Great interview, nice to hear all the caviats of running a painting studio. I've started comission painting full time nearly two years ago (and I'm Peachy's age, well couple months older actually). It was the best decision of my professional life to quit my normal job, but to be honest, it has been a completely different experience then I expected. It's absolutelly impossible to put hobby and comission painting side by side cause those are completely different things. I have had a few things that really surprised me, the biggest one being that during those two years I've only had a few days off, painted hundreds of minis and terain pieces and only a few days ago I received my first GW comission. It's also the hardest job I've ever had, but at the same time the best one. Geoff - a podcast without army and barber shop stories wouldn't be the same ;) Patrick - if I didn't have a website, I would be sold by your add ;) Cheers

Thought we'd already dropped a comment :/ It's a great episode and Siege has a big place in our hobby hearts with their studio artist Nick very generously painting a miniature for Lad in that testing year of 2020. James clearly has a great mindset for building a nurturing business and it'd be awesome one day to see Miniature Artist Apprenticeships being a thing. Great chat between the 3 of you.

Please, please, please do a little video series on learning to airbrush. I bought one a year ago had about 3 attempts at using it. I got so fed up of cleaning it 10 times more than I actually used it for painting that I’ve hardly used it and it’s just sat gathering dust

The discussion on commissions and pricing was so interesting- its similar in the knitting and quilting hobby. People are constantly telling me to do commission knitting and then I explain materials and paying myself minimum wage and they’re amazed by how time intensive it is to produce something beautiful by hand. There’s a lot of self-exploitation in those hobbies where people constantly underpay themselves.

Excellent chat. Really interesting and a very likeable guy. Agree 100%, it is a trade and should never feel bad about charging for your time when your time as a skilled professional is a valuable commodity, I worked for myself for years as a gas engineer before being on the other side of the desk now and the labour I charged was because I offered a specialist service and am skilled in what I do. Really impressed in creating a happy place to work and wanted the right personalities for the job over just skill. Good luck for the future, sounds like you're flying!

I think commission painting, be it simple army's or high end pieces is really undervalued. I've no experience of doing it myself but I do know the time, effort and skill it takes to paint my own miniatures let alone the ability professional painters have. When I saw peaches commission video where he was aiming to make roughly ten quid an hour I couldn't help but feel the rate was too low for someone of his talent and it was a real eye opener with regards to the challenges of being a pro commission painter. Fair play to you guys in the profession making it work!

I thought your discussion on criticism was pretty fascinating in particular (the whole vid was a good chat). I always come from the point of view of being nice to someone who has spent the time painting a miniature, regardless of whether or not it's of a high standard or not. If they've gone "hey I thought this was cool" then I am all onboard for going "yeah dude, this is excellent and I like this and this" and focus on the positives. Obviously, as you say - if someone wants meaningful criticism, I'll give it, but usually someone has put a LOT of time into something and I always like trying to celebrate that :)

Fine arts, that's what good miniature painting is. Trouble is people don't want to pay for it. They go well your price is too high, no my price is based on my skill and experience and time, not your perception of what it's worth. Some one can do it cheaper, good hire them, see what you get. I can't be a commission painter cause I won't "paint down" and I would lose money. I really respect the ones who can paint to a brief and stick to it. It's a discipline.

Thank you for this video. A little over 2 years ago I started doing commission work for gamers in my local game store. Over this time frame my client count continues to keep growing. I started it as a means to pay for my hobby while I get more experience. Now my full-time job is becoming something that I dread going to and am considering going full-time with my painting. I have had my concerns about increasing my prices since it will be my primary source of income. However, talking to most of my clients they seem willing to pay whatever I choose to charge. If I had one question to ask for James or Peachy, how did you find the transition to full-time artist go for you?
