Yes - he is doing a heavy Russian accent while speaking Norwegian. During the time this was made - a lot of Russian/Soviet subs were spotted in Norwegian waters. The Russians of course denied everything. So this skit plays of off that.

I am a Norwegian in my sixties. Harald Heide Steen was one of the best comedians we ever had, and I have have seen a lot of them. After decades he still make me laugh. "Can't see the border under water" Love it!

Yup. Harald was so talanted, an actor, comedian, singer, jazzmusician, recording artist, author, tv producer and he reccieved several awards. He had a great "ear" and could fake any language with the right tonality and phonectics. In animated movies as a voiceover he was fabulous and I still remember his fake arabic as a sheik in "Flåklypa Grand Prix, 1975. Brilliant man with a big, warm heart, so funny and I miss him! 😊

He was talking «gibberish» Just talking nothing but using sounds that in our ears will sound Russian, This phonetic thing was a huge part of Harald Heide Steen’s unique talent. He could make us believe that he could speak almost any language, by simply imitating the sounds of them. «Reisen til julestjernen» (The journey to the Christmas star) is a highly loved Christmas play, about the sad king who lost his beloved daughter, and in this play, they get reunited, real happy end. «Olsen banden» were originally a series of Danish crime-comedy movies, Harald Heide Steen took part in the Norwegian versions, mostly as «Dynamitt-Harry» An alcoholic self-taught «expert» on explosives... He could also show up in small roles, for instance as a taxi driver. But even then he made these characters real funny. We will never forget Harald Heide Steen

He's playing a Russian captain of a U boat, Harald Heide Steen was a brilliant Norwegian comedian. Russian submarines are regularly spotted spying along the coast in Scandinavia, so of course his spying was funnily explained away as fishing. Of course the reporter didn't believe that - from a submarine. Heide Steen to this day is still the best comedian in my eyes. Great to see this cut again.

Funny bits are the avoidance of the questions and legallity of them being there. And the referance of a "fishing song" 'når nettene blir lange' (word play: nettene = the nights/the nets) Musevisa is a norwegian christmas song, even used in Pippi Longstocking.

One of his talents was to speak any language, only rubbish of course, but it sounds great, and soooo funny. Passed away too early though... He was also the voice of a gorilla in Flåklypa grand prix, 1970's stop motion film, and it's the only voice not dubbed in other countries!

Harald Heide-Steen jr. was wery good at "black talk". Not a word needs to be correct. Not only russians got their language "reinvented" by this man, if you dont know the language you could beleave it was real. He was a wery dear comedian and phonetic artist. He is deeply missed.

@NordicReactions Reisen til julestjernen is a very good and dear movie in Norway, usually sent Christmas eve on television, and people gather to see it, even though they have did all their life... That movie made Hanne Krogh (later winner of Eurovision Song Contest in 1985) famous. Olsenbanden-movies - there are 14 movies, made from 1969 to 1984 - and then the last one in 1999 where all original actors actually has become of age... The main role actually lost one foot (amputated) not long after the movie finished, because of pains and so on... It was a REALLY hard role to do this last one... And one of the three men in the leading roles had died since the last movie...

Not sure if you got an explanation about this video. During the cold war Russian submarines were spotted in Norwegian water. So this sketch was based off of that;). Some of the text is missing, like what the guy is asking, but I guess the storyline still comes out. He speaks with a Russian accent and is obviously trying to distract the interviewer telling him about Norwegian beauty and language and so on 😂. Which Norwegians always loves, we love being mentioned because we are a small country😅 So yeah they were just there to fish from a huge submarine😂. This was from 1978 but things are not that different even today when it comes to the world.

During the Cold War, Soviet submarines were spotted in the Norwegian fjords, so it's quite close to realty. None were ever caught, so it was a game of cat and mouse. It's also a reference to S 363, which went aground outside Karlskrona in Sweden, on 27th of October 1981.

This guy is a norwegian famous actor. Here he is playing a soviet union submarine captain "lost" in norwegian ocean. And his "explanation" is that they are just fishing (not spying). Again - this is almost "impossible" to understand unless you have norwegian as your native language. Because only then will you understand his (really wrong) accent and all the norwegian references he is using. And he is using them all wrong.

That was absolutely deliberate - Norwegian is not my native language, but I have been in Norway since the mid 70s, of course I understood all the Norwegian references...and the ''all wrong'' was because he was pretending to be Russian whose knowledge of Norwegian was far from perfect!

Harald Heide Steen jr was a expert in improv comedy, as well as making mock accents. I'm fairly sure that the Russian is all fake, except for putting in some well known words like "da" and "njet" in order to make it seem authentic. He did several of these sketches together with Totto Osvold, the interviewer, and they were apparently unscripted. They just set up the situation, let Harald do his thing, and Totto Osvold just had to act like a real interviewer and keeping a straight face in front of Harald's crazyness. Incidentally, the matter of Soviet submarines in Scandinavian territorial waters is the subject of a Swedish series called "Whiskey on the Rocks" which is out these days. It is apparently made as a comedy (I haven't seen it yet), but based on the real event when a Soviet submarine ran aground outside a Swedish naval base in 1981.

I have seen several foreigners trying to analyze this video. It might be one of the best skits in norwegian history, at least for that time, but it is impossible to translate. The context and the culture is alpha & omega to understand it. The joke is on several levels, and after an hour of explaining it would still not be fun unless you have lived here. But a couple of good attempts is given above here. When Harald Heide-Steen jr. was young his family was visited several times by people from different contries, and he managed to pick up how they sounded. Maybe his interest for music made this possible. He wondered for a long time if he should be a musician. The song he is singing is a christmas song, and has nothing to do with fishing. Both the word "natt" and the word "nett" will in definite plural form become "nettene", hence he hasn't totally understood the song. But just a genius can make a skit this good, and I believe that a russian submarine captain would attemt the same explanations if he suddenly had to surface in the midst of Norway (Drøbak). He would sertainly not explain what trouble they had that made them gasp for air like that.

Like other people have pointed out it's from a period of time during the cold war when lots of Soviet submarine activity was reported in Nordic waters. There's a new series on Disney+ about a famous incident in Swedish waters which at the time all the world worried that could lead to a third world war - the series is called "Whiskey on the rocks". The submarine that was stranded in Sweden was a whiskey class submarine suspected of carrying nuclear war heads. The humor is making fun of poor Soviet attempts to explain away reasons to why their subs were spotted or even at one incident like in Sweden caught in Nordic waters. They were "comic Ali" before he was a thing in Bagdad...

Oh, that is a blast from the past...just as funny as when it was first shown...in the early 80's, when I hadn't been in Norway very long. But dialect has nothing whatsoever to do with that humour..it is standard ''Østlandske'' (around Oslo), and Harald Heide Stein was acting the part of Russian submarine captain who had learned that particular dialect...and he did it very cleverly. That was in the days when very few Norwegians realised that Russia was no friend, in spite of having been on the same side during WW2. They were rather naive in those days, even well-educated ones...thank the powers that be that that has changed....

....You CAN'T fish for ''lutefisk''...there is no such thing! Lutefisk is made from cod which has been preserved in caustic soda and semi-dried...and requires a great deal of time, effort, and water to make it safe to eat.... Most Norwegians love it at Christmas, but they need masses of bacon and white sauce, and beer with numerous ''chasers'' of Aquavit to make it swallowable...I never managed to swallow any; that is the one Norwegian tradition which my difestive system definitively declined....;
