They are. I'm tangentially connected to the music scene in my area, after decades of gigging, running clubs, promoting events, etc. The local underground scene these days is kids with guitars and drums, as a reaction to electronic music being the mass-market music of the time. It reminds me of the way punk was a backlash against prog and disco, and in the next 5-10 years I predict we'll see a resurgence of rock music. Some of it will also incorporate DJs and electronic elements, but don't be surprised when the next rock power trio makes it big.

First things first: I absolutely adore Stewart Copeland's drumming. Have done so through all the decades that I've known The Police. But whenever I look at the comments section of basically every single Police video here on KZbin I get the feeling that the majority of people are almost compulsively heaping praise on the man. And rightly so, that fella deserves the praise, don't get me wrong.. But so many people are very often ignoring Sting's and Summers' contribution to the band. I mean, think of Sting whatever you want but he wrote almost all of the songs they ever recorded (and I absolutely love Stewart's songs, especially on Reggatta), his bass lines are essential to the songs and his voice is, well, the voice of The Police. Without the amazing soundscapes Andy Summers created with his guitar, The Police wouldn't have been The Police. Not as we know and love them. Between the three of them they made this band, egos clashing and all. True, Copeland formed the band and had the good sense to get that bass playing and singing fella from Newcastle involved in it. So there's that. But once again: it was the three of them that created the inimitable energy and creative force that was The Police. Take one single guy out of the equation and you're left with nothing. At least not with The Police. Appreciate the contribution of each of them. Only together they were The Police. Only together they were one.

@@guimat Absolutely - in terms of dexterity and technical proficiency. No doubt at all. If it comes to sheer musicality - what they were bringing to the table in terms of ideas, structure, originality - they were definitely equals. They were playing off each other. Stewart definitely was making his mark, explosive and absolutely enjoying himself. He always hoped for a reunion. I'm a drummer myself and Stewart Copeland was and is my main inspiration. I saw them play in Amsterdam, back in 1978, in Paradiso. Since then, I was hooked... Okay, Bono suddenly enters the stage, because 'Invisible Sun' deals with Ireland... People who are a bit up to date with the ins- and outs, know that Andy isn't such a fan of Bono and his mates. The expression on his face when the singing penguin enters the stage, tells it all.. Story goes, that after they finished their gig, they handed their instruments symbolically, over to U2, because then they were the greatest band. But just before Andy turned his guitar over to the U2 guitarist, he de-tuned his guitar in a proper way.... Always fun...

This was a brief reunion for the Amnesty International concert, after The Police had broken up in 1984. There was hope of a sixth studio album, but Stewart Copeland broke his collarbone, so it was shelved. Instead the band would not do anything of significance for another 20 years until announcing their 2007-2008 Reunion World Tour. I thankfully got to see them play in sold out show in Atlantic City on November 4th, 2007. Having grown up listening to their music but never seeing them live. This was an awesome experience.

I was there as well. I believe I was 17. My friend won 2 tickets from a Long Island radio station to be right up on the floor. I remember it got hot as hades in the sun as Jersey often is. I just watched the U2 video reminiscing. On to Peter Gabriel next. Remember Yoko Ono 😬 God bless her. Lol

Oh man, I'm so glad they DIDN'T have anybody else on stage with them on the 2008 reunion tour. These extra singers don't add a thing - in fact they detract from the sound of The Police. They were a power trio - they didn't need anybody else filling up the soundscape. Can you imagine if Cream had brought along extra singers and a keyboard player in their reunion? Stewart, Andy and Sting are The Police. Period!

We all know no energy generators were needed in The Police live concerts: there was a direct plug from Copeland to the PA and lights. What a drummer... Sting was not stupid when he hired Omar Hakim for his first solo album: he knew that whatever his own style was going to be, the man on the drums had to be another beast.

Had Stewart not broke his arm falling off a horse while trying to record new material for the greatest hits album we probably would have seen more police music . Honestly they all needed to take breaks had they continued and pursued their solo interest as they did . They could have made new music every 4 to 5 years and lived out their potential . They had a great musical chemistry it’s just they fought for control mainly sting and Stewart had issues but while the music part sting should have left to Stewart and Andy - it’s clear sting was the best lyricist and a great one at that . They could have made it work if they wanted to badly 😎🎸🎶 what a great band and musical heroes of mine

Lol. I snuck backstage, literally jumped a fence for the Amnesty International Show in 1988 at the Los Angeles Coliseum. I remember meeting Telly Savalas for like 2 seconds before being apprehended, and kicked out. That was a super strong show. Springsteen, Tracy Champman, Sting, Peter Gabriel. I do remember Sting parading around like a King with a court behind him. That struck me as odd and sort of prickish. I was 18. Good times.

The backing synth is absolutely overkill for this songs and takes away from Andy's genius arpeggio, which should be louder in the mix. Can barely hear it for the freaking synth. They previously used it effectively in the chorus...just as a single note droning in the background. Totally distracting from a great song here.

It was 1986, the time when synths almost took over from guitar as the lead instrument. Whenever i watch a concert from this time period, even by a guitar-driven band, guitar is always either lower in the mix than the synths or just have some weird reverb that make it sound less powerful.
