Audrey, I commend you for pushing so hard to get answers. The medical gaslighting that goes on in our healthcare system, especially toward women, is abhorrent. It feels like every appointment where we get written off is taking us 10 steps back. It's not only frustrating, but it's dangerous. Something tells me you're going to get through this and put it in your past soon. I wish you well in your journey.

So true! After months of female issues with lower abdominal pain and lower back pain, I asked my gynecologist to do a CT Scan because I was afraid that I had a tumor. She literally laughed out loud and told me to stop being paranoid. She finally gave in and ordered the scan which showed multiple fibroid tumors on my uterus with the sizes ranging from golf ball to grapefruit size. Even though I was finished having children she refused to do a hysterectomy because I was only 36 yrs old. I ended up going to another physician who performed surgery right away. (The grapefruit size tumor on the backside of my uterus was literally compressing my colon again my back.) No longer being in pain was wonderful, but I shouldn't have had to endure such horrible pain for almost a year!

My brother was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at 17 during a school physical. He had no symptoms but the doctor felt a small nodule on his thyroid. He had his thyroid removed, and then was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. He had more surgery to remove parathyroids followed by radioactive iodine treatment. This was 46 years ago. He just retired and is doing well.

Audrey, you are such a smart, lovely and articulate young lady! And, good for you for pushing for a PET scan when your gut told you something was wrong. You stood up to the doctor and the insurance company! That may well have saved your life. Hopefully, your video will inspire others to push for second opinions, more scans, tests or, if necessary, a different doctor who won't dismiss your concerns.

I am a 66 yr old female and I am 10 years out from diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer with spread to lymph nodes. I had total thyroidectomy with lymph nodes removed then again 6 months later. Radiated iodine treatments. I had alcohol ablation of more positive lymph nodes. Nothing new for 5 years. Very thankful. You have to advocate for yourself. I found the ablation on a Mayo Clinic site and the radiologist did it for me. Best wishes to you.

I've had some great experience with two doctors who saved my life by finding cancer when I had no clue they were there. One was a radiologist who saw concerning things on a mammogram, took a needle biopsy, and the biopsy was negative, but she said she bet she just missed the place and had me come back for another biopsy that showed infiltrating ductile carcinoma. Another was a dermatologist I saw yearly since I'd had a malignant melanoma removed in 1982, who in 2017 decided to do a biopsy on a shiney pink mark that had shown up on my arm in the past 6 months, just in case. It came back from the lab as an unpigmented melanoma (NOT an ugly brown irregular spot), which totally surprised her. For each of these times, my cancers were caught early enough I didn't need chemotherapy.

Hi Audrey! I’m going through something similar right now. I’ve been having a variety of unusual symptoms for the past 2 months. I am retired from working in a medical practice and have been working as a healthcare advocate for others for the last 4 years. Now I’m having to advocate for myself. I’ve already had some dismissive comments about my symptoms, but am happy to say I’m scheduled for an MRI next week to see if we can figure out what’s going on. I, also, have that ‘gut feeling’ something isn’t right and I already struggle with several autoimmune disorders, so I know my body pretty well. Am glad you found a good group of medical professionals to help you and I’ll definitely be following up any results with a second opinion. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Survivor of papillary for 20 years post one 18 hour right and left radical necks then 4 more surgeries. It’s extremely common for thyroid cancer to spread and does not change the diagnosed prognosis usually. I had 52 positive nodes and two doses of RAI. Hashimoto’s disease as well. It’s a life time journey. My thyroid levels after developing MCAS disease have been so erratic with two hospitalizations from hyperthyroid. That’s a standard response for thyroid cancer so don’t take it personally. It is usually a very curable cancer and I do feel lucky since I lost my Dad and now sister to pancreatic cancer. So for me it is a good kind if your going to get it. However the years it took to get diagnosed made me end up with radical surgery and loss of many muscles. Know the symptoms of hyperthyroid so you can catch it early and get your levels checked.

I lost my brother and cousin to pancreatic cancer. I have been diagnosed with pre- thyroid cancer. I had two Parathyroid adenoma removed , one normal parathyroid and the surgeon couldn’t find the 4th parathyroid. My PTH numbers were normal for several weeks and went back to off the charts after one month or so. I had all of the crummy parathyroid symptoms, thyroid symptoms and went back and forth to the doctors. I did feel blown off by the surgeon. I followed up with the endocrinologist, head and neck surgeon, internist and rheumatologist. The Rheumatologist was the doctor who found my parathyroid problems. I had been going to doctors for over 10 plus years trying to find out what was wrong with me. I actually thought that the rheumatologist was wasting time with all of the tests she wanted me to do. I WAS WRONG! The RHEUMATOLOGIST WAS 1000% CORRECT with all of the tests that she ordered. I went through with all of her suggestions, I was just shocked she was right about her hunches of what she thought was wrong and why all the other doctors missed the obvious symptoms and suffering that I was going through and experiencing daily. The Rheumatologist never once treated me like a drama queen which was so kind. ( it’s crazy to have to type something like that onto this comment section). I begged for another set of nuclear studies and they found another PARATHYROID ADENOMA! I knew it was there because of symptoms and swallowing problems, nausea, chronic fatigue, insomnia, etc. I am afraid of what the pathology will show on the thyroid though. The test mentioned some growth on the thyroid that hadn’t existed before. If anyone can spare a prayer I would greatly appreciate it. Praying for all on this site!!!

I have been dealing with a Hypoechoic thyroid nodule that is 7mm x 4mm x 4mm. Saw an and ENT surgeon and he wanted a FNA done with a genetic test. That was in September. Never heard from anyone about an appt, so I called in October and found out that the Interventional Radiologist cancelled the doctors orders. Now hypoechoic nodules are the type of nodules that can be or turn into cancer. Im also an older woman. I am now going somewhere else and got a referral Found out that the original radiologist cancelled the orders because it was no 10mm which is a centimeter. Never told me, called me or anything. So now still waiting for a appt with the new ENT. This has been going on since September 9th.

I really appreciate this channel for highlighting inspiring cancer survivor stories and the journeys of patients with such compassion. The courage and resilience shown are truly moving. However, I feel a bit concerned about a recurring theme that seems to portray doctors as dismissive or incompetent. While it’s deeply upsetting when a cancer diagnosis is missed, it’s worth remembering that most vague or non-specific symptoms resolve on their own without leading to serious conditions. If every unusual symptom led to extensive imaging or specialized testing like PET scans, MRIs or CT scans, it would quickly exhaust healthcare resources. Doctors have to balance patient care with the practicalities of managing limited resources, and this often involves prioritizing the likelihood of serious conditions. Cancer, thankfully, is relatively rare, while more benign conditions are very common. Implying that doctors are indifferent or self-centered doesn’t fully reflect the complexity and thoughtfulness that goes into medical decision-making.

Thank you. I’m no medical professional, and I was misdiagnosed and dismissed (“It’s nothing. Come back in a year”) when I showed my palpable breast lump to my then radiologist. But my life was saved by another, far better doctor: my obgyn, who called me when she got the radiologist’s report. My obgyn said I should see another radiologist, which I did. It was breast cancer. I did treatments and so far am okay, twenty-five years later. Point is: There are lousy doctors and there are excellent doctors. I believe the good ones outnumber the bad.

The American healthcare system is barbaric. Having to fight for a PET scan your doctor wants you to have? Then having to wait for them to 'decide' whether you can have it or not? Having to go to different hospitals and different doctors, and having to do all the legwork yourself? Needing to have money to get 'better quality' healthcare? It's like the dark ages 😢 I feel so very very sorry for all Americans having to navigate that nightmare, while battling cancer. Every time I hear these stories, I'm reminded of how lucky we are to have universal healthcare. It's the same standard (and it's a very high standard, here) for everyone - rich or poor. We all get treated at our local hospital, by whichever specialist we need. Those specialists treat everyone equally, because they're not paid by the patient. We get testing/scans etc as soon as our doctor wants us to have them - in the same facility. We don't have to do any legwork. Our hospital organises everything for us. I would wish that for you, and for everyone going through this already challenging experience.

This particular story was more frustrating bcz she knew that she had hashimoto disease, + her mom had thyroid cancer and she acted surprised when diagnosed. You would assume that would be the very first thing to do get an MRI and CT scan right off the bat

Doctors Today Only Care About The Number of Copays They Get and the Number of People They Herd Through Their Offices!!! They Do Not LISTEN!!! Physician's Assistants THINK They Are Doctors (They Dress Up like a Doctor), But Nurses Have Better Educations and Hands On Experience Directly With Patients!!! I'm Still Recovering From Major Medical Mistakes in 2022 that Resulted in Me Dying (4) Times in (2) Hours, a Coma and (11) Abdominal Surgeries (7 Surgeries Just in An Attempt To Repair The Damage Done!!! Now Have a DNR And Though Chronically Ill I Refuse To Go To the Hospital Now!!! The Damage That Hospital Caused the Trauma May Out Live Me!!! Prayers of Strength and Healing!!! ❤️🙏🏻💪❤️🙏🏻💪❤️🙏🏻💪

I wonder how she was able to push for a PetScan. I had Breast Cancer plus my sister died from Ovarian Cancer and neither one of us were ever given a PetScan. I’ve been dealing with major health issues recently that no one can diagnosed. I’ve even been sent to bigger research hospitals that are 4 hrs away and no Petscan. I commend her for fighting for it. She’s so young and deserves a long healthy life. Good for her

The smartest thing you did in the very beginning was getting a second opinion.. You don’t need a. “ I don’t care.” Doctor… good luck to you and your future. I hope everything works out for you…🤗

Most cancers are not genetic but some are. There are close to 20 inherited genetic mutations that raise your risk for cancer.

I’m wondering if she had a 4 part Epstein-Barr panel. Reactivated EBV can cause a lot of her non thyroid symptoms. Traditional MDs don’t run EBV panels as often as integrative physicians.

I’m so happy you were able to find answers and are doing better. It sounds like you might have Epstein Barr virus with all you fevers, rashes, fatigue, etc. have your doctor test you for it. I was just diagnosed after years of doctors missing it. It’s also tied to hashimotos and other autoimmune diseases. I have Graves’ disease and thyroid nodules which I just learned are all connected. I recommend you get tested for Epstein bar virus
