I sometimes wonder whether it's a regional or cultural thing with people liking Serj. Vocally he's extremely talented, there's a plethora of vocalists and coaches on here that will attest to that. However his vocal style is heavily influenced by traditional Lebanese music with a lot of complex throat singing techniques. I'd imagine people are a lot more receptive to that style when they're used to hearing music from different regions of the world. I'd hazard a guess that their following is bigger in Europe than NA for that reason.

I won a contest back in 2014 to have lunch with Fred Durst when LB was coming through on tour. He is so 110% different than his persona in the band, he was extremely nice, soft-spoken, and friendly to everyone. Idk why he keeps lumping them in here. I feel nu-metal had a certain aesthetic and marketing, and Deftones, even Adrenaline, didn't seem to have the same type of vibe. And Around the Fur is far and away more of a artsy metal, with the only song that can be considered "rap rock" being the verses in Lhabia. And my third and final half-thought out argument, is that they have immense respect from band from all sorts of genres, none of which are nu-metal bands of today. I'm talking metal, pop, shoegaze, etc.
@Victorvonbass

If we compare it to like the big 4 of 90s Grunge, Deftones is like the Smashing Pumpkins. Not in the big 4 but had similar style as peers early on and kind of branched off later and did their own thing. I love both bands and they always do different styles and experiment a lot. The big 4 here for nu metal was very solid. I wouldn't change it either.

Korn is the godfather and "Metallica" of Nu-Metal period. They released 4 albums and were headlining arenas worldwide before Linking Park even came out. LP was only "nu-metal" for a short period of time, about 2-3 albums, then they turned into a pop group. As for the Big 4, Korn, Limp Bizkit & Deftones will forever be on my list. I tend to agree. Something he didn't mention was the fact that the Big 4 of thrash were close to the first 4 bands too, or at least the first 4 to get their own scene. Korn, Limp Bizkit and Deftones fits that to a tee. Linkin Park came around a bit after this and then left the scene not too far after. More like Pantera who briefly went thrash, did an amazing job of it, but then moved on to other stuff. I'd probably have Slipknot as the 4th. They predate the Hybrid Theory/Disturbed era that set the second wave of nu metal by a year and have probably stayed the most relevant of any other band.

They’re a band made up of Armenian Americans (first generations at that) and a lot of their ideas and styles are based on that identity (there’s a large community of Armenians in Los Angeles btw). SOAD is known in the state for their activism and support of that community as well. Hopefully this clears up some confusion.

I can see why some people are turned off by Serj's vocals, personally I love them but can see how some people think it's weird or unusual, but I think system of a down is a more socially motivated band then anything. All you got to look at is there top 5 songs. Chop Suey is about the morality of suicide, Toxicity is about the toxic nature of our culture, BYOB is about politics I will give you that, Aerials is about the perspective of life, and Lonely day is about feeling lonely. Obviously there lyrics are up for interpretation, but those are the most common interpretations of those songs. There is only 1 song out of there top 5 that is actually politicized and I think that's where they differ from RATM. Well RATM is mostly politized, System of a down is more socially conscience

i'm aware that i am biased because of SOAD being one of my all-time favorite bands, but Serj Tankian is EXTREMELY vocally talented. the main reason why certain people seem to not like his voice is because of how unique it is,, plus the bizarre ways he utilizes it during some of their songs. i definitely understand that his vocal style isn't for everybody, but you gotta at least give the guy mad respect for the pure talent and effort he pours out into his vocals. then you got the added bonus of Daron Malakian who is a BADASS guitarist and also an amazing vocalist with a voice which is very different from serj's voice, yet they go together so well somehow! (at least in my opinion) Edit: this won't necessarily be a "big 4" comparison, but my personal top 4 nu metal bands have gotta be Linkin Park, Korn, Slipknot, and System of a Down.

Great breakdown.Korn is one of my favorite bands of all time I seen them four times more than any other artist. And I think it's hard for people to comprehend then in the age of Britney Spears Backstreet Boys Christina Aguilera that Korn was a nu metal band and they were selling a shit ton of albums they were on TRL all the time. They had massive crowds. At my job I work with at least 10 people who were not even born when follow-the-leader came. And most of them were probably just born when Hybrid Theory came out. And you were right it's amazing how everybody dump them Limp Biscuit and tried to pretend they didn't never Rock Limp Bizkit back in the day and now all the sudden it's completely turned around. I've always loved System of a Down toxicity came out his amazing album still to this day and even later on with mesmerised. Korn is a fascinating part of the genre, as both the granddaddies of it yet also something unique to it. Speaking as someone who got way into them a few years back --- wayyyy after I got into other nu metal bands, yeah I know shame on me --- I can totally understand the reasoning for putting them as the "most underrated and least emulated" as far as the big names go. I was a little too young listen to, much less appreciate, their 1994 debut when it originally released, but I can totally imagine how the sound and emotion on that thing would have been such a mind-blower at the time that it became the hot new inspiration for so many other bands. But at the same time, that album was kind of lightning in a bottle that really no one can truly copy, not even Korn themselves. Listening to their discography after that, it's like there's a weird "fork" in the direction of nu metal from then on, with the bands inspired by them going one way by taking that sound and putting their own twists on it --- Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit adding more hip hop influences, Deftones going in a more chill/atmospheric direction, Mudvayne bringing a technical/prog flavor, SOAD foregoing personal lyrics in favor of greater social messages, etc. --- and Korn just continuing in their own direction without being steered by outside influences (the tune "Y'all Want a Single" started playing in my head thinking about this, lol). Korn continued to progress and evolve their sound over the years, yet as the albums progress it still felt like they existed parallel to the rest of the genre --- a close evolutionary cousin, but one that spent enough time separated by a narrow strait to become its own thing.

They'd call these the "Adidas bands". The big 4 always wore Adidas superstar shell toes as if they were endorsed. Great video once again ! I love your content ! I'm 30 now, and I come from a certain neighbourhood in which you could only listen to rap and hip-hop music. So when I started listening to music in the 90s I was a child and rap was all around. I had The Slim Shady LP and The chronic with me all the time and I was a big fan of those albums (yes they allowed me to listen to this when I was a child but I'm from Europe, nobody understood the lyrics really haha). So for me, Nu-Metal has been a gateway genre that allowed me to discover metal and rock music ! Somebody borrowed me Chocolate Starfish of Limp Bizkit once saying "you should listen to this", then I bought Hybrid Theory and that was it I never stopped listening to metal and rock since then. I think it shows how influential and popular this genre was at the time. They brought a big audience to rock, even people that were not used to listen to heavy stuff. It is something that rock seems to be unable to do nowadays.... For this reason, I still have a bit of nostalgia for this genre to this day and I mostly agree with what you say : Linkin Park, Korn, Limp Bizkit and Slipknot can be the big four of Nu-Metal. It truly amazes me how some bands like Limp Bizkit (and Linkin Park) became legends. At the time, hip-hop heads hated you for listening to this, and metal heads despised you for saying it was metal or even music ... now twenty years later they're gods... hahaha what comes around goes around huh ? Now if I may comment the video more directly : I think the reason Korn has less Spotify listeners is also because they kinda lost themselves a bit after Take a Look In The Mirror in 2003... they put out really bad albums for the past decades and I think it truly contributed to a certain decrease of their fan base that still hurts their statistics to this day. It is something that should be taken into account. As for Deftones and SOAD... well I disagree haha. I think Toxicity is a classic. And I am personally a big fan of Deftones. But I think everything you say about their fan base in your videos (all of them) are true. We are fucking stoners with no sense of humor haha we should recognise it ^^'

It blows my mind how Chevelle is never mentioned anywhere. Four Number One hits. Another 12 in the top 10. I'm not sure that they should be considered nu metal but, like...not even a mention for one of the biggest early 2000s Hard Rock bands? And it's not just you, they seem to be totally forgotten by everyone. It is just stunning how their existence seems scrubbed from the collective consciousness.

Chevelle was my favorite band for the longest time and I think cause they were more alt metal/hard Rock so they got lumped With like breaking Benjamin three days grace 30 seconds to Mars etc plus the overlap with nu metal with bands like deftones making music that could fit with both groups there were just other bands that got more popular so chevelle kinda got forgotten with the times which sucks cause they are one of the most consistent bands of their scene most of those bands have an album I don't listen to but I genuinely like all of chevelles albums they evolved yet stayed true to themselves at the same time

I had a friend who once described Chevelle as "the most popular generic hard rock band you never remember the name of" and I personally can't really disagree. They're not bad by any means and I like most of their popular songs but I'm never like "oh man I really wanna jam to some Chevelle", I just enjoy them when they pop up on my playlist and otherwise almost completely forget about them because in my view there's really not much about them that genuinely stands out.

Deftones pretty quickly developed their sound away from Nu Metal so it makes sense they're not on this list. It seems as well they have done a lot of work trying NOT to associate themselves with the Nu Metal genre in general as well and are now really trying to cross over into a lot of different scenes w the remix album and touring with rappers etc. Great vid man thanks!

I agree. Their first two records are really they only ones I would consider remotely nu metal, though it's really only the second one that I feel qualifies. Their debut is like something else entirely, but I suppose a case could be made for calling it nu metal.

Before this video, I thought of my own personal Big 4 of Nu Metal, and mine were exaclty the same. Linkin Park being the biggest and most succesful, Limp Bizkit with their insane popularity catapulted by Fred Durst's antics, Slipknot being the most heavy and maintaining their consistancy with their sound and image, and Korn pioneering the genre and while not having the most success as the rest, still remain the mst unique and infuential of the bunch. If I had it my way and if Chester was still with us, these 4 would be headlining the next DWP rock festival.

I grew up listening to my mom's 80s music until I discovered my local modern rock station when I was 12. I basically liked everything they played in the early 2000s. I respect Mustaine a lot for making his vocals work for the band. He's clearly not a good vocalist by regular standards, but his style suits to the music perfectly and with his vocals, drumming and riffs combined, they have put out some of the best albums in thrash. Otherwise list is perfect.

I first heard Korn's debut, probably in 1995, I was 13. It was a life changing album for me, it was SO HEAVY. I didn't understand why until later (7 string guitars). I purchased "Life is Peachy" the day it came out. So yeah, Korn is number one for me, they laid the blueprint for all nu-metal. LP wasn't nu-metal for very long. I would say after "Hybrid Theory", they were no longer nu-metal. A lot of the groove, which is the biggest thing for nu-metal, took a back seat to more polished and more melodic songs. "Breaking the Habit" is one of my favorite Linkin Park songs, and SO NOT nu-metal.
