Absolute comic genius. So much of his act was ad-libbed, he did all his own stunts. Michael Crawford, an incredible comedian / actor / entertainer / singer etc.

It wasn't that he was stupid or dumb, it was the fact he was so naive about life and interacting with other people. Michael Crawford is a genius. Those body movements and facial expressions. He could make people laugh without saying a word.

Hard to believe that "Frank" went on to create one of the most iconic characters in modern musical theatre as the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera. A hugely talented man and a really good person - my special needs son and I had the pleasure of meeting him when he was appearing at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas in EFX. He spent nearly half an hour with us BETWEEN SHOWS and it's a day my son still talks about 23 years on.

One of my favorite comedy shows when I was a kid growing up in Nigeria. We got to watch reruns in the local TV station. Frank was a disaster but with a pure, harmless heart. It was his physical humor - facial expression and squirming - and those awkward pauses before delivering his responses that we always fun to watch. Never got old.

Michael Crawford is the definition of genius. His singing voice is amazing. As the Phantom of The Opera he was sensational. But in Some Mother's his incredible talent is at its peak. No one else could elicit so much laughter from just facial expressions and body language, few could tell so much story without saying a word.

Frank Spencer rocks. The thing I love about the character is that, although he's so inept at everything, he has a heart of gold, and he's actually a good father to his little girl. Classic show that remains hilarious no matter how old it gets.

Frank wasn't simple he was just very naive and innocent. His intentions were genuine in everything he did but he wasn't very good at anything. Michael did his own stunts, something actors wouldn't do or be allowed to do today. From watching Filipe's reaction this should be a dvd box set you should get and it may be being shown on UK Gold.

I remember an interview where Michael indicated that Frank's "childlike" reactions when things went wrong, were based on similar reactions from his own (4 year old ?) daughter & which he was able to imitate with Frank's character. When he has that "look" on his face & hesitates to stop & think about the situation, to me it is the perfect example of how some children would react.

The subtlety - not that there's a huge amount - comes in some of the quieter moments. there's a sweetness to his relationship with his wife and little girl that leaves you 100% on his side. The scenes where he sings to his daughter are beautiful. Sometimes that sweetness means that underlying the broad comedy is a strand of judgment against those who are unforgiving and cold Haven't seen an episode in many years - but loved it growing up.

Extremely skilled in real life, with fantastic signing voice. His own stunts show great athletic and coordination ability, many stunts simply dangerous. As his roll in this show the precise opposite, a person raised by a mother mollycoddling the son to the point where he is extremely uncoordinated, unable to do anthing right, always completely mucking up anything he does. The only two successes in life seem to be to get a wife and have a child because anything and everything else becomes a massive disaster. Also surprising is how his wife manages to stay loyal to him, inspite of all the havoc he creates. Certainly never ever manages keeping any job no matter how simple.

I loved watching him when the series first aired. In one episode he (literally) demolished an entire street, very dangerous, and all done in one take. He was working as a professional opera singer when he was only a boy, and one piece of music he sang in had to be re-recorded, because the mikes were picking up the sound of him eating peanuts. He appeared in the film version of Hello Dolly with Barbara Streisand, and had a solo, It Only Takes a Moment. Michelle Dotrice, who played his wife in Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, was the little girl in the original Mary Poppins film.

Lovely to see you two enjoying a humour that you didn't grow up with and a style you may not be used to (?), gotta say I nearly got a tad emotional - these sort of sit-coms were part of my childhood (mainly on a Thursday night) and to see a couple of Americans giggling along is .......... well ............ lovely. Dunno how long you've been in the UK, but welcome. EDIT: Michael Crawford is an acting icon now and I don't think you have to be "American dumb" (I don't agree with the stereotype btw) to appreciate this simple (complicated stunts) humour - MC based Frank Spencer on his daughter's child like character, innocence and sense of wonder - she must have been a lovely child.

Nice to see you reacting to one of my favourite childhood comedies of the 1970's. Pity though, this top ten countdown didn't inclide two classic episodes: The one where a cliff top picnic goes wrong & the 'one with him rollerskating'. I suggest you search youtube for those clips as saying any more would ruin the fun. The rollerskating clip is probably the most famous & Michael Crawford did his own stunts.

By just watching the clips you pick up on his innocence, childlikeness, indecision, and complete lack of understanding of most things. But the character as a whole is more rounded; If you watch some episodes you'll see he is fiercely loyal to his wife and he never stops trying. The episode you need to watch is one when he is on roller skates...It is shot in a single take, and goes on for about a minute, including going down a set of concrete steps and passing under a lorry. Try to find it if you can. I just typed 'Frank Spencer on skates' and found it. There are multiple cameras used, but it is legendary for being shot in one take, as I said. Enjoy ;)

This is a vital aspect of the character that is often overlooked. If he was just the buffoon who made a mess of everything, the audience would probably look on him with contempt. But when you see him talking to his little girl at night and singing her to sleep, his love for his family was palpable. He was a man who was constantly a victim of circumstance, but also one who was endlessly optimistic and hopeful for the future. And that, I think, is the reason he was so beloved.

Exactly true, Graham, as in one episode, goes to see a psychiatrist who finally tells him he's a failure, and Frank knows in his own mind that he thinks he is, but he became a father in it, so that is an achievement in that he was a good father to Jessica in certain ways.

These shows are from 1973 so the humour was a lot different then , The expression "Some mothers do have them" is meant to refer to someone clumsy or foolish. and the main character Michael Crawford has had many major roles as a hugely successful musical performer on the West End and Broadway stage, in popular shows such as Barnum and The Phantom of the Opera. He has also been i Hollywood musicals such as Hello Dolly. Love the videos by the way.

Most of these comedy shows were very well written. Watching the odd clip out of context is like skipping pages in a novel. Michael Crawford allegedly copied some of his facial mannerisms from his young daughter. 'Frank' was an innocent, trying his best in a grown-up world which he wasn't really prepared for. The constant "mishaps" he encountered weren't always his fault.

The Frank Spencer character would have a support worker assigned to him these days or some sort of care package. He is the ultimate socially inept naïve character. A lot of the show is funny though if you suspend disbelief. It is farce type comedy and mostly worth a watch. It was very inventive in its day and he did some incredible stunts himself, some of which would simply not be permitted these days due to concerns over safety of the actor.

Ok I admit I haven t read all the comments, but has anyone said the role of Frank and indeed the series was written with the legend that is Sir Norman Wisdom in mind. Norman did his own stunts and in fact for one of his comedy films he's in a wheelchair which tips him out of a window onto the top of a moving ambulance which races through the streets until he eventually flies off. Norman was a huge comedy star and the insurance company wouldn't let him do it, a stunt man was hired. But the stuntman hurt himself doing the stunt and couldn't do it. Norman did the stunt without the insurance company knowing and did it better than the stuntman. These clips you have don't show that the series had lots of stunts in. As the show had been written for Norman including stunts they had to have an actor who was willing to do the kind of stunts Sir Norman was known for. As we know now Micheal Crawford was that man. So why did Sir Norman turn it down? Well when he read the script he thought it childish humour. But on seeing the show with Crawford in the role he regretted not taking the role.

Ah, yes, I remember seeing Norman Wisdom in pantomime at the Liverpool Empire in 1973 ;). Michael Crawford was a master of physical comedy, did all of his own stunts, and imbued the character of Frank Spencer with an innocent charm that drove all of his protagonists to exasperation.
