The P125 is well known for being a great beginner instrument, as well as being an affordable professional-level instrument. The P515 is well known for being a well-rounded digital piano with an impressive amount of positive qualities, such as better sounds, bigger speakers, a better action, and a higher build quality. Of course this comes at a higher price, so what are the differences between the two?

The P 515 has Binaural sampling for the CFX Grand when you plug in the headphones. These are recordings done from the position of the player head. When you connect an open back headphones, it sounds like you don't wear headphones at all, but the sounds are comming from the piano itself. This is a magical feature

Totally true, the first time tha you use the binaural sound you beliebe tha you are in front a real intrument and you forget switch on the headphones!, is wonderfull and is no only wonder of the amazing of 515, for me the most interesting characteristics is the real inreaction between keys like a real piano when you can apreciate the addition and subtraction of the two waves creating complex an real interaction like a real piano. For me is very real effect that is no so spread on other instruments.

Interesting fact for some people. He never put any accent into that line. It was just an American-esque "back", despite people remembering it as if he did. Same for the *Field of Dreams* .. The voice never says "If you build it, _they_ will come". It's always been "he". Or like, it was always Loony _Tunes_ and never Loony _Toons_ .

I bought a P125B to facilitate a return to piano playing (at my very amateur level) and to refresh my waning skills. For this purpose it suits me very well! I am always gratified to learn that I didn't miss out too much by not springing for the P515. Thorough analyses like yours have helped validate my choice. I almost went for a Roland, and probably would have been OK with it, but definitely have no regrets. Your video has reinforced my satisfaction and for that I am grateful. Buyers remorse can be insidious! For all who are interested in these lower tier Yamaha keyboards I would encourage getting an upgraded sustain pedal, as the one that is packaged with the unit is pretty cheap and not usable on most carpeted floors.

I would also like the sheet music for your recurring test piece I think it's a great sortof a warmup piece, abit like Bach's prelude in Cm but of course more advanced. I'd like to add that to my little assembly. And I'd like to try it on my newly arrived Kawai CA-99, shipment went crazy fast. The piano is a beast in terms of weight, almost like a regular upright. It is Not mobile. Please do not consider this instrument if you wish to move it often. ;-)

Please note that P-125 has an USB Audio Interface which allows: to use yamaha speakers as computer/smartphone output speakers so you can have background music and play on yamaha at the same time (their volume can be adjusted with use of Yamaha smart piano app); the same way when you use Yamaha P-125 as MIDI controller, you can redirect audio from computer back to Yamaha P-125 speakers. For example, I use Pianoteq program (Linux/Windows) where I have more realistic piano sound and again, I can have it played on Yamaha P-125 speakers. :-D

ThePianoforever it would be awesome if you make some sheet music available for the combo... I’m sure you’re familiar with some software that will make it pretty for printing. I’ve been using software for writing sheet music for the last 4 months. It’s amazing how simple it is to write music that way. Hearing your music played by software allows you to make sure you didn’t make mistakes in the writing and it gives you a new appreciation for how good humans are at expressing music. I may never be Sir Andras Schiff, but I’m better than software (well at least the software I use lol).

Just discovered your channel. Glad to see these 2 models compared. I currently have a 1926 Steinway Model B that I purchased after a partial rebuild after many years college student abuse. Needs serious voicing and regulation. Occasionally, I will be called upon to play at a venue that is either outdoors or doesn't have a piano. Years ago, I could borrow a P-100 and rent an amp, and that worked well for weddings and receptions. 1. The 515 has MIDI connector; the 125 does not. I "think" you can still connect the 125 to a computer via USB in order to input into a program such as Finale. I will definitely need something that I can interface with Finale. 2. As you addressed, both of these pianos are portable, but the 515 costs 2x as much and weighs about 2x the 125. So it's a matter of which one I'd rather drag around for the rare occasion. 3. Since I will likely be spending a lot of time practicing on this piano - as well as recording, arranging, and gigging - I'm asking for an opinion that likely doesn't have a definite answer. You're certainly more advanced than I, but would you be satisfied if you were confined to practicing and performing on the 125 for an extended period of time, or might you be constantly wishing you had spent 2x the $$ and gotten the 515? - except when you're loading and unloading it into and out of the vehicle. LOL. Thanks, Keith Looking forward to exploring more of your videos.

Simply love your reviews, please keep your health. I previously asked for a more pricier review, the Kawai CA-99 but heck you can skip that, I went and testplayed it. I have bought it and should have it next week. However you should still consider this instrument as a review as it has a proper soundboard despite being an electric piano. So it's not a hybrid per se, placing it on an intereresting level between hybrids (6000-8000 USD) and high end electric pianos (2000-3500USD).

Many thanks! As always, this is a fantastic review! May I ask you a question: We are currently using a Yamaha P85 in our studio. I have two bands and we only play for fun at my home. We also have a Korg keyboard for all sounds other than the piano sound. Would the P125 would be a small, medium or huge improvement? The P85 is connected to an amp with two big BOSE speakers. We are playing old rock, rock, pop and some country songs. Thanks in advance for the answer! Keep up the very good work...

I think the 515 feels like it has smoother transitions and more richness... still the P125 is pretty ok. Would be fine for live.

Nice review! I hope your staying safe! Do you think the Fender Rhodes on the P-125 is better than the P-515? To my ears, I thought so. I actually liked the P-125 DX-7 sample a lot better!

For a beginner, would you say we’ll be able to notice the quality of the action in the P125? How long have you had yours? I’m hearing mixed reviews that the P125 action is fairly lacking and that the keys get noisy after a few months. Don’t know if non pianists would mind or notice? I really want to purchase the P125 and your reviews have helped!

I am a "beginner" (picking up piano after decades of not playing) and I bought the P125. I have honestly just fallen in love with this instrument! Beautiful, clear, clean, and neatly fits under the TV in my apartment - it's as if it didn't take any room at all. I play it for probably at least an hour a day.... And it just sounds wonderful! I would recommend to get the wooden case and the 3-play pedals - that makes it act and feel like a "real piano". No matter what you buy, there will be differences. My standard is that it HAS to feel like a true "instrument". Just today, I played a Casio 160 digital piano, which is a fairly well rated "beginner" piano and was startled - it just didn't feel like a "true instrument" to me. No surprises, the owner had "upgraded" to a "real piano" and if I had that, I would be tempted to do the same.

I am considering buying either the DGX 670 or the P 515. I am 74 and never played piano before but have always wanted to learn. Especially since my father was a very accomplished player. I am in love with the Bosendorfer sound in the P 515. Unfortunately it is not available in the DGX 670. Am I being too selective and critical especially for someone who is very new to the piano? Also I have taken to heart your discussions of the touch on the 515 because of the wooden keys and the design which is a step up from the DGX 670. I would also like to know if you recommend any particular online lesson study course. I would lean and little more towards classical bt with a desire to be able to play some Frank Sinatra etc. Thanks for your help. Also look forward to any comments from others. Thanks all

Hey, James. I'm curious to know if the in-person experience is the same as it comes through over the video. You can tell the difference in audio quality between the 515 and the 125, but the contrast is not stark, by any means. The 515 does sound a little deeper and richer, but through the video it is very subtle and you have to listen closely to catch it. Is that the same experience in person? Or is it as subtle in person as it is through the video?

Hey Chris! Listening to these sort of videos on decent headphones or speakers is paramount, laptop or phone speakers make everything sound poor. I thought the sound difference in the video was pretty noticeable but it's definitely much more noticable in person. The P515 has huge speakers that are way louder and higher quality than the P125, and you can hear the quality difference immediately.

@@ThePianoforever Yeah, I was using headphones, but my good pair of headphones don't have USB connections for my computer. I could still hear the difference, but your point is probably on point. If I had higher quality headphones for my computer, it may have been more apparent.

I'd actually be very keen to hear the difference in sound that something like a Hybrid Grand (Yamaha N3X) would make in comparison to something like the Yamaha C3X - would you be able to play a few pieces and see if a digital hybrid comes close to reproducing the expressiveness out of an acoustic?

The P-515 seems to be sold out everywhere, especially if you’re looking for a “bundle” package. One well-known website expected to have them back in stock by July 2020. Now (June 16, 2020) they’re hoping for late September. I guess I’ll just have to wait .🙁🎹

Thank you man I am looking for my first piano ( im totally a beginner ). At first i was looking for a Roland P30 , but after watching your videos I might go towards Y P125. Now I wonder, is it "Ok" to learn piano without pedals ? Can we learn it later or should we learn to use it immediately ?

i was thinking of getting a roland p30 too until i saw his video so afterwards i was having trouble deciding between yamaha p125 (my friend has one) or kawai es110 and afternoon watching his video i picked kawai es110 out of personal preference for the pedal, i actually haven’t been able to use a pedal besides my teacher’s (why I’m getting a new piano rn with a pedal) but i recommend you try using it too now it makes stuff sound nice and it’s good to learn early

Thanks James. Can you also do a comparison between the 515 and CLP-645? Both have NWX action but I'm not sure if there is a difference in the sound and action since the Clavinova is supposed to be better? Also it would be great if you can throw in the Kawai CA79 because I've heard it has one of the best actions.

Clavinovas aren't supposed to be better. They're high-class home instruments, but the P series are portable instruments. Most of them cheaper than Clavinovas, thats true, but the P515 is better than both CLP-625, CLP-635/CLP-665 and some CVPs in key action or even sound. Its a portable CLP-645 but 2 years younger, which means they could've done slighty improvements over the 645's technology since this model is already out of stock and waiting for replacement(probably CLP-745), while the P515 will stay on the market for at least till 2022/2023.

Thanks James, awesome video. Could anyone please measure the force to press middle C on p515? I was surprised to see my Fp90x needs around 90 grams, so I gotta use a MIDI controller. No videos really conveyed the weight correctly. I haven't found one to try in a store yet. Thanks all.

I don't need the tuner but I do need that piano. I think this finally sold the P125 for me. While I will use it with midi sample libraries most of the time, the sounds are good and fun enough for me whenever I don't want to bother with my DAW. Thank you!
