Check (blood glucose) and vitals… Then do a FAST exam, find out when the last time the person was normal. If the FAST is positive then a Stroke alert will be initiated at the receiving hospital. Immediate ER eval and CT scan.

BGL! We get asked when calling stroke alert if we did a BGL, before they ask the vitals. The other thing I would add that is while one is doing the vitals, the other should look around (not take an hour, but a quick look) for any meds. If it's an 84 yo living at home, I would bet the meds are easily accessible. I'd be looking for diabetic medications, any kind of behavioral health meds or ones like gabapentin (because stopping that one cold turkey can DEFINITELY cause stroke-like symptoms.)

Question, in NJ you're not allowed to check glucose at an EMT level. How would I assess the patient in this case? Ask if they're diabetic or if they've eaten recently?

Only one way, gotta taste the blood for sugar.

@@defensivefit-selfdefense you’d have to follow your local protocols in Some regions here in Illinois you cannot check blood glucose either. It’s crazy but it is what it is lol.

Emts in NJ can’t take a blood glucose. NJ uses the NREMT exam and this is why it can be challenging with these questions.

I failed the nremt 3 times going on my 4th try, I’m interested in purchasing but what’s holding me back is that I don’t want to get confused with aemt and paramedic content. I’m only trying to get my emt license. Some of these other KZbinrs teach advanced things and I get lost

Don’t go over the aemt or paramedic information until you need it. It’s access to information for a lifetime.

In New Jersey we are not permitted to check BGL, so would we then perform BEFAST and skip that step?
