As a scoutmaster teaching these skills to scouts, I have to keep kits on the cheap for my boys and families. I found that a small sealable Planco fishing lure kit from Walmart made a great fire kit container. It’s plastic, it latches shut, it has a rubber seal around the lid, and it’s cheap as chips. When everything is wet from the weather, the contents of the fire kit are dry as a bone. Big fan of carrying a hank of jute twine for tinder. Love the idea of a small votive candle. It’s cheap, handy, and reusable.

An excellent idea to break down good kits and offer details on the individual components. Prebuilt kits often pack low-quality items that will let you down when the item is most needed. I appreciate the concept of purchasing quality components at the best prices so we can operate with confidence.

+1 on carrying 2 Bic lighters. Since the butane in Bics can leak out if the gas button is pressed, a suggestion is to carry your second Bic in an old pill bottle, perhaps even in the one with your fatwood and jute. That way, your backup is fully gassed up if you need to use it.

I have that UST orange Firestarter. The ferro rod is good but the striker is bad. My titanium scissors strikes more sparks and easier ( less pressure) than the striker that came with it.

If you are lost in a no burn area, a fire will get a response nearly immediately.

Get rid of the child proof guard on that lighter.

@@Uncle_Z It'll be easier to light with gloves on and also easier to dry out if you should get it wet another thing if the lighter should run out of fuel you can remove the wind guard from it and spark it to possibly light your tender.
