@@stephanieann6622 I think maybe something with the brazing on the sleeved, galvy that appears to be on the other side of this wall and it being galvanized makes it easier to break the braze? to lead you scrambling to the otherside.... probably in a crawl space?

My town's pressure comes in at over 100psi in some areas 😅 last time we tried to do this it was rather messy, even with all other faucets in the house open hahah.

@@craigherron1203 Nah. I run that shit raw 😂 plus half of the house is galvanized waterlines so that honestly keeps volumetric pressure down. This week I'm changing everything out and moving the meter+adding a filter. Filter should cut the pressure back a bit but I'll be throwing a prv in for safe measures while i have the system torn apart.

In Texas, but plumbed mostly in Kentucky and Indiana. Those bibs are usually frostproof and soldered in the crawlspace, with the shutoff under the kitchen sink.

You got lucky with this one sir. Good job galvy is always risky when it’s old If those threads were broken you’d have water flowing roughly 5gpm and be torching the city shut off to loosen up. What a terrible scenario for all involved

I had an apprentice bust a pvc waterline near the meter while digging before. We were replacing the shutoff valve but he hit the line. The meter would not shut off. I was able to replace the valve live thankfully.

I like American made tools but those Knipex Cobras and the Plier Wrench are amazing. I dont even use pipe wrenches anymore. I just use the Cobras in different sizes and they really bite down on pipes.

Nice. You can turn on all the faucets in the house to reduce the water pressure to make this repair a little easier, it looks like you may have done that already. I like the Knipex electrical tools and Cobras more than Klein.

Exactly what I was thinking. Opening up several in the house would make this much easier. I’m getting rid of my vacuum barrier on my bib. I hate that thing. It makes all sorts of groaning noises all the time you can hear it in the house. I don’t care if it’s against code.

No. Frost-Free Hosebibbs are Frost-Free because they have long stems that shut the water off inside the insulating envelope of the home., aka they shut off where it's above freezing temps. BUT you MUST REMOVE THE HOSE and any other attachments that would prevent the body of the Hosebibb from draining. The Hosebibb body must also have slight pitch towards the outside.

I don't even have those. Instead i use a splitter to relieve pressure. Works great and no mess of water spraying everywhere. It seems like it would be an easy design adjustment to make the water from releasing the pressure diverted in one direction rather than spray everywhere, but i guess engineers have other priorities.

You can back it off without it leaking much and get new Teflon and dope on the threads before the switch so it’s super quick. Dont need to mess around with a bunch of flowing water

And THIS is why if you have city water, you should have your own main shutoff INSIDE the home, incase something happens, you can at least turn it off in the home and not worry about water pumping into your home till everything’s under water.

I fucked up at a building. I did a hose bib live at their car wash area not knowing that it was tied into the outlet side of their booster pump they had the old school style that ran at full power and was regulated down afterwards just my luck This was tied in before the regulator 375-425psi It took two people to get the threads to touch just because of the pressure I ended up getting it it was very violent but I will never attempt again. Human verse twin 480v. 50 horsepower 500 ft of head booster pumps The pumps win.

What kind of hose bib is the one he took off, have 2 on a job that I need to pressure wash and those are the only options I have to tap into for water but everythime i hook a hose to them I don’t get enough pressure cause they leak water and air gets into the line which is bad for the pump and inconsistent pressure. I need to replace it or tighten it I need to know what it’s called to fix it or replace it

You say it was 70psi. Im pretty sure that was a static psi. With it free flowing i would say psi was about 30. 70 psi free flowing is wild to change.

It can vary depending on the company. I have seen as low as $175 and upwards of $400. I’d say between $200-$300 is what you would expect. (At least for my area)

Meter was able to be 1/4 turned to restrict some flow. The 1/2” pex feed for this line also ran 80+’ across the house before getting there.

The curb stop was frozen. There is no turning it at that point. You force it and the valve pops off. Then it’s a big mess.

What? The curb stop was frozen in place. My experience with those are if you keep forcing it then the valve pops off and becomes a costly repair.

@@theplumbersplunger i’ve done this before also when not able to turn curb stop off , i go around and open all available taps closest to the point of entry from the bib which is getting replaced, this helps mitigate the volume blasting out … i once had a galvy nipple’s threads tear 1/2 off . With water blasting out i cut rest of the threads off , chamfered the end , and pushed on one of those pvc sharkbite style couplings with a sch 80 nipple and new bibb attached … Then told the customer to have city replace curb stop .. we would later return and replace with a new brass nipple from the drop ear ell inside the wall out 😅

Most homes here have a valve in the ground directly after the meter. Also s valve at the softener loop but that wouldn’t turn the hose bibs off.

I can install a valve live at the meter if absolutely necessary. Wasn’t a huge risk with it being outside. Obviously I’d never do anything live inside a home. Gave options to install a new accessible valve as well.
