How to start an IV is one of the biggest questions I get as a Paramedic Coach. In today's video, I will take you from "rookie" to expert in one video on IV Access, you'll be more than prepared to help out a partner in need or prep to Paramedic School. Say hi when you come on, and ask any questions in the comments section!

Hey, hey! Can you go from the drip set to the catheter if all the meds you need are put into the bag and do not need to be added to the line? I am doing at home IV therapy - so not EMT - therefore I already know the meds needed.
@TheParamedicCoach Жыл бұрын
Technically, you can do it. But if you have a lock available I would always recommend that, but yes it is possible to connect the two, just not the most recommended method.

My nursing instructor Ms Candler always told us the “Gauge Cheer” , blue 22, green 18, pink 20, yellow “rubber duckie” which means it’s usually used on children. We had a few paramedics in our classes and they’d always crack up. 😂

So the smaller the number the bigger the needle?
@TheParamedicCoach3 жыл бұрын
The smaller the IV number the larger the catheter that's correct. For example, a #16 IV is larger than a #22 iv

To explain a bit of background information he didn't cover at around 2:05 - we can also measure the bore by what is called "French". 1 French is the next larger size from 0-Gauge. As French numbers increase, the size of a bore increases such as that 23G is smaller than 0G which is smaller than 10 Fr. which is smaller than 14 Fr. etc. As a frame of reference 14 Fr. is the typical size of a foley catheter used in the adult population (though sizes as large as 18 Fr. may be used under unique surgical circumstances where surgical drainage or blood drainage are implicated.) also at around 3:35 this is true that we have flexible IV catheters post 1980s or so, but in the 1960s and 1970s, the catheter material that was left in situ was, in fact, fragile and could break. This required immobilization of the IV site to prevent any bending or torque pressure at all from being applied to the catheter in situ, as historically, breaking an IV catheter was a somewhat common surgical nightmare.

That is just going to confuse the new guys. His explanation is so much easier.
