Although much was lost through invasion of fundamentalist of different religions much was gained through spiritual dialogue with alternate thought streams. However India cannot rest on its laurels as the fundamentalist hindutva movement is the enemy within that is likely to destroy much more in the spiritual and behavioural spheres. I was born a Hindu but rejected all religions including Hinduism as a child. I studied yoga and meditation and gradually adopted Buddhism as my dharma. Thank you for this brilliant well researched talk which can potentially dispel the ignorance of hindutva if only they listened with an open mind instead of blindly accepting the vitriolic bile of their politicians. But India is huge and its philosophical and spiritual wealth too powerful to succumb to such momentary hiccup.

If you want to understand a core interpretation of Hinduism (Advaita Vedanta), reading the Shankara commentaries - 10 upanishads, Brahma Sutras & Gita by Swami Ghambirananda english translations is a good idea. Just know it can be an exhausting amount of info and a cerebral exercise with Shankara's commentaries. If you don't want all of that, just read 'Katha Upanishad', its pretty accessible cause its a story & conveys the philosophy and is fun (my fav).

@Dharma Defender I think you're quite incorrect on that.. I am aware you can get other interpretations (namely vishishtadvaita), but if you read the upanishads, the importance and stress on the atman and nirguna brahman (no attributes) as the same non-dual reality is undeniable from the very beginning (800BCE). Plus I think its the most logical one, through shankaras bhasya, but thata on my study. But not saying hinduism doesn't have other interpretations, for sure.

This buddhist nhilistic nonsense sounds good only till someone with bigger army comes and destroys your sangha like Bhakhtiyar khilji did and Buddhists abandoned thier faith afterwards. Madam, Any one can study the theological intellectual similarities and dissimilarities btn Vedanta and Sufism.Devotion to their chosen God and direct mystical experience are the important similarities. Inception was a brilliant movie, though difficult to understand in one go.. It's hard for anyone to wrap their head around Sanathan Dharma especially for monotheists who have always focused on its external appearance. Try the analogy of science. Commentaries are like review articles that reference previous articles.

You have summarised the Vedanta in a very helpful way, well done! I do have somethings to add though (not as criticism but just sharing my thoughts, as I have very limited knowledge in this field): You have catagorised the Bhagavad Geeta separately, and it's often seen that way too. But sometimes it's also catagorised as an Upanishad titled "Geetopanishad". Also we can't say that Shankacharya didn't give any importance to devotion, as that will not explain the many hymns he has composed for different dieties. Also not to mention his famous composition Bhaja Govindam in which he advises an old to stop overexerting himself in this old age in learning the difficult Sanskrit grammar, rather to do small acts of worship with acsetism. You can say rather he gave importance to ascetism and practicality in actions, rather than strict and complicated rituals.

I think the emphasis in the Gita was not on the ritualistic aspect of the Vedas par se but rather how one ought to actually understand the significance of the rituals. Blindly performing rituals for the sake of rewards is considered rajasic (action driven) while performing the rituals in full awareness and paying obeisance to the priest for his role in the ritual is considered sattvic (spiritually driven)

@@sagniknath5537 yes, about Gita I just pointed that it's also considered an Upanishad sometimes. Also it contains teachings more aligned with Upanishad than other literature. Of course then it it natural that like other Upanishads it emphasis on the Philosopy behind teh vedic teachings. The point about the rituals was a different one about Shankaracharya, that it's not that undedmined devotion itself, he just thought that intricate rituals are not essential and that minimum action done with a sense of true devotion and sannyasa can help in salvation. That's why he did become a sannyasi but still wrote devotional hymns to the dieties.

I would caution against equating Hindus to this philosophy. We are a real culture, with our own problems of discrimination and intolerance. The vedas set out the structure for the caste system as well, which is very real and still alive.

I actually like Vishishtadvaita. It allows for individuality, places emphasis on Bhakti for salvation and rejects eternal damnation. All souls will be saved eventually in this lifetime or in another furture lifetime.

Vedic tradition never demanded that their students should blindly believe or "swallow" anything -- “ IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT , LUMP IT “ TYPE DOGMA. THEY ARE ASKED TO APPLY THEIR CONSCIENCE . No guru wants his students to believe; he wanted his students to understand and agree . A teacher wants students to understand, to know, unlike a SINGLE HOLY BOOK DOGMA preacher who wants listeners to believe. Moksha in Vedic tradition is given through the grace of god alone and only for those who deserve it according to Good karma . God never forgive Sin. After death this deserving soul is liberated from the endless cycle of births and rebirths. The body of the “realized man” or Jivan Mukt continues to exist until his karmas and prarabdhas ( greater responsibility ) has worked itself out, and then his mortal coil falls away on his own free will , and he attains Moksha. Such people have sterling virtues like conscience, lack of ego, gratitude , lack of desires- selfishness- greed- jealousy- anger- and fear, unlimited compassion, respect for universal laws, raised consciousness and humility ( which yours truly does NOT have though I hold a rare Moksha Jatakam ). In Sanatan Dharma it is your own conscience, (which arose out of awakened consciousness ) which connects you to the greater metaphysical unity. "Patience, Pardon, Suppression of will, Stay away from Theft, Purity, Control of desires, Wisdom, Knowledge, Truth, Controlling Anger. These 10 qualities are considered as main characteristics of the Dharma." 'Manu-Smiti' 5000 BC describes the code for leading a disciplined way of life. धृति: क्षमा दमो अस्तेयम्, शौचम् इन्द्रियनिग्रहः । धीं विद्या सत्यम् अक्रोधः, दशकं धर्म-लक्षणम् ।। -(मनुस्मृति-धर्मलक्षणम्)5000BC Dharma leads you on the path of self realisation. Dharma includes adhara or regulation of daily life as per your conscience and written Vedic laws. You conscience is that spark of celestial fire. God resides in your DNA. Dvait vedant and Advait vedant are not the same relegions, simply by the virtue of the fact, that the entire metaphysical standpoint, are almost polar opposites. I think there is more continuity in Indian philosophy relative to other regions. Europe and the Eastern Med suffered repeated barbarian invasions and blasts of religious extremists. Most literature from classical Greece was lost, leaving only about one bookshelf of surviving texts. You can read it all in grad school. By comparison, surviving Indian literature is huge. You couldn’t read it all in a lifetime. Commentaries on commentaries. So Hinduism has evolved layers and layers. The best religion for book lovers and nerds. 🕉

Wait wait wait. Await Vedanta or oneness with consciousness is ultimate goal or Dynana/Jnana. One has to achieve this. Vishishtadwait or Dwait are for those who cannot fathom the concept of Adwaita or dont like it. People are afraid when they are told that your current individuality is an illusion. So these people then opt for Dwait. Most religions are like that way. There is a creator and i'm his creation kinda. Once you establish yourself in Dwait and had experience where you see your chosen Deity in person or talk to him (i.e. Sakshatkara), you become eligible for next ultimate experience of Adwait. Your knowledge is not complete till that. But since you establish quite well in Dwaita, self will take care of you and take you to next level. This happened with Ramkrishna Paramhans (where he cut Kali image with a sword in meditation, thus going beyond name and form). Same with Papaji (disciple of Ramana Maharshi), same with Naamdeo (devotee of Vithala). So to go beyond name and form and any kind of duality is ultimate goal. And finally as Ramana Maharshi said, 'there is no creation, no bondage, no liberation'. Ah what a philosophical beauty.

Sorry. Advaitha (shiva/non dual) is INCOMPLETE without Dvaitha (shakthi/duality). Shiva is powerless without maya (meaning Shakthi not illusion) and the universe/world/ Shakthi cannot be perceived in its current form without Shiva . Shiva and Shakthi always exist together for the perpetual duality cycles to happen. This is Sankhya vedic metaphysics which can be validated by logic, experiment (double slit quantum experiment) and embodied experience (focus + 112 meditation techniques)

There were different philosophies in that period which had huge effects on each other in their way of thinking and perceiving the Universe and Reality, for eg: The Jain concept of vegetarianism where it one of the central concept of the philosophy had its impact on various other philosophies. Similarly, the Vedic concept of dharma, karma, atman, saṃsara, re-incarnation, moksha (nirvana) etc. had its impact on the new school of thoughts, it was in this very environment that these philosophies were born, so it will completely nonsensical to say that they are all mutually exclusive and that they interact or had impact on each other. The concept of meditation, dhyana, yoga have its origin in Yoga school of thought which is Astika. And in the context of Indian/Dharmic philosophy, Astika and Nastika doesn't mean belief or non-belief in God, its means believing or non-believing in the supremacy and authority of Vedas. Even in the Astika school of thoughts, Sāṃkhya, Yoga, Mīmāṃsā don't reject the authority of Vedas but reject a personal God or a creator God. And Buddhism even though in its origin was atheist philosophy but as in expanded and went outside India to Central Asia and East Asia, it took the form of a religion adopting different cultures, languages and beliefs. With time it became a theistic faith and the Mahayana and Vajrayana schools of Buddhism today have gods and goddesses in them. Same applies for Jainism as well. Even in today's India Jains are seen as a part of larger Dharmic fold and not a completely separate religion like the Abrahmics do, because Hinduism itself is an umbrella term of thousands of different beliefs, philosophy, cultures who have their origin in the Indian subcontinent.

Neither the Vedas only contain the hymns of Gods and Goddesses in its Saṃhita, nor they only contain rituals in Aranyakas and Brahmanas, but in the Upanishad part of the Vedas they have some of the most deep philosophical enquiry into the self, consciousness and universe who are centuries prior to any of the darshanas, be they Asitka or Nastika. And this self-enquiry is the fountainhead of the various movements and philosophies in the coming centuries. In Buddhacharita i.e., the Buddha's biography by Ashvaghosha, Buddha is inspired by a Sage who is sitting and meditating under a tree. And even if Buddha didn't focus on rituals or a creator or God but after the splits among various early schools of Buddhism and is it came to be adopted by the merchants, monarchy and the laity it slowly started adopting features which are not inherently Buddhist in their origin and philosophy such as Gods, Goddesses, Rituals, Deification of Buddha etc. but these are now part of almost all popular Buddhist schools.

He didn’t explain the Trinity. Brahma is the creator, Vishnu is the moderator and Shiva is the destroyer. In Hinduism, it’s believed that universe works in cycles and it’s actually hundreds of billions years old. Everything gets destroyed after certain time period known as Yugas and the life will start again. There are different yugas, named according to what the life will be about, during that period. In one yuga living things were close and aware of the creator and this current Yuga is the one where living beings are least aware about those stuff, and this will be the last one. Everything will be destroyed after this yuga and the cycle of universe will repeat. So the concept of God in Hinduism is really different from other religions, especially Abrahmic ones.

Anthony the Great Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma are just cosmic allegories for the conscious, immanent ( athma ) transcendent and omnipresent divine. Their wives (shakhti, lakshmi and saraswathi) are just cosmic allegories for intelligent energy. Husband and wife always exist together for the perpetual duality cycles to happen. Shiva and shakthi (destruction), Vishnu and Lakshmi (sustain or dharma or balance) and Brahma and saraswathi (creation or manifestation). Another example is summer/winter sustained by fall or summer. Point is, 3 basic material constituents are created by the divine + energy combination. They further differentiate into 5 elements. It also means "Tat Tvam Asi'' meaning - You (conscious and immanent athma or the soul) are (already) that (conscious, transcendent and omnipresent divine) regardless of whether you realize it or not because without the conscious, immanent and omnipresent athma or divine nothing can exist. Identification with thoughts and body is just an illusion because the 5 senses are experienced by the athma or soul and it is NOT the doer. Conscious and omnipresent soul is like a silk thread which goes through different pearls (animate and inanimate) if you think in terms of an analogy.

Brahma isn't Brahman. They are very different. Brahma is a polytheistic deity. There is a particular view of a monotheistic God that is most similar to the Christian view, this would be called Ishwara. When I read Vedanta in college, I was struck with the overpowering sense that Vedanta is essentially the teaching of Christ turned inside out. Brahman as the Father and Atman as the Son; but turned "inside out" in the sense that, rather than teaching the explicit nature and commandments of the Godhead, Vedanta teaches the metaphysical process of union and reconciliation of the Father and the Son, which are identified with the guru and the student.

Except the fact that there is no concept of "god" in Hindu tradition. The non translatable Sanskrit words Brahman and Athma are NOT the same as "god" and "soul" or "son of god" (as you equate it). Why? .In Hindu/Vedic tradition (based on well validated Vedic metaphysics), the "Ultimate Reality" and its body (the universe) are with no beginning. This manifestation is cyclical: a universe comes into being and passes away according to a regular pattern, like inhalation and exhalation. In Abrahamic religions, there was one unique Creation (with a capital 'C') with nothing prior to it. In Abrahamic religions (based on monotheistic assumptions like god, heaven and hell), the created universe is separate from God and has its own self-existence. In materialistic science, creation is a 'big bang' out of nothing. In contrast to both these worldviews, Hindu Vedic metaphysics says the universe is a manifestation of, and form of, the Ultimate Reality. It arises out of the being of the Ultimate Reality, not for any reason, but as a natural process simply because this is the nature of Reality; it is maintained for a while as the form of the Ultimate Reality; and then dissolves (concealment) back into the unmanifest state within the Ultimate Reality. There it lies dormant in potential form until it emerges again at the commencement of another cycle. In Abrahamic religions, God is not immanent. In Christianity, God was not immanent in the universe prior to Jesus, and the unique significance of Jesus is that his historical arrival turned the universe into the Body of Christ, i.e. made God immanent. But according to well validated Hindu/Vedic metaphysics, immanence is the very nature of Reality and not the result of a historical event. It also means, without the immanence of the ultimate reality and its conscious field, manifestation/concealment duality cycles of the universe and other duality cycles of nature are not possible. This is Sankhya Vedic metaphysics (around which the whole hindu tradition was built including its temple, yoga and tantra traditions) which can be validated by logic, double slit quantum experiment and embodied experience. In mainstream Judaism and Islam, God is transcendent but not immanent. There have been popular claims that Sufism is non-dualistic and hence consistent with immanence, but this needs to be qualified in two ways: (i) Sufism has been a very tiny percentage of Islam throughout Islam's history. (ii) Even more importantly, Sufis experience union with God but clarify when asked that this is not an ontological unity and merely a temporary experience of unity. Mainstream Islam considers claims of ontological oneness with God as blasphemy. So, monotheism followed by ABRAHAMIC religions cannot be validated by logic, experiment or embodied experience.

Some Christian mystics have tried to reinterpret things so that it was nondual, but those people tended to be tortured or killed for a reason. It gos against the basic dogma. What you say could be right about Jesus though, perhaps he was a nondualist. I don't really know. It seems like the vast majority of Christians don't self-identify with the Son though - they put Jesus on a pedestal. Few or none say that we are all ultimately like Jesus or can realize ourselves as That. I think this would generally be taken as blasphemous. Now, I guess you could be saying that Christianity is similar to dualist Vedanta schools. But in that case, I think you could make much stronger arguments towards other Indian traditions that are explicitly monotheist and speak of revealed laws. So I assume you mainly are talking about Advaita or other nondualist schools. They are the most relevant Vedantic schools, being what Adi Shankara taught. On the Vedanta side, I don't think guru and shishya match up to Father and Son. It's just fundamentally different. Guru and shishya is basically spoke about in two contexts: philosophically and in terms of parampara (lineage). The word Guru itself means "a remover of darkness" (gu->darkness, ru->remover of). In contrast to most western religion, darkness is not associated with evil but rather with ignorance or lack of knowledge. A dark room is not evil, it is one where we just can't see. A guru could be a person, place, thing, or experience. The guru is not a goal or destination like the Father is in your analogy, but a tool or font of spiritual growth. Most often, in the real world, the guru is a person or textual authority, but doesn't have to be. I'm not going to talk about the guru in terms of lineage, that is pretty obvious. The guru transmits anything from knowledge up to even his own state of consciousness to the student, in order to maintain the parampara (lineage) of the samapradaya (school). In the case of transmission (popularly known through Zen traditions), the important piece is not the guru, but what the guru is transmitting. In fact obsessing over the guru as a human completely misses the point.

Great video however I want to point out misrepresentation of "Achinthya Bhedha Abhedha". It was said that Brahman and Jiva(Atma) are simultaneously one and different and the difference is unknown according to the philosophy. According to Brahma Madhva Gaudiya Sampradhaya (modern day ISKCON or Hare Krishna Movement) with the cornerstone of the philosophy as Achintya Bhedha Abhdha, the similarity is in quality and the difference is in quantity. The analogy given is if God is the sun, the atman is a mere spark. Qualitatively both emits photons of light (similarity), difference is the Sun can sustain planets however a spark can probably start a forest fire but can never have the same potential as the Sun(difference).

Shiva is omnipresent (immanent and transcendent). It means Athman = Brahman. No difference. Your explanation is Dvaita. You can enjoy devotion to a higher power. There is sweetness of separation in it. Vishistadvaita will be like the Sun is made up of infinite sparks/atoms. They enjoy being a part of a higher power. Advaita says everything is same energy - the separation is because of limited perception. They enjoy silence. All these paths have value. Two suggested subjects (but first GREAT informative clip): FIRST - al-Biruni all by himself, if you haven't already done one on him, but in relationship to Hinduism is islam's (lwr cs intentional) "journey" with learning it's errors in how it initially misperceived Hinduism). al-Biruni had a role in this with his treatise on Hinduism being widely respected by leaders from many interpretations of Hinduism. For example Wikipedia begin's it's al-Biruni "Over time, Al-Biruni won the welcome of Hindu scholars." al-Biruni is sometimes considered by many academics I've read anyway, and myself, as islam's Einstein or possibly Leonardo da Vinci because of the breadth of his expertise. Islam's "journey" / evolution with this at first seeming to "them" polytheist religion was for me captivating. TWO - This brings up the second likely a two or three part series I would treasure to see which would be four or five fascinating examples of islam's other "journey's" in how it interacted and learned about and - from - other cultures and religions, and as well among those, those events where islam suffered defeat but in the end the victor's "adopt" the religion of those they had just recently defeated. An example is the Mongols, if my memory is not off, I believe the grandson of Genghis Khan. These are two links I would keep aside to copy/paste and share often. Nirakar (no form), nirgun (no qualities?) material is brahman which exists everywhere and as everything including those black holes....that is not same as monotheistic god concept of the Judaic religions, where god sits on a throne and can get emotional at his own creation. This nirakar when takes a form (sakar) that form shows qualities most important quality being AHAM (Ego) ......which form appeared first is a contention between the followers/disciples of different forms which essentially is one. Vedanta is a monistic thought not a monotheistic idea. Since it considers creation (Maya/illution) is part of the creator it is hard for Judaic religions to understand Hindu/Vedanta concept. When a Yogi "dissolves his self nature" through his focus/penance on Brahman or a vedanti achieves the same through his knowledge they essentially realizes this principle. Except the fact that Hindu temple tradition which is part of dharmic tradition is not a "religion" either. The word religion comes from the latin word Re -ligaire meaning to be bound (by a book). You don't see any Hindu being bound by anything let alone a book, do ya? What is dharma? The word Dharma has the Sanskrit root dhri, which means “that which upholds” or “that without which nothing can stand” or “that which maintains the stability and harmony of the universe.” Dharma encompasses the natural, innate behavior of things, duty, law, ethics, virtue, etc. Every entity in the cosmos has its particular dharma - from the electron, which has the dharma to move in a certain manner, to the clouds, galaxies, plants, insects, and of course, man. Man’s understanding of the dharma of inanimate things is what we now call physics. Violation of dharma by human vehicles creates Karma or cause and effect and reincarnation (birth/death duality cycle). So, the purpose of hindu/dharmic tradition is to minimize Karmic (cause and effect) burden through different technical tools like temples (which are also symbolic representation of well validated Vedic metaphysics Sankhya), yoga, tantra meditation techniques and through examples of dharmic behavior in the form of allegorical stories and real incidents in puranas, Ithihasas (Ramayana, Mahabharata), etc. so that its followers can either fulfill their wishes easily (without violating dharma) by reducing the karmic burden or get Moksha (microcosm to macrocosm) eventually by removing karma completely.

It also means, Stone deities in Hindu temples are neither for worship nor for prayer. Stone deities are used for 2 reasons. a. They are used as objects of attraction (so given bath, food and decorated with makeup, dress, jewels etc) for focus and meditation in the presence of Sanskrit mantra vibrations, augmented by temple architecture, sanctum Sanctorum (space where deities are kept) and shape/ posture of deities. So, hindu temples are seen as powerful energy centers. This technique is for reaching samadhi state which is nothing but the disappearance of perception of subject (ego self) and object (external world or the deity focused upon) split momentarily (temple tradition) or temporarily and permanently (in Yoga tradition) to remove past karma or cause and effect (stored in the subtle body Chitta) and stop reincarnation (birth/death duality cycle) or to fulfill desires with reduced karmic burden b. Stone deities are also symbolic representations of the well validated Vedic metaphysics Sankhya, nature (surya (sun), chandra (moon), rain, thunder devatas etc) and laws of nature (Karma, Dharma devatas etc). Devatas maintain cosmic order. c. Some of the rituals are also symbolic like offering flowers (to give up memories), bananas (for giving up attachments to anything achieved) and breaking coconuts (to give up ego). As far as "ritual powder" or Vibhuti is concerned, it is nothing, but ash applied on the forehead. It is interpreted either as a symbolic reminder that this body is temporary and will be eventually cremated or just to show that in expanded states of consciousness (so called opening of third eye) one can get cosmic experience.(which is equivalent to manifesting matter) d. In the same way, the tradition also gives importance to the concept of dharma or natural law when it comes to both animate and inanimate which contribute to stability and harmony of the universe..(it is not just about humanity). It is the reason why cows/snakes/monkeys/plants/trees are not worshiped but revered for doing their dharmic duty. Always remember, except human species (which violate dharma or the natural law due to ego and free will) non human species (animate and inanimate) are pre-programmed to follow the natural law or dharma.

@@tariq_sharif Caste is a portuguese word for class division. It was used by British to translate the Varna system. But the four Varnas are actually description of mentality of the people that lead to a behaviour and finally a position in society. The Sudras: These are people with lazy temperament and are always required to to be directed to do things and usually don't do work out of critical ability but rather out of instinct like hunger, desires,etc. Vaishyas: This is a kind of mentality where people don't want to work physically so they use their brain in finance to make other people work for them. People like these fall under merchant businessman, etc. Kshatriya: This is a mentality of people where they do their work with utmost passion and also agrresively. So this mentality of people are thought to be closer to God as they had knowledge of spirituality, administration, psychology, etc. So they are usually administrator of a country or state. These Varnas are still relevant in modern age. U can see in any given society, people in the lowest economic position are usually lazy or doing drugs (instinctively searching for pleasure) and even if u offer them opportunity to upgrade they usually end up not doing their work properly. And the other Varnas can be comparatively paralleld with modern businessman, military, political administrator, etc.. Also the Pope in Europe was once considered the God's chosen ruler and thus he held political power in Europe which is very Similar to Brahman in India, although yes human tends to be corrupted so power misuse existed in all religious sector. So, since modern class division can be paralleled with these four Varnas, you can see that it is still grey sector.

@@giffica Abortion is a very modern culture in India, it was prevalent around when the medical technology developed to determine the gender of the baby. In India today it is illegal to check baby's gender due to high rate of abortion. Abortion was done mainly because of economic and later became social pressure and usually in rural areas.

As far as archeological evidences are concerned, there are plenty. SARASWATHI RIVER VEDIC CIVILIZATION (9000 BCE to 4000 BCE) There is enough evidence provided by the researcher from IIT (most famous university in India) that the Saraswati river was perennial and had flowed from the Higher Himalayas between 7,000 BC and 2,500 BC, and that the Harappans had built their early settlements along this powerful river between 3,800 BC and 1,900 BC. The scientists reached this conclusion by determining the depositional ages of the coarse-grained white sand layers that occurred 3 to 10 meters below the modern alluvium of the Saraswathi's floodplain. They also said " The river had uninterrupted flow, starting 80,000 yr ago and the flow continues 20,000 yr ago. It then diminished due to extreme aridity of the last glacial period. However, the river revived around 11,000 yr ago (9000 BCE) and flowed for the next 5000 yr (until 4000 BCE). By the way, Alexander "not so great" also lost against some unknown hindu king named Porus and ran back to Greece as a wounded person. I am sure you would have read the exact opposite of what really happened.

Advaita Vedānta is one version of Vedānta. Vedānta is nominally a school of Indian philosophy, although in reality it is a label for any hermeneutics that attempts to provide a consistent interpretation of the philosophy of the Upaniṣads or, more formally, the canonical summary of the Upaniṣads, Bādarāyaņa’s Brahma Sūtra. Advaita is often translated as “non-dualism” though it literally means “non-secondness.” Although Śaṅkara is regarded as the promoter of Advaita Vedānta as a distinct school of Indian philosophy, the origins of this school predate Śaṅkara. The existence of an Advaita tradition is acknowledged by Śaṅkara in his commentaries. The names of Upanṣadic teachers such as Yajñavalkya, Uddalaka, and Bādarāyaņa, the author of the Brahma Sūtra, could be considered as representing the thoughts of early Advaita. The essential philosophy of Advaita is an idealist monism, and is considered to be presented first in the Upaniṣads and consolidated in the Brahma Sūtra by this tradition. According to Advaita metaphysics, Brahman-the ultimate, transcendent and immanent God of the latter Vedas-appears as the world because of its creative energy (māyā). The world has no separate existence apart from Brahman. The experiencing self (jīva) and the transcendental self of the Universe (ātman) are in reality identical (both are Brahman), though the individual self seems different as space within a container seems different from space as such. These cardinal doctrines are represented in the anonymous verse “brahma satyam jagan mithya; jīvo brahmaiva na aparah” (Brahman is alone True, and this world of plurality is an error; the individual self is not different from Brahman). Plurality is experienced because of error in judgments (mithya) and ignorance (avidya). Knowledge of Brahman removes these errors and causes liberation from the cycle of transmigration and worldly bondage.
