It's interesting hearing all the details from this mortician as a Muslim because as part of our religion we don't do any embalming or cosmetics after death. Once dead, the body is washed in a particular way by the closest family members of the same sex as soon as possible and the deceased is buried in a plain pine coffin, generally and ideally within 24 hours. All of the funeral ceremony and viewing is basically combined into one ceremony where the family and friends do a prayer, view the body and then the body is taken directly to the graveyard. Tbh I'm not exactly sure why there's no embalming other than so the body can decompose naturally and go back into the earth over the time. As the funerals and viewings are done within 24hrs there really isn't any need for keeping the body viable for viewings for several days or even a week or more - which I've seen happen in several funerals for various types of Christians and a reformed Jewish family as well ... Very interesting stuff for some reason lol

@@MoAli-wm4of it used to be the same way here in the US but the death industry has taken over. I believe that's why people in the West view death in such a taboo way. We are no longer close to it. Back in the day the family would wash the body, have the service in their home (this was what the living room used to be used for) then they would be buried in a simple pine box.

He was buried in his favorite shirt, blue jeans, and his favorite cowboy boots. He had his reading glasses in his shirt pocket, his favorite cowboy hat on his chest, and his dog's (who had died a month or so before him) cremains at his feet in the casket. Real talk Theo, talking to people like this is important not only to help with public perception of industries like these, but to help break down the taboo of death in general. There were a few questions that made me recoil, especially when the subject of dead children was broached.. but I think that talking to people like these on popular podcasts such as yours is very important to tearing down taboos and ultimately making death and such less wierd and uncomfortable on top of grieving.. you know?

My friend got murdered this year and when I went to the funeral it was odd as I knew him since we were both young boys, like 7-8 years old and im 32. He succumbed to a heroine addiction in his late 20's and lived on the street, we completely lost touch after some assault charges a few years back but i always hoped he'd find his way but nah, he got stabbed to death outside a homeless camp by a river. We hadnt been friends in years and he never really wronged me , but I could tell there was animosity toward him there at the funeral. I tried to talk during the funeral and my emotions were too much and i like choked my way through it. The older I've gotten the more empathetic I've become so it always amazes me how well funeral directors, pastors or morticians seem to handle it fairly well and talk and go about their business professionally. Neat guy to talk to Theo 👍

You are right about the fact that addiction changes people and eventually leads them to becoming tge worst version of themselves but i don't that your drug of choice makes you better or worse than the next addict. I don't know what drugs you do or did but i know that i'm not any better than you because of it.
