I remember when they made the switch from Lead to White Metal (pewter) in the early 90s, the message at the time was "Its crisper, Its safer, but its a bit more expensive" and that was...fine. I think if they'd have just kept the cost the same or maybe even dropped the price by £1 or 50p, the good will might have been better, in the end it just felt like bad profiteering.

With the plastic pricing discussion, I always want to keep on my mind that the 3rd ed plastic guardsmen came out at £15 for a box of 20 or 30 guard, and before the new guardsmen came out, it was £30 for half of the bodies, even though it was the exact same model in the box for the last 20+ years

I found Tom talking about blister packs being boring really interesting. Because I had just read Talking Miniatures and in one of the interviews they talk about what a revolution blister packs were when Bryan Ansell introduced them and how a lot of retailers were at first hesitant to stock them. Before GW introduced blister packs, miniatures were sold in little plastic bags with carboard stapled to them and usually weren`t displayed, but stocked in drawers. Retailers were anxious that hanging up blister packs might make it easier for people to steal them. At the time having all miniatures displayed in full sight in professional packaging with nice artwork printed on the cardboard was a really new thing and led to increased sales.

Blisterpacks were better than being stuck in a drawer behind the counter, but are not nearly as good as the newer packs with art cards. As a customer, it's infinitely easier to find a newer pack I'm looking for in a wall of product, and it's way more aesthetically appealing to have colors and art than the old wall of grey.

I remember looking up the price of bloodknights (after experiencing the awful fines cast with mandrakes) and deciding I was fed up with fine cast lack of quality and high prices and went and bought a 3D printer instead. For about £15 I found files online that looked amazing and printed much better quality models AND bought some bases. I'm glad they're slowly replacing all these awful resin kits. It's actually down to gw that I now have a 3D printer and have managed to print loads of stuff for a fraction of the price

At the time when "Fine"cast was being touted as the new next big thing from GW, I was dubious about it as I had (and still do) an all metal Grey Knight army and didn't want my beloved models to go away. Anyway, running up to it's release I remember reading somewhere in a White Dwarf that GW actually said that "Fine"cast was "cheaper to make": they then promptly put the prices up and were charging more for the same models. That put me off right there. And then came the issues people were having: holes everywhere, miscasts, missing limbs etc etc. Awful quality control. But the thing which really stuck in my mind, was that GW used the classic Emperor's Champion model in their advertising pitch: a model widely regarded as one of their best, and rightfully so. This particular one however, had a miscast front and centre on it's chest. Pretty much says it all, really. I refuse to this day to have any "fine"crap models in my collection.

On the subject of the scraper tool, I generally still prefer a knife but it does come in handy. One use I did work out recently is that it can be quite good when assembling push fit models. I have an older one but it’s just about the perfect size to ream out the holes for most of the pegs. I know you can just cut them off if you want. But if you enlarge the hole ever so slightly, you get the benefit of the pegs guiding things into place without the excessive force that can break thinner components. Then just dab a bit of thin glue on the joints.

It's the absolute best. Scalpel for mold lines initially, then a pass over with the mold line remover and a quick run over with Tamiya Extra Thin if it's a tricky line. Absolutely foolproof!

I started Eldar during this finecast shift. And I got a pack a fire dragons, with flashing 3 layers thick, i needed a scissor to cut through it. And then scrap off the flashing that went through every helm… I got banshees, and i went through 7 or so boxes for 10 good ones, and took about 3-4 months of work. Luckily, Customer service was excellent, so i only paid for 2 boxes.

I'm probably one of the few people that actually benefitted from finecast 😆 I wanted to make a squad of miniature battlesuits so bought three finecast shadowsun models. There were no big flaws in the three I got and the soft resin made them much easier for me to chop and change the posing, weapons etc. I also had some finecast XV-15s that had no issues, guess I just got very lucky!!

Having now fully watched this I love the mentions of obscure things like the Unifroms & Heraldry books. I own the Skaven one and even used it in a video recently where I map out my planned Old World Skaven project. I also have that old Citadel Spray Gun, had plans to turn it into a flame weapon for LARPing as it was designed to look like a hand flamer. Sadly it sits in a Drop Pod box not getting used, loved using it for base coating. I wish I could have interjected on some of the discussions, I had a run of bad castings of Deathmaster Snichk, one had a massive "v" where his arm was meant to attach, another had a bubble cutting up him cloak, in the end I gave up on him. Still have a Finecast Queek in my bits box, but I own multiple metal ones meaning he's doomed never to get used. I've got those Jezzails I mentioned built and they're on my desk getting Speed Painted alongside 20 Clanrats and a Ratling Gun. I think I'll be watching more of these podcast videos while painting, some interesting discussions and memories brought up.

This hurts hearing they were doing plastic Mirkwood warriors in plastic, I have atm 70 finecast Mirkwood warriors and all the fine cast heroes for that army and whilst now they look great cleaned up and painted the whole process of getting them to that point was horrible! The Mirkwood rangers and Palace guard which were plastic were a joy to build and paint but like Peachy said you don’t need many of the guard 8 max is needed in most armies. If I could’ve got any model in the range updated for plastic it would’ve been the Mirkwood warriors

Three things I always try to add to the conversation about cost: - that box of minis has to pay for everyone involved in the production of that mini, including all the support staff - from the designer, to the painter, to the cleaners, lore writers, rules writers, accountants, HR, packers etc. that mini pays for thousands of people's jobs. - the pricing seems to be related to the volume they expect to sell - marines are cheaper because they sell loads of 'em, so the overall cost of that mini is divided over more boxes. That one random cool unit that's not great in game and is only going to sell 10 copies has to carry a lot of production weight on its hands. And GW has a huge range with a lot of niche choices - inflation is a thing, you can't compare how much your minis cost in the 90s to now. A set of guitar strings was £4 in 1994 when I started playing, they're £12 now. Things get more expensive.

Hey Geoff! Little bit of Buck Rogers trivia for ya here. The Thunderfighter was not actually made for Buck Rogers. Legendary artist Frank McQuarrie actually designed it to be the Viper in the original Battlestar Galactica. Which is why it has two great big fangs on the front of it. Or why it was called the Viper. Whether the name or the design came first is unclear. Anyway, Greg Larson, producer on both shows, re-used a lot of BSG assets when they made Buck Rogers, including the Thunderfighter.

Before COVID I was at GenCon and loitering near the Forge World stand. A customer was trying to exchange a vehicle that was warped. The workers could not find a replacement that was not warped. The manager of the stand was telling the customer that the warpage was caused by taking the part out of the mold way too soon (the parts have to cool for so long or they warp). So, this problem was caused by hurrying the process. I suspect this was ordered by higher ups who just wanted to fulfill sales. And all the layoffs because of overspending was caused by the higher ups. Did any of them lose their jobs?

@@rogaldorn8519 why bring up finecast? the comment is specifically talking about forgeworld resin and incompetent greedy management causing quality issues in the products. moreover finecast is also a resin so its about 90% the same process in manufacturing than forgeworld resin except its an inferior product. warpage in resin is usually a result of tension in the material due to uneven or too fast cooling similarly to metal that was quenched wrong after the forging process.

The thing that always got me about GW finecast is how it scared so many hobbyists away from the word "resin". Finecast frustrated me because not all resin material and casting strategies are the same, and a lot of makers put out resin that's really nice. And requires no more clean-up than plastic.

The main issue with GW cases is they are designed for space marines or guard with no spikey bits or banners. Two Thin Paints dropper bottles leak when you shake them, so you have to take the lid off and put your finger over the end when shaking.

However, one of my metal gutter runners has a massive slip line in a position where I can't file it down with a normal file. Bring on the rumored refresh! Thanks of the episode, guys! For what it's worth, the few resin kits I've gotten over the past couple of years from GW (not Forge World) are definitely a different resin than original Finecast. It's a bit more rigid and dense and less "fluffy", so they definitely updated something to improve it. It's still not my favourite material, but it isn't like working with bubbly, stale marshmallow anymore!

I’m not saying there can’t be a component of pay to win but given the relative demands it makes sense that troops can afford to be cheaper than equivalent troops or characters given volume of sales and opportunity costs in shelf space. GW rarely refers to FineCast these days, is usually "GW resin" now (distinct from "Forge World resin), I think. I've heard people say that that they use a different resin now than what they used when FineCast got its reputation, but I was away from the hobby when FineCast came in, so I never experienced its early days. I've a couple of late era GW Resin kits, Grombrindal in power armour and Severina Raine, and both look perfectly good. More casting gates than on typical 3rd party resin models but other than that crisp and clean looking. I've only got a handful of models from the earlier era of FineCast moulds, a Chaos warrior and some Eldar warlocks. They need a bit more clean up, the warrior had one bubble but that's it for real problems except for the poorly placed multitude of casting gates, so the material, process and/or quality control did improve a lot - eventually.

One of the things I do with my sand is to mix in weathering powders, which colours the sand quite nicely. You have to seal it once you've glued it to the base and it's dried, using a slightly watered down PVA or wash.

Oh wow, at 58:35 mark - those Cities of Death scenery kits. I have never stabbed myself so much on any plastic kit (and I collect Dark Eldar!) as those bloody things! The spikes on those tops were mental and they kept their sharpness even if you tried to dull them down. Love seeing Tom return! I vividly remember the Finecast change - I was working at a games store at the time and we had those White Dwarfs laying around, including the one that introduced it. Even then I could tell those poor designers were held at a gunpoint and told to just smile as they print absolute nonsense in their name. My first ever Finecast models were a box of Howling Banshees I got for myself on a birthday - one of them was lacking a whole half of her bum that I needed to sculpt on, to say nothing about all the bubbles!

When my brother and I were small boys; we had these ghostbusters motorised ghosts that would have a hard plastic saw string pushed through a slot, and the saw string was pulled out fast so the toy would speed off and sparks would fly out of the mouth. However, my brother and I would just use the saw string as weapons because they were *solid* and the teeth were sharp. It used to leave some right welts and cuts. They were quickly taken away from us. Or we’d get those guns that shot sparks out and put them near each others faces without the other knowing and shoot. The early nineties was a brilliant time to be a child. No concept of the Geneva convention existed.

Finecast nearly cost me my entry into warhammer, i started when finecast became a thing and they were really pushing it. I went into a GW and decided i want to start an ultramarines army, my options were assault at black reach or cato sicarius and a battleforce. I chose the battleforce and cato because i didnt really want the orkz. Flash forwards to me at home and my mum told me to do the single cato sicarius model first because he was just a single little dude - if i didnt like the hobby i could alway return the battleforce. So here young me, first building experience, finecast. I was miserable nothing stuck together, it was difficult to work with, the mold was weird and i nearly quit all together. Thankfully i went against my mums orders and built some space marine scouts instead and found plastic was such a better experience so i kept going with the hobby. It also cost me my excitement for an eldar army early on. I was a big fan of the eldar in dawn of war and LOVED warp spiders and howling banshees, but when i got their models the banshees hair was dreadfully molded in the cast and their swords were bent while the warp spiders backpacks had so many little resin corners that i got sick of them and quit.

My first finecast model, Mangler Squigs. I bought it, opened it in the store, it was unusable. Bubbles, holes, deformed, warped pieces. Manager gave me another box, opened it, it was unusable. Peter Dennis, who you mention in the 40th minute, is also doing an increasingly large variety of paper soldiers. Impressively good ones, too. I rarely use anything else these days - cheap, relaxing to build, and fantastic art. I loved the three Heraldry books, and still have them. I was hoping for more, including one for Imperial Guard, but it never happened - though I've noticed the same basic concept was used in the 5th edition "black book" to show off different regiments, aspect warriors, etc.

Curious to see what the new resin models for The Old World will be like. I've been doin 3D printing for myself for the last 2 years and I've found that besides being smelly, my resin prints have been great. They've made such leaps with 3D printing and resin over the last several years its amazing. Brings your old episode on if GW should start 3D printing into a new light.

I have ABSOLUTELY no insight, or evidence for this, but for some reason I can envision in my mind's eye, a section in the GW factory where they have two or three staff manning 50 resin printers. It seems like the only way they could do resin minis these days without Failcast again.

@@bryanv1681 That would take up a much larger footprint and take longer to produce that resin casting. They already 3d print the prototype to make masters with. Finecast won't come into it with proper resin/FW stuff. Finecast had a very specific niche. Modern proper resin casting is actually excellent, see Horus ascended or new Fulgrim as an example and not even slightly close to finecast.

@@rankcolour8780 Yeah. But that's ForgeWorld, and I spent something like four years working in the factory doing it. It's an entirely different process to Finecast. You are right, though. They are more likely to just do what they are familiar with and double/triple the capacity of their traditional resin work.
