Warmaster is the best ruleset that GW ever produced, great mini's too! Why do you think it didn't take off??
@DanielEbeck
@DanielEbeck 11 ай бұрын
One of the things that made me want to work for GW was around 1994, I had a Blood Angels army for 2nd Ed. I'd seen a banner that I really liked, but it wasn't in any of the books I had and I had no clue where to get it. I rang up Mail Order to ask them what it was from. The guy on the phone patiently listened to my description of it, took my address and said he would be in touch. A few days later I got a few photocopied sheets in the post. He'd been up to the Studio Archive, found it, copied it and mailed it to me. No money, just a request from a guy for something cool, and they took the time to go find it. I eventually loved working in the Studio for a dodgy Fat Bloke.

White Dwarf needs to be championed at all costs. It's such an undervalued resource for this hobby. For so many of my formative years when I didn't have access to a local gaming group or really an FLGstore, before the days of the internet, White Dwarf was my sole connective tissue to keep me connected to the hobby. And some 30+ years on, it did it's job quite well and continues to do so! Great conversation, thanks for hosting and sharing!

I was a key timer on the MO phones and was pressganged by Robin into helping out set up the WW museum. 2005 or so. Lots of heavy lifting of cabinets up staircases, but what a lovely bloke Robin was. Treated us to lunch all week and let me have an hour with the 6th ed Wood Elf book a couple of months before release. I also suggested we put the John Blanche undead diorama in there and Robin let me go fetch it from the Studio… what an honour and also bloody scary holding history! Top bloke Robin. I have the Talking Miniatures book (got the signed one!) and it’s a fantastic read!

God those cabinets were heavy, but we got it done and I always loved the peace and respect that the original Citadel Miniatures Hall, gave to those wonderful models. @imagifyer
@imagifyer 11 ай бұрын
I had the pleasure of meeting Robin and John earlier this year just before the Vols 1 & 2 were released. We did ask about Bryan's absence from the current edition and Robin informed us that it was mainly due to a combination of personal and health issues (the exact nature of which he wouldn't disclose out of courtesy to Bryan, and rightly so) but that they're hopeful for any future work. He also mentioned that John Blanche was another one they wanted to include but couldn't at the time, as John's retirement from GW was only announced after the books had already been sent for printing

Robin’s stint at White Dwarf is basically my early intro to GW - it was seeing Hero Quest and Space Crusade logos on the cover of issue 145 that caught my eye in the newsagent and dropped me down the rabbit hole (may well have been Robin’s decision to have them there….). Around that time was such a great period for the magazine, you really felt the personality of all of the staff coming through in a way which I guess just isn’t possible with GW being a much bigger, more corporate entity these days. Great chat with both of these guys, a copy of the book has just ended up on my Christmas list.

Dave Taylor used to edit white dwarf for Australia same time as Robin was editing UK
@robindews4108
@robindews4108 11 ай бұрын
Hiya Sooty, yes that’s right. We used to call it ‘localisation’ where Dave in Oz, or the team in the US - Jerm and Drew, would take out all of the UK specific pages, like the retail ads and so on, and replace them with their Australian or US equivalents. We used to have a lot of fun… I can remember being told that we had to stop using the phrase, “…the Dwarfs beat off the Dragon!” in our battle reports, because it carried a whole different meaning in the US 😂 So what did we do… make sure that we included it in as many reports as we could! We were just very naughty boys! Best regards - Robin

"Some day when the order came in on a Monday, they posted it on a Saturday, they would get it on a Tuesday. Nowadays people wouldn't find that amazing." Nowadays here I am in Germany, placing an order at my local Warhammer Store and I consider myself extremely lucky if it arrives the following week, no matter which day of the week I placed the order :( I realize that a lot of this is out of GW's hands. International shipping, customs and so on. But when I preorder something from a new release from an independent retailer and get it the day BEFORE it is supposed to be released while I preorder a model from the same new release at a Warhammer store and I won't get it until 6 days AFTER it got released something just isn't going right. Anyway, great show. Was great fun to hear all those stories.

It's so nice to see these two. When I was about 13 my brother and I painted an Epic chaos army for John Stallard. I did the Khorne half and my brother the Tzeentch. He was a lovely guy. I'd be curious whether he still has that army.

@@gpm24cam Your memory is bad. The Empire horsemen were for Dave Cross. For John we did an Epic chaos army. You painted a Tzeentch titan that was mostly Amethyst Purple with yellow trim, and you weren't happy with it because the yellow wasn't covering well. I did a Khorne titan and also some juggernauts. I freehanded the Khorne symbols on the juggernaut banners, but they didn't look great so John redid them with transfers :)
@gpm24cam

No, I remember doing an Epic Eldar titan in Amethyst Purple, but no idea who for. I did Dave a rubbish Empire Pegasus at some point as well as Kislev horsemen. But we did Bretonians for John Stallard and got paid £60 for it. I remember Dave saying he’d ripped us off and John getting a bit firm and telling us to hurry up and finish them cos we’d put them off for months. I did yellow and purple halberdiers. You did pale grey and purple double-handed swordsman with wibbly swords and floppy hats.

I’ve been around the hobby since around ‘93. GW miniatures are undoubtably improved. The hobby has really grown and much has improved since then but my favorite memories are when I first got into the hobby. I had a high elf army. All the mono pose models have their own charm. I actually started with necromunda and be and a friend has so much fun playing that game.

That was awesome. In 2019 I was returning to Alberta from Italy by way of England and Iceland (I'm allergic to mint so I try to break my air travel into short hops) and whilst in the UK was supposed to meet up with a friend I'd met in America and who lived in Nottingham. Alas, she got confused on the timing and stood me up for her best friend's wedding (how selfish, right? :P ) so I ended up just wandering around Nottingham. Never made it to GW, but I'd been eyeballing the then-new Doctor Who minis so I made a point of dropping by Warlord (with an empty carry-on suitcase to cram all my lot into.) And then I spent about two hours sitting around in the train station because changing the time on my return ticket would've cost more than the original fare! Anyway, I really like Warlord's stuff so it was fun to hear from the folks who make it.

My first white dwarf was 166 and I recently tracked down and bought an old copy of it because it has always been my favorite battle report. Robin's style of battle reports are totally what made white dwarf for me. The detailed maps, showing moves and casualties, and most importantly the players thoughts on building the army and tactics at the beginning, and how it went and what they would change at the end. It was a magic formula that somehow got lost over time, unfortunately to the detriment of the magazine.

I used to work for GW Italy years ago as sales assistant, store manager and various other roles during games day ( translator for William King and Mark Bedford, were my favourite roles, but also the Dreadfleet demo table). After i quit, they tried to boost sales by hiring store managers from other "worlds" but it didn't work. The best one was a guy who didn't have a clue of what the miniatures were, and displayed a full privateers press legion of everblight army as tyranids for a whole month in the store! 😂

Phoned up Mail Order and they apologised profusely, said they'd send me another box set. Excellent. Didn't turn up. I phoned again about a week later "er... we don't have any available, it's going to be another couple of weeks" A couple of weeks later they sent me... just the books. Note in the package "good news, we managed to source replacement books for you" THAT'S NOT GOOD NEWS! Another box set would have been good news! I still wonder if they went on Ebay for the books...

No offense, but you sound like a selfish git here. Did you have to return the French Boxed set at all? Or books? From the sounds of it no. Many companies would have insisted on that. Additionally, did it occur to you that maybe a member of the staff at the warehouse/Mail Order/a friend of theirs had an extra copy and they kindly donated the books to the cause so you could play the game sooner rather than later?

He pronounced garand correctly. To be honest, the BREN was a significantly better automatic rilfe/light machine gun than the BAR. To be fair to John Moses Browning, he invited the first successful automatic rifle. The BREN was an overall more well-rounded platform. It's great to get a some seasoned war gaming veterans on the show. Even if I don't know who your guests are, it's always an enjoyable show.

Happy Birthday Mike and I really hope that you love the book. For John and I, it was a five-year labour of love to research and write ‘Talking Miniatures’. It was he book that WE wanted to read about this time period. Now that it is out there, I just love the fact that other fans and hobbyists are enjoying it too!

I bought the Eldar army from the battle report in issue 171, was against orks I think? In the days when the army from the report could be mail ordered think it was £50 and was a xmas present, I remember ringing up as a squeaky voiced 12 year old ordering it, then the mail order assistant confirming the cars details with an ‘adult’ 🤣.

Have to say it’s so wonderful to see a video that praises GW and former employees admiring what they are doing today. See far too many videos criticising them of late.

Not a gun nut, but my guess as to why the BAR is so expensive is because Americans love their collectible world war II firearms and they absolutely adore working firearms. Working Bar is much more valuable as a collector's item than a non-functional bren is as army surplus. Cause one is "USA USA USA" and the other is not associated with jingoistic fervor. Just a guess

Ah, Squad Leader - when I got into wargaming that was just fading out as Advanced Squad Leader rolled out (and dominated the N. Am market at the time). Anyone who complains about the 'crunchiness' of the 40K rules should just read the terrain chapter of the ASL rules . . .
