number 5 Ryder not bringing backup can be explained by Big Smoke or C.R.A.S.H. stalling him. Smoke, already working with the Ballas, could have deliberately delayed Ryder, convincing him to stay or giving him false information, preventing him from returning in time. Alternatively, C.R.A.S.H. could have interfered, using their influence to stop Ryder on his way back, further complicating his ability to help. This delay doesn’t indicate Ryder’s immediate betrayal but rather shows he was still in the middle of being manipulated. His eventual return to help CJ and Sweet in "Reuniting the Families" shows that he hadn’t fully betrayed them yet, with the true betrayal coming later in "The Green Sabre".
@AlexisStreamsКүн бұрын
number 4 Arguing that Ryder’s PCP use is a clear sign he would betray CJ doesn’t hold up when we consider Big Bear as an example. Bear, a former Grove Street member, was pressured into aligning with B-Dup and even got involved in drug use, but that doesn’t mean he betrayed CJ or the Grove Street family. In fact, Bear’s story shows that addiction and poor decisions don’t automatically lead to betrayal. Just like Bear eventually turned against B-Dup and sought help from CJ to get clean, Ryder’s drug use doesn’t automatically mean he was set to betray his friends. It reflects personal struggles and bad choices, but not necessarily a loss of loyalty. In Bear’s case, his relationship with CJ remained strong even after his struggles, showing that addiction and loyalty are separate issues. So, Ryder’s PCP use is more a reflection of his inner turmoil and reckless nature rather than an inevitable betrayal of CJ

number 3 The idea that Big Smoke and Ryder intentionally abandoned CJ and Sweet at the motel doesn’t seem to hold much weight when considering the broader context. One possible explanation is that Big Smoke and Ryder may have been trying to lead the police away from the motel, where Sweet was holding an important meeting with Grove Street members. Their actions during the mission could be seen as an attempt to create enough distraction for Sweet and CJ to stay safe. However, as the situation unfolded and their efforts to mislead the cops didn’t work as planned, they ultimately returned to rescue CJ and Sweet. If Big Smoke and Ryder had truly intended to betray them, they likely would have fabricated an excuse for their failure to come back, perhaps even suggesting they were stalling the police to allow CJ to rescue Sweet on his own. In real life, and even in films, we often see characters-such as law enforcement agents-joining criminal organizations to infiltrate them and take them down from within. So, while their initial actions may seem suspicious, it doesn’t necessarily indicate betrayal. Instead, it could have been part of a bigger plan that ultimately involved helping CJ and Sweet. Things like this can happen in high-stress situations, and their eventual return suggests they might have been playing a more complex role than it initially appeared.

I can think of why people (Myself included) believed Ryder wasn't meant to be a traitor, his betrayal was executed poorly, and prior to that, his missions revolve around benefiting the Grove, and he was very aggressive towards CJ for leaving Los Santos 5 years ago, same with Sweet. MC Eiht finished his role, so I guess Rockstar just screwed up the character, which is why the betrayal felt off, especially his death.
@The_Li0ness21 сағат бұрын
Ik right Rockstar should’ve done better with Ryder after MC Eiht was leaving Rockstar like in the same mission The Green Sabre when Ryder is involved shooting the Ballas with Sweet & Cj or he dies at the process when Cj kills him if it was the same mission as Ryder would betray you that would’ve been a better send off to his character instead of getting Ryder to work with the Loco Syndicate
@evil_resident916 сағат бұрын
It seems clear to me that the original idea was for Ryder to stay loyal and die in the Green Sabre mission which would have explained why CJ only acknowledges Big Smoke's betrayal during that mission's cutscene and why Ryder is never mentioned by Sweet or anyone else again after that point in the game. But Rockstar must have changed their minds when Mc Eiht had already finished to record his voicelines so they placed some of the Ryder's lines they already had in a way just so it would have made his character have a few shady dialogues just so his betrayal could have been more believable for the player and they also had CJ and Cesar's voice actors record a couple more dialogues where they acknowledge Ryder being a traitor.

Honestly, Kendyl alludes her discomfort of dating one of Sweet and Carl's friends in the mission Cesar Vialpando when Sweet is trying to deter her from going to see Cesar. She literally mentions after Sweet says before she walks away. "I'm just trying to protect you." "From What? So I can date one of your mindless friends? I don't think so." Before she walks away. I can explain that very easily. It wouldn't feel as satisfying if we had to kill T-Bone while in control of CJ when we only just got to know him and intended to blast him anyway, compared to Ryder who was with us a lot in the Los Santos Chapter only to find out in its finale he was a traitor all along. Killing Ryder ourselves instead of in a cutscene makes it feel more personal because you as the player was also betrayed by him.

38:47 I get your point, Pro. Many GTA fans (including myself) loved both Ryder and Big Smoke, because of how funny, memorable and unique were both of them in their own ways respectively. And I guess their betrayal was so painful for all of us to accept, to the point that it made us create our own alternative universes of GTA San Andreas which Ryder and Big Smoke never betrayed us, but some fans moved far away from the official timeline, that they decided to find an unintended excuse to think that Ryder in particular wasn't meant to betrayed us.
@twinberwolves423125 күн бұрын
For those that need a quick reminder, MC Eiht has a track in the game on the Radio Los Santos radio station and returns in GTA V with a track on the West Coast Classics radio station. Yup, Ryder was toxic the whole time CJ returned. Bro was envious and jealous of CJ from the very beginning and was always ripping on CJ and giving him a hard time upon his return. He clearly didn't respect the Johnson family if he (on the affirmation of Cesar) tried to get with Kendl and if that was the case, it would've been horrible. While this is only speculation, going off of Ryder's personality, I wouldn't put it pass him. On top of that, Ryder is an idiot as he ignorantly and blatantly nearly revealed part of what happened during the drive-by on the night of the murder and who it was. Bro wanted to rob a pizza place and it's bad when even they know who you are, and even then, the employees weren't even the slightest bit intimidated by him, just fed up with him, then a shotgun entered the equation and he bailed. (Also he used CJ's name too) Bro wanted to rob a colonel and the army, which while they benefit Grove Street, this had put both of them (mainly CJ) at risk. Bro is also addicted to PCP (or sherm) as well as it gives you a heightened or false sense of impulsivity, paranoia, reflexion, invincibility, irritability and instability, though to be fair this is probably Ryder on a day-to-day basis. (CJ calls Ryder a "Shermhead" on at least three accounts, I think). CJ on one occasion tries to appeal to Ryder on a human level and have a genuine conversation with him about his PCP addition but partially due to the effects of Ryder's addiction and his own ego trip he refuses to listen to reason, while disrespecting CJ on top of that. Ryder's fate would then be foreshadowed by CJ on that very dawn. "One day, you gonna really wish you hadn't pissed me off." Ryder carries the embodiment and holds the distinction of someone who is a narcissist, egocentric, toxic, cowardly, attention seeking, can't fill shoes too big, has a superiority-inferiority complex and a hypocrite all in one. Upon confrontation in "Pier 69", bro runs from CJ instead of handling business and his retort is "C-can't stop me!" like he thinks he's invincible and untouchable, sheer egoism.

I think most of these takes are overlooked. Ryder was added to the game very last second, which is why alot of characters don't interact with him. He was either supposed to be killed off in the fight during Green Sabre fighting for Grove, or eventually decided to join up with the rival gangs, not necessarily a traitor from the start (hence why he's a very reliable key member in helping the Grove) but eventually doing whatever it took to get his fix on, which is why he was originally shown a traitor during Photo Opportunity. He may or may not have been a traitor from the start when his character was in development, but he was always erratic, careless and paranoid. Him bailing on CJ and Sweet during Reuniting the Families is probably the most accurate take, though.

6:53 I don't think Ryder's dipping his blunt into PCP during that scene so much as extinguishing it in the ash tray we see earlier. You see him tucking it into his ear afterwards. I could be wrong as I know very little about PCP, but from what I can tell when weed is laced with PCP it needs to be dried first. This would likely be done long beforehand to either the weed going into the joint, or an entire unsmoked joint would be dipped then allowed to dry out. I don't know how flammable PCP is on it's own, but when he's making it and gets near the cook batch with his lit blunt CJ says 'Man don't do that! You'll sauté the both of us.' which implies that at least while it's being made it's highly flammable. If it is then dipping a lit blunt into it would have caused a fire at the very least and burned his supply, while he's fucking stupid an addict wouldn't endanger their stash in such a way.

@kingash9831 Smoke was the one who forced Ryder into the whole mess and even tied him up with drugs and others while holding him with threats and warning him about opening his mouth in front of CJ and Sweet Also if you think about the "buster" part then it was in jest and banter like friends do in real life. Also the Motel part I think it was Smoke who ran away while Ryder fitted the Ak on the roof remember? Also numerous times it was said that the character of Ryder was never taken seriously in the whole series Smoke was the one who trapped Ryder there and even in the Introduction Ryder wasn't keen on doing the betrayal there Also if you notice the dialogue of Pier 69 then Ryder's lines were limited and judging by those limited lines they were taken from either Catalyst or Robbing Uncle Sam mission Ryder was in some way similar to Lance but I don't think that Ryder ever wanted to betray the gang I only wish that the character of Ryder was surplus to them then they could have killed him in the gangwar instead of that messy sh*t Also Ryder was a coward like some guys are real life but he was never a traitor

When you deal with drugs, that's how you lead towards the wrong pack of friends you are surrounded with It's the same way, he could have probably stuck to his word multiple times But ended up doing his friends dirty Is it Ryder's fault entirely? In my gta verse, Ryder was more of a loyal Grove Street Families gangster. Ryder was a scumbag but he was as loyal to the gang set as Sweet and CJ. But the real Grove Street traitors Big Smoke and LB, plan to rid of the three anti drug gangsters of the set. Ryder was high on PCP and weed. And so his drug addiction would make him a liability from both the Johnson brothers and LB and Big Smoke. Also paranoia affects his mindset. All due to finding out that Big Smoke and LB are traitors and possibly the ones responsible for having the Ballas driving a green sabre and his drug use makes him look suspicious and some grove street families gangsters look at Ryder as the traitor. But when the Mulholland intersection shootout occurs, Ryder sees LB with the green sabre and would attempt to shoot CJ and Ryder. But Ryder saves CJ with bullets hitting Ryder himself and Ryder dying seeing CJ that he ain’t a busta.

So Ryder never died as a traitor. Instead he died as a martyr to CJ. Ryder was a conflicted OG. He was swayed by Big Smoke to sell crack but he was loyal to Sweet. So he was conflicted with both the OGs who have different agendas and so it contributed to his drug addiction. Oversmoking that sherm of his. Plus he was a loud mouth at times, that he wanted CJ to figure out that Big Smoke was going to betray Grove street for the crack empire. Ryder was no snitch. But wanted CJ and Sweet to put two and two together and discover Big Smokes a Judas. Despite how Ryder treated CJ like trash, it’s because he missed CJ many years ago. Of him running away after letting Brian die. So CJ would later return to LS and pickup Sweet to head towards his new mansion and Sweet calls CJ out. Saying that you’re disrespecting your late friend Ryder in keeping Grove Street clean. CJ decides to stay in Grove Street in memory of Ryder.

6:54 actually he’s not dipping his blunt in pcp if you notice it’s smoking at first and in ryders mouth then he puts the blunt out in the ashtray and then stores it in his ear to smoke the rest later. i can see why you thought he was dipping the blunt tho.

Great video, Professional! I think you're off though with number 2. I don't think there was anything sus with Ryder talking about the green sabre because he would've obviously heard stuff from people around the shooting (there's a grove member who witnesses it in the intro along with people outside of their houses along Grove) I don't think Ryder would've doubled down on talking about it after Smoke tried to hint to him the first time if that was the case. Even though Smoke was wanting the conversation to stop because it was making him nervous and uncomfortable, I saw it more as Ryder not wanting to keep talking about Sweet's mum's death in front of him. I always saw it as Ryder was getting groomed more and more by Smoke to betray/join up with him as time went on, especially because the intro is showing Smoke trying to persuade not only Ryder but Sweet as well to do things differently. Could just be me though, I always viewed the betrayal as just a build up of Smoke's manipulation, so around the start of the game Ryder wasn't completely gone yet.

This begs one question. Why didn't Sweet ask about Ryder after CJ picked him up from police station? He only mentioned Smoke. According to this Sweet doesn't even know that Ryder is dead

Great video on Ryder. Despite on what the community said that Ryder wasn’t going to be a traitor, I had suspicions that he always meant to be traitor. This video clears a lot of things up.
@CompositeCreativity20 сағат бұрын
The community ignorantly buys into all these baseless rumors about Rockstar and the actors having “issues” behind the scenes even in spite of the fact that multiple actors who’ve taken part in GTA games have denied them.

I feel that one reason that CJ doesn’t react as strongly to Ryder’s betrayal or say his name in the Green Sabre mission is because I think he was more genuinely shocked about Big Smoke being a traitor over Ryder. Ryder is a dick towards CJ in the story before this so deep down it didn’t really surprise CJ that much once he saw him there. I’m sure Ryder’s habits plus the way he treated CJ didn’t rub him the right way.
@jonnyg986516 сағат бұрын
Ryder wasn't supposed to be in the Green Sabre cut scene, only Smoke. That's why nothing is said about him. CJ wasn't supposed to discover Ryder's treachery until Photo Opportunity where he had plenty to say about him there. You'll also notice CJ is inexplicably yelling during this mission because it was originally supposed to take place in a helicopter. Things got moved around, but the dialogue remained the same which is why it's all off.

Ryder is a weird antagonist as he doesn't even say new lines I don't think he was supposed to be an antagonist as we were gonna play as Ryder like the switching of characters in GTA V but because they couldn't do that they decided to make Ryder an antagonist
@HeySlickThatsMeКүн бұрын
There's nothing to suggest that Ryder would've been a playable character The lines he says in Pier69 are "new", they're only rough because the mission had T-Bone and Ryder swapped late in dev so they couldn't record new lines for it and had to use what was already recorded for THIS mission

Amazing lore video as always. The points you mentioned really makes lot of sense to me and after watching this, no questionmarks left about ryder. Except one thing, in this whole smoke and ryder betrayal event, the green sabre attack on Johnsons house didn't make sense because if ryder and smoke was aware of what is going to happen, how ballas mistaken about sweets place? Sweet was only obstacle to whole drug empire plan after all. Only answer in my opinion is, as all we know smoke tried to change sweets mind about crack business at numereous occasions, it could be possible that Smoke didn’t tell crash about sweets actual place, so he could give his homie one more chance.

Ryder mentioning the Green Sabre wasn’t too out of place, there were probably witnesses on the street that saw the car, and that’s what Ryder probably also heard, but the fact he shuts up after Big Smoke talks him out of it and he immediately does is a red flag.
