Yoga, Sanskrit inspired Sufi epics-Chakras became ‘mystical stations’, gods turned ‘angels

It’s become received wisdom that the history of Indian ‘Hinduism’ and ‘Islam’, imagined as monolithic entities, are irreconcilable. But most medieval Hindus and Muslims didn’t follow the hostile rhetoric of courts. They inhabited a world of Awadhi Sufi epics with Hindu protagonists, which paid homage to ancient Indian mythological tropes. Anirudh Kanisetti explores this strange world, where the line between Sufi and Yogi was often blurred.

@@noneoftheabove666 I’m not sure ofcourse, but If you look at Bengali Vaishnava Padavali, there is a strong component of compassion towards other sentient beings and a rigid adherence towards Bhakti rituals( Kirtan, Sadhana) discipline which can also be found in the Algeria/ Maghreb sufis and Persian sufis. I am an Indian and I believe that the Bhakti movement started here and ofcourse the Upanishads influenced many mystics around the world. But the Sufi music speaks to me and i am old enough to know that where there is human heart there is longing for the divine. No one needs to teach an evolved person to fall in love with God- Its something we are born with but try to suppress. And it is very likely that if 2 people love the same entity with an ardent fervor, they would be inspired by each other, No?

@@ansh_u_r Agree- I def believe that the Upanishads and their definitions of Moksha as union with ‘God’ or ‘Infinite consciousness’ came first and was a like an oasis to all these beautiful people who felt that deep ardent inexplicable longing which wasnt met by finite things/ people. However i do feel like every true devotee( not religious supremacists) picks and chooses how to love their God better and the Some of the Sufi masters devotion knew no bounds. So i think it could have been both ways
