For the gaps in the wing selection, you could use 'add/remove...colour range' and use the eye dropped in the sky near it. Also, I sometimes find 'select object's with the 'square' selection works better than 'select subject'.

Thank you Christian. Everyday I learn something new from you. For the pesky masking near the feathers, you could use add/remove luminance mask

I really appreciate you giving us the RAW file to practice with. Helps me a lot since I unfortunately don't have Lightroom, I use DxO Photolab, and while I know I can't get the exact same results, following along with the original RAW image helps try to translate the actions between the two programs.
@ThePhlogPhotography18 күн бұрын
Thanks for the kind comment, very happy to hear that you can still follow along even with the other raw editor! :-)

I do mostly metal birds (i.e. aircraft) and to minimize the halo in acute angle spots, when masking the subject, I generally subtract the sky or the background from the subject mask: works most of the times, especially against uniform background So much so, I saved that mask as a user preset, speeding up basic editing

Great work, Christian. I’ve found that the Object selection tool does a much better job of selecting birds than the Subject tool. Give it a try and you’ll notice a much better feather selection on the wings. Thanks again for sharing your work.

why make things higher exposure by adding whites vs plain exposure slider? (i am a beginner) youre video's are very helpful and fun!
@ThePhlogPhotography2 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment! If you increase exposure, everything will become brighter, but if you increase highlights or whites, only the brighter parts will get brighter and in turn we can add more contrast this way

Really enjoyed this edit and you gave such a clear explanation of how you did it. There does appear to be quite a bit of noise in the image. Would you use the Lightroom noise reduction for this?

Christian, I am very thankful for your beautiful photo and magnificent presentation! I do have difficulty with the first Adobe Color selection, is it for a warmer color, not considered the background?
@ThePhlogPhotography18 күн бұрын
Thank you very much Nancy! Do you mean the Profile I was using? I changed it from Adobe Color to Adobe Standard since the Adobe Standard profile has a little less contrast. This in turn gives us more control over the contrast. In the end its a very minor change and not that important, I just like setting up a rather flat base image on which I then apply the masking :-)
@brausso20 күн бұрын
Nice video. Just a quick note, the reason you couldn't mask out the small part of the wings was because 1- auto mask was on and had a hard time picking up the correct area. In small areas like that, I always turn it off. 2- your brush size was too big. Go small and turn off auto mask.
@ThePhlogPhotography18 күн бұрын
You are correct, I had auto mask turned on (I deactivated it in the process but might have cut out that part of the video) but the brush might have still been too big for that tiny area :/

Great job indeed, I really enjoy following your videos regularly since many weeks now. I’ve begun shooting birds, so this video has immediately called me. ISO 3200 : you don’t integrate denoise operation during your editing, i wonder whether it is necessary or not ? From my experience i’m used to denoise my photos with Topaz Denoise, i would be glad to know your opinion about this 🙂 Very nice result, especially the contrast between cold tones of the background and accentuated warm tone of the bird. Very helpful thanks a lot

Thank you very much for the kind comment! For better image quality, denosing would be helpful for this image indeed. I think for putting this shot online on instagram and other sites denosing is not that important though :-)

For selecting the gaps in the wing, I tend to use objects selection rather than brush. I find that generally works best.
