Thanks for a more measured and positive review than the knee-jerk reaction most content creators are having. It feels like female protagonists have become a battleground to the point we can't have a regular female character lead a movie without everyone wanting to course correct where things have been headed. There's a lot of terrible mary-sue female characters created specifically to push an agenda in modern cinema but I didn't feel that from Hera. Stand Alone Complex which was also directed by Kamiyama has a much stronger female lead in The Major/Motoko and she's generally praised so the backlash against Hera is surprising to me and seems to be coming from a lot of people who didn't see the film. She's often vulnerable in the film, she doesn't climb onto the back of an oliphant, singlehandedly kill all its riders and then hack through its skull with an axe. She doesn't go toe-to-toe with a troll unarmed, she often needs to be protected. It just blows my mind how she's being called a Mary-Sue in the same movie where a guy scales an Oliphant, kills all its riders and breaks its head open with an axe, I guarantee if she had done that instead of her brother there'd be numerous complaints but I haven't seen it mentioned once as something that would be incredibly difficult for even a trained fighter.

@mr.s2005Ай бұрын
Its not about that. It's about making an one sentence no name character the star of the movie with bogus reasoning in the movie to say why she wasnt named. That kinda of character isnt interesting and was only chosen out of desperation. If she had been important, tolkien wouldnt have mentioned her as only an afterthought compared to what else happened. That being said, still giving it a shot, see if at least it's a good movie in it's own right,

@@misaelfraga8196so in other words, do YOU think Mulan is a Mary Sue? Respectively speaking.
@misaelfraga8196Ай бұрын
@@FoltestAnimations yes given the historical period, but it is tolerable in the sense that Mulan is at least the protagonist as Canon. For example let's say an anime for Ghengis Khan came out for us to have Mulan figure essentially being the reason Ghengis achieved so much and is only able to be the Khan due to the evil patriachy and all she wanted to be is a slay queen princess that needs no man but of course they need her to save them as she rejects all the values of her time embraces 20th century feminist values while not wanting to marry and have kids. Here Hera basically swapped Frealaf Hildenson story arc.
@ThePhilosophersGamesАй бұрын
The text of this story is more a summary or "historical" record. It has not really a protagonist. And as said: Helm can't be protagonist (spoiler: he dies too early). His two sons can't be protagonist (spoiler: they die too early). Fréaláf can't be the protagonist, because he is not at Hornburg and only comes there after the winter. The only characters left (that are at least mentioned in the books) would be Hild (Helm's sister) and Helm's daughter. They decided to use the daughter. I think because she is also saved by e.g. Olwyn and Fréaláf and because she fails in saving her family and not claiming the crown at the end (she also listened to her father to stay in Edoras, something Éowyn would not do), that this "counters" the Mary Sue characteristic of her a bit. Further Tolkien wrote another character like her in the lore with Haleth. I found Hera not that unusual in this context.

Well anything is better than ROP. While, i think it was a bit dumb to make a one sentence no name character and have heard of the loops they are jumping through to justify why despite her efforts isnt mentioned, but i can understand the logic of showing someone at the hornburg taking over after helm died. Listening to the music and the voice acting, i dont believe this was done half heartedly....like rings of power....so more than willing to go and see it for myself. While I do like anime, especially avatar the last airbender, it's not exactly the most grounded of mediums out there. Regularly the characters pull off superhuman feats and don't get hurt by things that would be greviously damaging to people. This more flimsy nature of anime doesn't really mesh that well with Tolkien. Not for me. Not after the trilogy. And considering it's seemingly good but not great. Not sure this is for me.
@rain.688129 күн бұрын
That is not anime specific. It's action specific and it exists in the west as well, e.g. MCU

@@Wimpiethe3 1. MCU are movies, not comics and they changed a lot of stuff to be more consumer friendly. 2. Just because something is a comic, it won't be necessarily similar. Garfield is also a comic, but far from marvel. 3. Anime is not a genre, it's a medium. So still no. MCU is much much closer to the biggest action characters and movies (like Stallone, Schwarzenegger, James Bond movies etc) than to anime.

I have to say after watching myself it's ok but, none of the characters were flushed out, making me not care to see anyone died. Overall a 6.5 out of 10. (Spoilers: rant from here on out!) Overall, Hera was good enough character at wasn't completely girl boss at beginning. I like how she use her brain to lure one elephant to the water edge to have the watcher take it out and taking out the second elephant with just simple logic with use of fire and the mount siege engine on top of gate house to buy her people time to get out of city. However that as far used of brain ending of a good character traits then begins stupid luck of defeating of stronger foes. Those shows her struggling of hand to hand combat against single opponent but something ridiculous always happens to give her edge to save her life. Like her horse kick Lord whatever is name into a hay pitchfork while stable was on fire. Now I mint buy into this if horse panic and kick him but, showing that the horse done it more on purpose than actually panicking is unbelievable. Before anyone begins on how loyal her horse is, a well trained horse will not kick anyone while behind it. Unless one those weird horses hates anyone behind them. Which could been show of someone almost gotten kick at beginning of the movie. However I doubt a princess would own horse like that. Which would made more believable if the horse was panic because flames of the fire making the horse panic results of the horse kicking the Lord into the pitchfork while Hera held it to defend herself. Then within single combat with Wolfe she was able to go toe to toe with him. I not talking about their duel, where she pull off shield spin to disarming him for that was brilliant. No, I'm talking about everything that fellow after... Now would been more believable if say he was wounded. Having the eagle fly by really f$#& him up or, heck I even take his own general stab him at same time when Wolfe stab his general. Instead we get Hera getting magical abilities of agility and endurance to go toe to toe, held away a dagger from stabbing her, jump leap over a man like she a (mighty-elf from rings of power) and caught a buckler shield toss to her in midair to come down to on top of him to slam over cherry throat but, that doesn't finished him off mainly but, she had to hold him down to choke him out to death. It like script begins with someone writing out a character playing to their own strength then was given to someone couldn't write but use ex-machina bullshit to save her life or, try make Hera look cool for final actions to have her killed Wolfe. O one last thing, how everyone blowing smoke how great she is throughout the film is red flag shows the writing was awful. You would think as Hollywood writer they taken up basic of writing a story 101 or, something. Heck KZbin has writer videos for free to learn. However, thx if read my rant.

I saw the film yesterday. To be honest, this one wasn't disappointing because my expectations were very low to begin with. I genuinely think the critiques of Hera being a girl boss are true. I didn't care for her whatsoever. I'll never understand why they focused the story on her. Her tale is almost exactly like Eowyn's, and Eowyn's story did much more for me emotionally while her story wasn't even the main focus in the original trilogy. Helm Hammerhand and Wulf came across as total dicks. I didn't buy Wulf's cruelty. It felt like his motivations were poorly written. The same goes for Helm. I know he loves his people, but he's one of the most arrogant men I've seen on screen. None of the characters listened to Hera, which felt like a cringe girl boss plot to me. Those flaws crushed any emotional investment in the story I could have. Let's just say I enjoyed the animation style, the music, and the voice acting, but that's it. It's not nearly as bad as ROP, but that isn't saying much. The Rohirrim have an amazing and expansive history. Why not make an animated show about the most important happenings of said history?

Greetings from Germany :) I will not watch the movie in a theater because I find this particular animation style totally off-putting, and I am not overly interested in the story. But you made a nice and very fair review. Just one minor thing: you shouldnˋt try to roll the "Rs". It sounds totally unnatural, and it doesnˋt even make a lot of sense if you are just mentioning a few names. I think itˋs only necessary in actual dialogues of the characters. But rolling the R in "Helm HammeRhand" doesnˋt make any sense whatsoever! "Hammerhand" is an English word after all, and it should be pronounced the English way. Tolkien himself only rolled the Rs when he used his invented languages or names which were used by the people who spoke these languages. As I said, itˋs a minor thing - but itˋs like a pebble in a shoe ;)
@ThePhilosophersGamesАй бұрын
Thank you ^^ Regarding the pronunciation: I had this discussion for now 7+ years (started making lore videos 2017). And I also roll the Rs now for 7+ years, because I once decided to not anglicise the pronunciation of names on my channel. One reason was Tolkien described the pronunciation of e.g. Sndarin and Quenya names in quite a bit of detail and I invested some time into this topic. Another one is, that I can't anglicise English pronunciation for fantasy names, because English pronunciation in context of spelling makes no sense (see: though, through, tough, thorough, bomb, comb, tomb, dear, bear, etc; it only makes sense in context of a word's etymology; as a not native speaker pronunciation would become a guessing game). In contrast to your comment I also get a lot of positive comments for this endeavour, but I know the feedback on this was always a bit mixed. Still I have some videos with a million + views and a large average watch time/viewer, where I roll every R. So I guess it can't be that bad. In the case of Helm you are right though. The epithet "Hammerhand" is Modern English. I should say something like "hammor hand" if I want to pronounce it Old English. I thought it was also "hammer" in Old English, but seems I remembered it wrong. Interestingly I think I anglicised "Hornburg" in this video, which would also work as actual Old English name as well (/ˈhornburɣ/ or /ˈhornburx/ or maybe /ˈxornburɣ/ I guess). Some names Tolkien uses in this context like Súthburg or Glǽmscrafu (for the Glittering Cave) are clearly Old English, while Aglarond is Sindarin. But it's always a complicated topic.

@ThePhilosophersGamesАй бұрын
[Spoiler] She also gets saved by e.g. Fréaláf, when she is kidnapped. Her character also pretty much reflects Éowyn for the most part. Fréaláf also makes good calls, but is ignored as well. Did not find it that feminist, to be honest. Éowyn also wants to fight in war, disguises herself to ride to war and kills the bad guy, who no other man could kill (Witch King). If you look at this, Éowyn is more extreme than Hera in comparison, but than leaves her "warrior princess" days behind marries and has children. (e.g. Hera kind of listens to her father and does not ride to the battle with his men). That is the only part they left out with Hera in direct comparison and I think it fits her character. Further Tolkien did not indicate her having children as well, so she not being married is a plausible assumption.

@ThePhilosophersGames she immediately saves Fréaláf when he initially tried to save her from the Oliphaunt early on the movie I knew where this was going. Frealaf didn't even really save her from captivity since her other maiden Mary Sue character broke in to break her out. The antagonist who is supposed to be this battle hardened warrior prince is emasculated early on as kids, but even at the end she overpowers him by manhandling him pinning him down, or hold back the trust of his sneaky dagger attack with her left hand. Even the migthy Hammerhand had to be saved by her only right before he (Helm) began to cry on his knees as she stands proudly over him while declaring she will save Rohan where he had failed. I could go on but I no longer want to vent over this movie that I know is going to bomb.

She saved Fréaláf, Fréaláf saved her with Olywyn as said. That's just what happens in the film. Helm saves her killing both Orcs and fighting the troll, that also happens. She's just a female protagonist in a land where the term shieldmaiden is a thing. You can interpret that however you want. But than you have to critique Éowyn as well. @@ThePhilosophersGamesI think everyone acts like Tolkien is a god and everything he wrote is a masterpiece in fiction. It’s actually not some of his stuff dosent make sense and contradicts other stuff imo. Nothing is perfect not even the hobbit book

I liked it. It was never going to live up to the original trilogy, and that's probably where a lot of hate is coming from. Not enough Helm Hammerhand, questionable cameos by the watcher in the water and the white wizard, kinda wished for a more rigid animation style like was actually teased, but overall 8/10. Certainly a breath of fresh air after Rings of Power🤮

6.9/10. The voice acting was good and I liked the animation especially the backgrounds and the monsters etc. could’ve had more emotions on the characters and flashed the characters out better but it wasn’t bad I enjoyed it especially the middle part of the movie. Rings of power is a fucking embarrassment

if you would have actually seen the review, you would know I said "it's ok". Not great but watchable. Solid, but nothing more. Some people might not like it. The film is already niche being an anime and not reaching the heights of Peter Jackson's Towers and with a mixed animation quality, it's unlikely to become a great success, which it was obviously not. A bit unfortunate, for the most part, because I would have loved to see a fantastic and successful Tolkien adaption for once. The film is thematically also very tame. That some people get out their "it's woke" pitch forks is not even worth it to be honest. Hera has some Mary Sue elements, but not as bad as I feared. I have seen worse Mary Sue characters in this regard. What is interesting: people complain about the male characters not being very smart, but in the book's story Helm is also not very smart. Actually book Helm acts even more unwise than how he is depicted in the film. Quote from the books: "“You have grown big since you were last here; but it is mostly fat, I guess”; and men laughed at that, for Freca was wide in the belt." (just insults him for no reason, which is not very diplomatic, Freca was still a lord and noble of Rohan. The Film makes Helm's comment less direct, to make Helm look better I guess). Further: ‘When the council was over, Helm stood up and laid his great hand on Freca’s shoulder, saying: “The king does not permit brawls in his house, but men are freer outside”; and he forced Freca to walk before him out from Edoras into the field. To Freca’s men that came up he said: “Be off! We need no hearers. We are going to speak of a private matter alone. Go and talk to my men!” And they looked and saw that the king’s men and his friends far outnumbered them, and they drew back. ‘“Now, Dunlending,” said the king, “you have only Helm to deal with, alone and unarmed. But you have said much already, and it is my turn to speak. Freca, your folly has grown with your belly. You talk of a staff! If Helm dislikes a crooked staff that is thrust on him, he breaks it. So!” With that he smote Freca such a blow with his fist that he fell back stunned, and died soon after. ‘Helm then proclaimed Freca’s son and near kin the king’s enemies; and they fled, for at once Helm sent many men riding to the west marches.’ So what did Fréca wrong here? He gets insulted and responds to Helm insultingly as well and then gets forced outside, just to be punched dead outside. The film makes Freca look a bit worse here and Helm actually better (in the film Freca punches Helm first, which is different in the book). But if the material does not give wiser and smarter men, you can't blame the film that the men look not smart and wise in it. Only Hera and Fréaláf (also a man) look smart, which makes imo sense.

Fan fiction self insert crap basically.

It's actually pretty close to what Tolkien wrote with some additions. 😅 There are like 1-2 strong changes though.

@@ThePhilosophersGameseven Peter Jackson did fan fiction changes lol

That’s just not true. A lot is changed/adapted to fit this new main character. And Peter Jackson changed quite a bit as well, but the core aspects and the authenticity remained. This just feels like something that is adapting a completely different source material while superficially mimicking the Peter Jackson’s trilogy - because obviously it was very successful and that is what these type of lazy creators do, they latch onto much better works and onto much better skilled and talented people to try and get a bit of the success without putting the same amount of work and respect for the source material.

@Limebradley yes PJ also changed a lot of things in LotR. I can understand most changes though, except for 1-2.

@@Daniel__Nobre pretty sure Jackson’s wife had a lot to do with this movie dude. Jackson changed things they I don’t think kept the core aspects but it wasn’t for the lack of respect nor do I think this film was.
