Thanks for this! My daughter is not quite ready/old enough for pointe but has super strong feet naturally and was ready for a challenge. Plus most of her class is in pointe shoes. Her teachers put her in demipointe shoes back in August, and her feet have gotten even stronger! She is so much more aware of ankle placement and rolling through than she was before them. Her balance and control have improved so much. As a parent I am huge fan of them. I feel like my daughter is getting a chance to work on some of the smaller strengthening and placement things that will make her a better pointe dancer. Her teachers think she will have a much easier time getting started in real pointe shoes. (We are in the US, and we are one of only two or three schools that use them in our major US city!)

My big problem with soft blocks is that there wasn't enough choice of fit. I had to wear them for my RAD exams and my vocational school tried to enforce them on us for our free classes too but I couldn't find any that were anywhere near wide enough so I ended up with rolling issues that then translated into more long term ankle injuries. I do think they are a great concept, and they are very good for strengthening when fit correctly. In the end we all started de-shanking old, broken pointe shoes because they did the same thing but fit better.

In the RAD syllabus, the students never go all the way up in demi pointe shoes. The exercises using the demi pointe shoes are not pointe exercises (the students switch to pointe shoes for pointe work). In the first RAD vocational level (Intermediate Foundation), most of the class will be in demi pointe shoes, with only a few minutes at the end of class actually en pointe. But even in the last level (Advanced 2), there is still quite a few exercises in demi pointe shoes.

Thank you for talking about demi-pointe shoes. I had bought some about a year ago and ended up returning them because my teacher doesn't approve of them. She said it would be giving me false hope of doing pointe work, and doesn't allow any of her students to wear them. (I am an adult student for reference) I suffered a partial tear on my right Achilles 3 years ago and have been working on strengthening since the injury but still have trouble with releve. I have the range again but can't put full weight at my highest Demi pointe without dropping my heel. I really felt like a demi-pointe shoe would help regain some of the muscle lost a bit quicker. Can you maybe elaborate on why some people may not like to have their students use them. I've heard so many great things but don't want to go against my teachers wishes.
@Subirasri4 жыл бұрын
Get a new teacher. I know that sounds harsh but as an adult dancer any teacher who is that callus and mean doesn't deserve you as a student. Adult dancers do it for the love of dance. There is nothing wrong being in demi-pointe shoes. It will only help strengthen your feet which can even help you in every day life considering you had an injury. The reality is maybe you won't ever be strong enough for full pointe work, or maybe you will. The human body is amazing. The bigger point is that dancing brings you joy. As an adult dancer you are doing it for the joy not to be a prima ballerina, which means no teacher should EVER squash your joy. Just being on demi-pointe might bring you joy. Having the look and the feel of pointe shoes can be a wonderful feeling. Find a new teacher who will share your joy of ballet with you, not try to bring you down. I wish you all the best!
@platedlizard4 жыл бұрын
Since so few schools in the US use them it may be the teacher was just not familiar enough with them. I would look around and interview some other teachers to find one who would help you get to pointe if that is your goal. Adult students may be a bit slower at learning than a child and less flexible at least to begin with, but we have the advantage of maturity and determination, which is very important when it comes to practicing regularly and making progress. Many teachers only see the disadvantages and not the advantages that adult students have.

Russian pointe has a shoe called „First Rubin“ which is basically a very soft point shoe, only for bars, like a demi pointe shoe. The great thing is that it has the same cut as the „Rubin“, and it is very easy to switch. I started with Bloch, didn‘t work for me, Gaynor Mindens didn‘t either. Then I gave up because I thought I‘m a hopeless case, until I found the First Rubin, and now I love pointe work 😂

(totally going through old videos, haha!) Amanda Campos Just get whatever the dance store sells. But make sure you get them well before the exam. Put each shoe inside a thick white cotton sports sock and pound the box with a mallet to soften. You can even drive over them (in a sock) with a car. Whatever it takes to make the box as soft as possible. These are not the kind of shoes you want to get the day before your exam (like say a nice clean pair of ballet flats).

The insole coming off doesn’t really effect if your shoes are dead or not, the other day the insole came out of my brand new pair I had only worn 3 times. Your shoes still could be dead because you have been wearing them for a year, however when it’s your first pair they do tend to last awhile, bc your not doing that much intense pointe work.

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the struggles in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He will help us through the struggle, the stress, and anything we experience in the world. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves, we need Him to help us as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way. NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus. If you have any questions let me know Xx
