That was Grudens 4th yr, he got "fired", then after that Ruggs killed someone, then the Arnette thing and they did end up making the playoffs that year. Lost to the bengals in the wild card (Carr with a chance to win it threw a pick to Pratt in the endzone)

AP was given the impossible task of competing with an organization around him well-practiced in failure. Carolina, both New Yorks, Jacksonville, and Cleveland all have the same issue. Coaches and players are the scapegoats. Imagine if relegation was a thing. These owners would either be gone, broke, or forced to leave all sporting aspects alone. But fans are instead forced to endure the country club aesthetic that is NFL ownership.

Recognize that you will have to do 3-10 years as an assistant coach once you break into that realm, then its working to get either an Offensive or Defensive Coordinator position for another 2-5 years or more. It’s not just who to hire as coach. The organization must have a great structure from top to bottom. Look at the Redskins…. I mean Commanders turn around. New owner ( thank gawd ) brings in knowledgeable football executives. They then bring in an accomplished personal guy to be a G.M. Next they hire a highly respected/experienced Head coach. Collectively shape the personal and coaching staff. Reshape the roster to address not just systems but culture, and Draft with intelligence.

As a Raiders fan I knew Pierce was out from how he handled the Devonte situation, asked about him by name and only referring to him by number like a child and clearly showing his emoting is not how a headcoach acts. The only thing that really annoys me is we could have had Harbaugh instead of the Chargers by all accounts given his history with the team. IDK if I want Gruden back, the end of his run was so bad, the emails were a blessing.

Raiders are such a mess. I’ve been a Raiders fan my whole life and this may be as bad as I’ve ever seen them. No one will want to come here. We’re not getting Johnson or Vrabel We don’t have the draft capacity to get a QB. They’re completely screwed. AP wasn’t a good coach. He started the wrong QB all season and he consistently displayed poor clock management. That said, I’d rather give him one more year to try and improve if we’re not in the running for a top guy (we’re not getting a top coach).

Pierce was an emotional leader but little else from what I saw. Much better as a DC than a HC. Some players will want out now too, sadly. Maxx may well be next. How long will they remain at the bottom of the division? Both Denver and SD took nice steps forward in 2024.

Coaches like DeMeco and Vrabel clearly earned opportunities through assistant work after amazing playing careers….Pierce didn’t and Mayo never stepped outside of NE. Both hires were dumb and no other team would’ve considered it. Internal promotions don’t work at HC.

The Cheerleader Pierce should have never been hired. He couldn't attract a decent OC. He was terrible at clock management. There isn't a team in the NFL that would hire him. Pierce was worse than McDaniels. 9-17 vs 9-16... Pierce claim to fame was yelling Raiders in a PC. Hopefully Mark Davis never lets the players intimidate him into hiring a HC...
