Jessi & Alessio

Күн бұрын

24 Hours in Venice with so much to see and do. Where to start? Since Alessio's hometown is only about an hour north of Venice, he claims this enchanting Italian city as home. We've been lucky enough to visit several times, but this time, we wanted to explore more of the hidden gems, local restaurants and unexpected corners that are more difficult to find. Some of the locations you'll see: Libreria Acqua Alta, Calle Varisco, Scala Contarini del Bovolo, Palazzo Tetta, a hidden/private canal dock, and the best place to eat the famous Venetian cicchetti. Hope you enjoy this cozy travel vlog!
Thank you for all of your love and support! Don't forget to subscribe and turn on the bell so you never miss a new video! You can also follow us on our other socials below! Ciao for now! -Jessi and Alessio

Thanks for this video. I met my husband in 2002 on a plane to Italy. Overnight flight which we stayed up all night talking from across the aisle. We stayed together the entire ten days of my trip and for all these years after. It was great to watch this together and see where our love was planted

Venice in the very early morning in mid-April with a light misty rain and a fisherman under a lit street lamp....a memory I will never forget. Piazza San Marco at night with the orchestra playing and the moon and the history and the beauty everywhere...sigh....soon...October....

The island you saw at 9:06 is San Giorgio Maggiore! Its church was built between 1566 and 1610. The canals and the gondolas look so romantic! Gondoliers have to go through rigorous training to get a license, which there are only around 400 available! The gondola's presumed predecessor was the scaula, a slim Roman boat with a flat bottom. Though it had a much broader, more symmetrical build than today’s gondola, it had the advantage of masterfully navigating through the vast meandering canal network. As Venice became an important city of world trade in the 16th century and its population subsequently exploded, the scaula became less suited to traveling through Venice’s crowded canals and lagoons, and little by little, the boat’s design began to evolve. The shape of the boat became dramatically longer and narrower, with its extremities partially jutting out of the water. By the 1800s, the gondola had been stretched to its current condition, the typical Venetian gondola now stretches about 36 feet long! Until the early 20th century, a gondola was often fitted with a “felze”, a small cabin to protect the passengers from the weather or from onlookers, and whose windows could be closed with louvered shutters, the original “Venetian blinds”. After the elimination of the traditional felze, in response to tourists’ complaints that it blocked the view, there survived for some decades a kind of vestigial summer awning, known as the “tendalin”.

The Venetian gondole are so cool! Like you said, the term gondola has been around since the 11th century. It is estimated that there were eight to ten thousand gondole during the 17th and 18th century! Handmade of 280 pieces of eight kinds of wood (elm, cherry, walnut, lime, mahogany, fir, oak, and larch), a gondola takes about two months to build. They're black because of a law a doge enacted to eliminate competition between nobles for the fanciest rig. The iron prow-head of the gondola has neat symbolism! The S-shape resumes the twists of the Grand Canal, the six forward facing teeth correspond to the six districts of Venice, the tooth facing inwards represents Giudecca, the arch above the last tooth represents the Rialto Bridge, and the curved top end symbolizes the Doge’s hat. It does make a lot of sense why the Venetian streets like the one you showed at 3:05 are so narrow. I mean when you're trying to fit so many people on a group of small islands, you work with what you've got! The canals were the main traffic routes, so main entrances in old buildings were always on the canal side. Thus, they didn’t worry much about space between the buildings on land!

Thank you for your "troppo gentile" depiction of Venezia!! It actually brought tears to my eyes, especially the full moon. On clear nights in December 1980 and April 1995, I saw the snow glistening in the moonlight on "Le Dolomiti," from a "fondamenta" on the edge of the city in "Sestieri Cannaregio." It has been my good fortune to visit Venezia five times. The first was in 1972 and the last was 1995. Exiting "Stazione d Venezia Santa Lucia" for the first time is burned into my memory. I stood at the top of the steps enchanted by the sights and sounds of "La Serenissima” spread out before me on the Grand Canal. You brought back memories of my younger days and of people who are no longer with me!! Grazie mille!! Chuck in Northern New England

Have you thought about doing a "Everything to see in (insert city here)" segment? I would watch that. Also, Alessio could find the best mom and pop food place in each city he goes to. He does the best food reviews. 🤗

Whilst Venice is a nice place here are some tips that will serve you well. Don't stay on the island. Find accommodation as close to the island as you can. Walk across the bridge with no luggage for as long as you stay there, you will see more that way. Accommodation on the island does not have lifts and the stairs and bridges are plenty if you are carrying luggage. Dragging luggage through the streets will drive you crazy. What looks like some ones entrance to their house is actually a street. And the most important thing to remember is, the restaurants have 2 menus, 1 for the locals and 1 for the tourists. When you order something keep the menu and check the bill with what you ordered.
