It’s very grounding to go through the cycle of seeing the marketing, feeling the pang of wanting, having the discipline not to pull the trigger, and then ultimately forgetting about it, until you see it a second time around, and realizing “Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Huh. Oh well.” Helpful to keep in mind the mantra, “you’ve made it X years so far in your life without this thing, do you actually truly need it now?” No… It’s almost like throwing cold water onto affiliate marking programs is a bit taboo. Thanks for the video! You’re right.

I think, in the end, there isn't as much of a tension between the Wall of Bags and anticonsumerism as you might think. One thing I really love about these kinds of niche product hobbies-- whether it's bags, retro handhelds, pocket knives, colognes, and so on and so forth-- is that the hobby is built around actively learning a lot about something, its practical uses, and what your own tastes would be, rather than following trends and buying whatever becomes popular. I know for a fact that my bags are a thousand times more useful, and significantly better constructed, than so many of the trendy and/or designer bags that are going to sell like hotcakes on Black Friday. I know that when evergoods puts out a new bag, I'm probably going to be interested in the design and uninterested in the aesthetic, unless and until they do a collaboration version. I'm more thoughtful and intentional about what i own thanks to hobbyists and thanks to reviewers such as yourself. (Which isn't to say that there aren't problems with the hobby; I wish more people turned down affiliate deals, or, at the very least, took the path of RetroGameCorps and always offered non-affiliate links alongside affiliate links.) But when you say you "buy crap all the time," what you mean is that you buy things to inform yourself and others about them. I don't think there's any contradiction here; your Wall *looks* consumerist, but thanks to your work, people end up consuming less and spending their money more thoughtfully.

my friend who uses an old sportswatch I recommended him to wait until after Christmas and buy second hand. Lot of people receive a gift that upgrades their gear during the holidays. And it won't really be the same price until a few months in the future. I need a new vacuum. Since the end of the summer. Waiting till black Friday is more interesting I guess than buying in September.

Crumpler is a great brand that's been around for at least 20 years. I still have one of their messenger bags that I only recently retired as my airline personal item in favor of a backpack.

It was kinda fun when it was a real bargain hunt - or at least fun watching the companies try to outdo each other - but that's gone and that's ok

This is a great video! Awesome job! Some of the companies I like the most post the MSRP and tell you you're getting a killer deal and the out the door cost is the same as the day to day cost.

At some places it's practically Black November at this point. The 11/11 "sales" start at the beginning of the month and then there's barely a break before the early BFCM sales start.

The message in your video is great, but in all transparency I think you should be upfront and mention that you run a used bag marketplace… so it is in your best interest to promote selling used goods vs new. I still agree with your points, I guess it’s more of a nitpick…
@ThePerfectBag11 күн бұрын
Lol. You got me there. I do in fact, sell used bags. But, that's kind of like saying that if I recommend yard sales, I should share upfront that. I also have yard sales. I truly don't view my website as a used bag "marketplace". I just sell my bags there used - so I don't have to give a percentage of my money to eBay. I think if I was running a true used bag marketplace, like nomad nation is and taking a percent of sales then there would be a conflict of interest in my message here. But I'll think about what you shared.

Here I am just receiving my CPL16 that I feel guilty buying. It was very expensive (for me) and I’m having the feeling I should return it and get something less expensive for an EDC bag.
@ThePerfectBag11 күн бұрын
If you're going to use it and love it - don't feel guilty! That's a great bag for sure! This video was about helping people not get pressured into making purchases just because it's Black Friday 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Start a bag company called GubbinBag The bags cost £25 to make and store. Advertise them as Recommended Retail Price of £350 Then offer a 'sale' price of £160 and have a sale 3/4 times a year. People that buy them full price, suckers. People that buy them on sale, still suckers for buying £20 of fabric for £160.. 😂
@ThePerfectBag10 күн бұрын
You do have to wonder about the 'regular price' margins when a company can still afford to sell and ship a bag at 35% off that regular price without going out of business.

I’ve been on such an anti-consumerism kick lately. But really I’m just being smarter with what I have. I have an Aer City Pack Pro, Day Sling Max 3 and a BYC QuickDraw coming hopefully before Christmas. Selling my Wexleys and the only bag I have my eye out for now is a future BYC Northseeker or something. Other than that…. My money might just stay in my wallet. Besides gifts for the wife.

@@ThePerfectBag exactly this. I’m starting to really use my products until they truly wear out. When theirs too many holes, cracks or it’s genuinely too slow for what I use it for.
