There are nuances in each and every steps in foreign diplomacy. In the time of UPA 1&2 , Pakistan got 18 brand new F-16 Block 52s. In 2016, during NDA regime, Pakistan was denied by US from getting additional brand new block 52 F-16s. In 2015, Pakistan was also denied from getting 15 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters. Subsequently, Pakistan was also denied from getting 39 T-129 ATK helicopters from Turkey which has an American engine. This time, US may have made a deal with Pakistan to upgrade it's F-16s in exchange of something in the context of China. World is all about interests. You may find in future that India is getting F-18 Super Hornet for it's navy. Even India may get F-35 as well with a condition that it wouldn't be operated simultaneously with deployed S-400 batteries.

Let the Americans sell weapons to the Pakistanis. They have done this in the past to irritate India and only ended up harming their own interests as Pakistan has been a Chinese ally since half a century and will continue to be so for the next few decades. For us here in India, it is a gentle reminder of the fact that at the end of the day, we have to look out for ourselves and cannot rely solely on either erratic USA or declining Russia

In my opinion it is not a simple routine upgrade of manuals, documents etc. Its much more than what meets the eye. Let me elaborate on why I say so. US at the minimum achievs 3 strategic objectives: 1)Dollar sale - though 450m maybe a very insignificant amount of US export, however here’s where it gets exciting, 2)Ensures Pakistan continues to use (and depend) on US military gear, thereby denying China an open field of filling in any vacuum created by US staying away in supplying military gear to Pakistan. (Yes US military sales to Pakistan may have decreased in the recent past ,ceding space to China) 3)The F16 upgrades create uneasyness in India, it fuels insecurity. Consequently India will look forward to address its insecurities by procuring more arms. Who are the beneficiaries of India procuring arms ? Its the US, West and Russia. So its a win win situation either way for US, and a master stroke of US forgien policy, isn’t it !

But the real quetion is why in every tactical skirmish IAF always loses 1+ Fighters whereas PAF almost never. Worth thinking about. Underestimating the PAF's effectiveness has always been India's achilles heel.The only time India has had a clear advantage was during 1971, due to Pakistan's own blunder and stupidity, otherwise the record is very clear about PAF. PAF pilots are considered some of the best , ask the Israeil Air Force.

Even before this deal the IAF is dwindling in power and numbers. 36 Rafales decided instead of 126 and the can kicked down the road by floating another tender for 114 aircraft. This govt does not look like ordering more with 2024 elections they dont want a perception of scam. Even if they place an order now it will take years for the aircraft to arrive. You are then running down you air force not just in quantity but also in quality. Sukhois and Rafales are the only long workhorses. Rest will need retirement in some time - jaguars, mirages and mig29. This will be disastrous becuase older they grow their war worthiness declines as better weapons get into the market every year. If we are happy with a 20 squadron air force [rafale+ Sukhois + LCA] we better plan lot more - mid air refuellers, AWACS , ISTAR, extended range bramhos regiments, armed heron tp and S400 all networked with AI and men. Most likely killer move will come from China who will loan/sell their stealth to PAF. DRDO promises too much to match their own repute. Are we ready for a situation where PAF has stealth fighter?? Or are we sleep walking ??
@sankalp6872
@sankalp6872 2 жыл бұрын
Sleepwalking? Perhaps, but toward a cliff? Unlikely. Pakistan is in no condition to wage a war while the Chinese are so many miles ahead in the air force superiority that even a dozen f22 raptors won't change it. However, war is not about dog fights anymore. Modern-day warfare is about stealth, reconnaissance, and beyond-visual range games. That is where India needs to dominate.
@sampharoj416

Can you post what you think is needed in numbers of each? Lot more is not a quantity. With Pakistan becoming a bankrupt sea and China having to fight off the west flanking them in the south China sea a full conventional war with India seems unlikely in the next decade or even two. Perhaps investing in Indian infrastructure and economy would better benefit India in defending itself than buying one off military assets in the short term?

I am not talking of a fight to finish war. Kargil, Parliament attack, 26/11, Pathankot are all in stances we needed a quick and precise punitive action against the adversary to escalate the cost of cutting us even 1 time. At these instances we were clearly not technologically well prepared to do the right thing. With tge tech available today we should be able to hit terror infra any time we chose without having to cross airspace and block most of what adversary thow back us. Our size and GDP warrants such levels of capabilities. I am no expert to crunch and provide how many fighter squadrons we need, that is the job of people who have access to data from war games. But when you see pilots flying MiG 21 in 2022 you know you got a quality problem. Jaguar engines upgrade did not work out and MiG 29s are a pain to maintain in flyworthy condition. But the 272 sukhois + 5 squadrons of rafale + 10 squadrons of LCA + Mirage and 2 squadrons of some stealth aircraft is needed - just a plain guestimate based out of a plan to keep only war worthy birds in squadrons and an airforce that is technologically sound and not dependent on a few squadrons for real action. Already 25 J10s have arrived to counter Rafales you may see J20 just to mess India as well. So it is sleepwalking into a ditch if not a cliff.

The Chinese will be back at soon at the time of their choosing. And they will prep and prop Pak as well as they can. This F-16 support from US is their pay for helping hit Al qaeda top guy in Kabul somevweeks ago. Just as block 52 could have been a pay for Abbotabad strike on Osama. This pattern of we lagging behind is apparent in all critical fields of war fighting- their Agosta subs for long had AIP our scorpenes dont, their 155mm artillery house is much better than ours. We had the chance to fix both - get french AIP on Scorpenes and build more K9 Vajras. But no. DRDO and HAL directors are promising to build everything under the sun with them having no track record of having delivered anything in time or world class war winning quality - perhaps except bramhos and mrsam which are joint ventures

It's more about SLAPPING India down for not doing what the US(White Sahib) wants and reminding India it can hurt India too. Quoting facts and figures is simply to easy and misses the bigger picture. Because today Pakistan has no status. Today India main enemy is China, and now India itself developing the weapons of the coming generation . Actually the mig 29 had the better missiles as the R73 missile could be fired by just looking at the target. This capability was not there with the F16 until AIM9X arrived. What really turned the balance as Shekhar said was the AMRAM 120C missiles.

That's what he said. F-16 was better in terms of it's avionics, electronics suite, and ECM capabilities. However, IAF felt that Mig-29s with their A2A missiles should be enough to tackle any threat the F-16s may pose and rightly so, at least at that point in time. When you say just by looking at the target I assume you mean helmet mounted sights. Missiles even today need a valid 'lock' on their target so just looking firing won't actually work.

Few things I want to add to this for my Indian friends. PAF always tries to maintain the first shot capability. This is not a secret. Many top ranking PAF officers have said that in interviews that they strive for a weapon system which provides the pilot first shot advantage. The recent purchase of J10-C from China with SD-10 (Export variant of PL-12) is to counter the IAF purchase of Rafale jets with meteor missiles. The Pakistan armed forces purpose built their arsenal for India and no other country. On the other hand India goes for an approach which is more global and tries to counter Chinese threats in the region. This gives PAF a bit of advantage in a sense that their vision remains focused on a single adversary.

Also PAF isn't a small air force by any stretch. It is decently equipped for the size of the country. It literally has more AWACS than IAF and more than half of IAF's squadron strength, IAF being among the largest air forces in the world.

India shouldn’t lose any sleep over this deal. The US will definitely not be providing Pakistan with the F-35 nor any future 5th gen aircraft which is what would really make a difference on the subcontinent. The harboring of Bin Laden as well as the ISI’s provision of material support and intelligence to the Taliban throughout the entire Afghan war destroyed any pretense that Pakistan is our ally. Apart from being concerned about Chinese influence in Pakistan, the US is worried about Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal especially after the Taliban’s victory next door. I wouldn’t be surprised if we already have plans drawn up to neutralize the threat of terrorists taking control of these weapons in the event that the government is overthrown.

Completely agree!! I also don't expect, SG to mention Late Manohar Parrikar, First 'Technocrat' Raksha Mantri, of India, who nullyfied the block 52 sale of F16 @ 2013-14 with fantastic deal of Rafale, This tilted the balance in India's favor, so much that, What I read that China fears India's Air force now!! All of Rafale's ordered, are with India's pocession now!! If Air force still functions on Resp. Parrikar's method, we can build our own aircrafts Now!!

I would be reluctant to sell to Pakistan because they should be focusing on internal democratic reforms, budget shortfalls, and current humanitarian crisis...

Old F16 jet engine mounts based on Alloy 718 used to crack due to grain boundary embrittlement. The USA had to make metallurgy patches and alloy changes. It was a problem that was solved by special time/temperature thermal aging treatment where a large oven is used to perfectly make the proper metal chemistry. Read my published Naval Research Lab article. “An investigation of second phases in alloy 718 using electrolytic extraction techniques.” Thank you for pointing out the value of USA warrantees, think of a tiger on a leash as a good thing for Neighbors who prefer peace. As was implied in the KZbin, the USA stands behind it’s advance F16 technology and will provide maintenance support 30 years later as long as the customer is friendly towards maintaining peace! The F16 is a real bargain, look how long it lasted! Go ahead and make your own jets but know that each jet “power cycle” , that high G, Ultra fast climb and acceleration, causes the hot metal to redistribute the metal elements. Ask your jet engine supplier if they have metallurgists who can show you thermal fatigue data versus metal phases.. The public has no idea how severe the F16 training missions are compared to the non-aggressive testing done by competition…imagine buying a brand new multimillion dollar car and you decide to purposely run it at what seems like an ultra destructive speed without regard to the value of the car…run the engine in neutral at FULL rpm for 30 minutes. The engine glows red and smoke pours out and the exhaust pipe looks like it is going melt. Now add the stress of pushing a tractor trailer, repeat this every hour for three cycle times. Keep running a Power cycle every day. The USA and UK have many years of super sophisticated metallurgy secrets. Believe me, competitive jet engines lack the longevity due to real world constant Power cycle thrusts. If you search the KZbin, in a recent video you can find a Russian MIG losing control on a power cycle take off, I suspect the engine metals are failing. A typical USA jet training run uses 3 power cycles per run, extremely high temperature, very stressful thrusts used only in war! Russia now knows that their new MIGs are micro fatigue cracking and have severe thermal fatigue problems under real world western war conditions. All the countries who bought from a Russian terrorist state have no warranty on such a maintenance intensive jet.
