One of my favorite things about Home Improvement was the continuity of Tim building his hot rod over several years. That car was the focal point of many episode plots, and an important supporting character in its own right. This episode, for me, was the payoff of all those years of (literal) buildup. And it always stuck with me that Tim did the right thing at the end, without Wilson or anyone else needing to tell him first. Tim was a clown, and a klutz, but this one time we got to see another side of him.

For the record: The car Bob Vila drove was an Aluma Coupe. The turbocharged engine that Al refers to is a 2.0L Mitsubishi Eclipse motor that did produce a genuine 370 bhp. Tim's 1933 Ford Roadster (it was Tim Allen's own car that he still owns) actually uses a version of the 350 Chev, though Allen himself isn't sure which GM manufacturer it originally came from.

Tim could've won but he didn't want to push it because the engine isn't broken in, yet. He was afraid pushing it would've made the engine explode or something. Tim spent 3 years building his hot rod which built sentiment toward it while Bob has his hot rod built by experts. So Tim made the right decision.
