad had with him? They don't generally print itemized lists for public consumption! Sounds like you are the only rude, obnoxious, ill-tempered, and disrespectful person here! If you don't have anything nice to say, then kindly sit down and STFU, eh?

RIP Storm Remember, the first thing to go as you body begins to shut down from the cold is your HIGHER THINKING. Many people are found like this, backpack left and sleeping bag with it. Essentially, people lose their mind, their ability to think and reason when the body temp drops. Then, they do crazy stuff like drop the backpack and sleeping bag. Lesson: If you are starting to get cold, realize that your ability to reason will be compromised: Make good decisions early on, hunker down and get warm.

I was a SERE instructor in the Army, and have spent most of my life roaming the mountains/forests of Colorado, and even with all that experience, I failed once to anticipate a nasty cold snap that dropped temps to 20 below with wind chill. All I had with me was my fleece pullover and a North Face shell, and a 6 mile hike to get home. Blowing snow, wicked wind speeds over 20 knots, and about halfway home I could feel my core temp dropping, even hiking thru the drifts. I had to slow down, go slower to avoid sweating, and being able to make that choice when it "felt" like I HAD to go faster made the difference. I can totally understand if that guy got confused, maybe a bit panicked, and it ended up costing him everything. All the experience in the world doesn't matter when a single mistake can end it. One thing I learned over the decades is NEVER skimp on outdoor gear, buy ONLY high value, durable equipment that you can depend on. Most of all, never overestimate your abilities, Nature doesn't care whether you live or die, it's up to YOU to keep yourself alive.

I just want to learn, as I'm a long time fair weather backpacker, first time winter backpacker (I've only got one trip under my belt), in his case, what would be the proper procedure given the situation? With an injury and wet gear, I probably would have just sent out the SOS and held my position in my sleeping bag inside the tent. I understand a lot of variables will change the outcome of what needs to be done, but I'm here to learn if you're willing to share.
@eloquentsarcasm
@eloquentsarcasm Ай бұрын
@@antnguyen In general, if you're wounded and have a decent shelter that will keep you dry and warm, holding fast is the best option. Being wet AND injured is a series of possible disasters waiting to happen. Hypothermia can hit you fast as wet clothing will constantly leech your bodyheat away and with an injury to worry about, your attention won't be focused on your environment nearly as much as it should be. A locator beacon is a bit pricey, but the peace of mind it can give in an emergency is huge, and it can save your life.

Another scandinavian here: On a Swedish "outdoors club" type of web-forum, from what I can gather, the area Storm was hiking in has a bad reputation that time of year. Sentiments were in the neighborhood of "what would even an experienced hiker have been doing out there at this time of year?", with undertones and a couple of comments outright saying that it's a particularly challenging, inhospitable place (even for the locals who know the area well) as winter approaches. One commenter even went so far as to say that "nobody" goes into that area, in that season, except the Sami who have reindeer out there. Not that I think anyone meant any of it as disrespect either, but rather in honest curiosity/meandering about what drove the decision to venture into that area. There were also apparently also weather warnings several days in advance, and depending on where exactly he was found the snow would have been as deep as 30 centimeters. Being a foreigner, it's presumably possible that he was not privy to where to check for weather warnings (or maybe he'd been out of bounds since before the warnings were issued). Furthermore, while the police have refrained from confirming exactly where he was found, reports have surfaced that give very precise indications as to the area he was in - and by the looks of it, chances are that he had ventured out of the forest and was relatively exposed on a barren mountainside. By all accounts, a deeply unfortunate event that really showcases the importance of proper research and preparation for the area you are going into.

Exactly. And outdoors people should always have an eye on the weather forecast. I don't know how the Sami dress but I'm assuming they would be wearing fur, not gortex. I'm from Canada where it goes down to minus 40 in the winter and my mother always wore a fur coat. She is Scandinavian.

@@mountainstream8351 Sami "dress uniform" is not what they'd be wearing out at work, generally - they'd just wear regular water- and windproof winter clothes, with multiple layers beneath. They're also, generally speaking, quite familiar with weather conditions, not bereft of good sense and would thus probably have spent this night indoors, possibly in front of a cozy fireplace. Source: My great-grandfather was sami, my father was born in the "sami lands" and I've lived and worked in Kiruna.

We were commended for staying in the same place even though we were very exposed on a ridge. We were buried under ice for approximately 12 hrs in gale force winds. One of my rescuers explained the 'Swiss cheese effect' Of decision making that leads to these kind of preventative situations. While setting up my tarp I started shivering. I did exercises, clothed myself up really good but I noticed I had a cotton shirt on from work. I forgot to change it before the hike. It didn't help. Removed my wet shirt, got under my tarp out of the wind and rain, brewed up hot beverage and food while in my sleeping bag. Didn't help. By then 1h passed. Thank god I always plan emergency plans. Even in rural area I was in. So, called my back up to get me to my car. Once there I put on the heat on max, ate and drank hot stuff and drove home. Around halfway with heat still on max (1h and a half) I got out to pee. The cold struck me and started shivering again...heavily. Being prepared for such harsh conditions is an essential. There is another thing that is just as essential is to listen to internal warnings. There were times when I didn’t even start an adventure, and at times even pulled the plug in the beginning, all because something didn’t feel right, there was some sense of knowing that I shouldn’t go that day. I have learned to listen to this inner voice/gut feeling because whenever I didn’t I did face things I’d rather not have to deal with. Couple of times it came close, and it got my attention. This isn’t to be confused with anxiety or worrisome mindset. I think we all are familiar with our inner voice when it warns us of something. A great example of this is Alex Honhold, when we was doing a solo climb is Yosemite park. He started the historical climb, and felt like something wasn’t right, and he abandoned the mission to come back at another time. We don’t know for sure of things would have been well or not, but it’s better to play safe, as we only have one life here on earth. Sad for the kid, he was so young.

That is so sad about Stormy. In my days of windsurfing in cold water, we were very aware of the dangers of hypothermia. The mythology around the warning emphasized that people become calm and euphoric prior to losing consciousness. The moral to the story was to return to shore or find a way to get warm prior to feeling like you need to. Like rehydrating before you get thirsty, getting warm before you start feeling that nice euphoric hypothermia feeling is critical to not losing consciousness. If you are not aware of how hypothermia can trick you, you might misjudge your capabilities and keep going. This was particularly risky when windsurfing and having a blast chasing faster wind. Windsurfers need to plan ahead because it might take 20 minutes to take that fast ride and 40 minutes to tack back and forth to return to shore. I rarely hear campers discuss hypothermia other than on this channel. Thanks for being vigilant about safety.

Tragic story. I have watched all his videos in KZbin and I noticed that in all of them he just used lighter to start fire. A lighter in negative temperatures will not work unless you warm it up. He had reasonable skils to process wood to start a fire (having tinder, kindling and fuel), but maybe he struggled with the ignition method he had (lighter) in freezing temperature. Always carry lighter, matchs and ferrod!!!! Greetings from the woods in Sweden

@@davidhawkins847 👍 Good point. I don't know how well he was equipped and what backup additional clothing he had with him. That said, many tend to, on extended hikes, to skimp on the additional gear and 'multi-task' in order to save weight. Fine when all is good .. but when the bad stuff comes in .. I tend to 'more than less' .. unless I can 'bail' where / whenever I wish and with assistance close by.

I've been in that area before. I was doing some extreme camping. I'm 62 and know that the area he was in can be very dangerous during storms and winter months. Easy to get hurt or even die. This should be a lesson to those who think they can camp and survive anywhere at any time of year. We don't know exactly what happened to Storm, but like I said you must be prepared for anything in the wilderness. Snow storms are no joke. Hell, rain storms are no joke. I don't think he was completely prepared for what he was getting himself into. Being over confident is never good. No matter how good you are, you can always be better. God bless all of you! Take care Luke.

My husband once gave me a hard time for spending over $300 on a sleeping bag when I could have picked one up for 1/10th of the price at Walmart. He changed his tune when I explained that, when it comes to life or death scenarios, I wouldn't want to risk my survival over saving some money. That $300 bag has seen me through many frigid winter nights camping in the mountains. Having the proper gear and knowing how and when to use it, is a must!

If you try to be thrifty in survival gears, your chances of survival is much lower. In 1999-2000, I think it was, the year before my thru-hike, a long distance hiker from the north east (US) attempted the Florida Trail, starting from the southern terminus. He brought minimal clothing, thinking it didn't get cold in Florida. We had a freak cold front come through and it was unseasonably cold (20's-30's°F). They found him in a pasture in South Florida, he had passed from hypothermia. It doesn't take a lot. Even in summer in central Florida, if I get soaked, that rain is cold, temperature drops, wind blows, body core temperature drops and you have hypothermia. I'm glad Storm found the connection he (we all) yearn for. Mad respect. Brave man.
