One thing to note, on the play Mahomes got hurt the 'flick' was purely an attempt to get the defender to bite. Mahomes is past the los and he knew it. He has an uncanny ability to know exactly what it is and when he can use that flick play.

It's worth noting, plays like at 16:33, are actually discussed by Mahomes with his receivers. You can see during training camp and the regular season how he will coach them if they 'don't settle down between the zones' or 'come back to the ball.' His leadership is amazing. You can also tell when he has someone who listens vs someone who doesn't. Prime examples were Robinson a couple seasons ago and MVS at times this season. Mahomes would seem to throw bad balls at times, but then you'd see him pointing and talking to his receiver like 'yeah, stop your route there, don't run into coverage' type thing. It was very evident the AFC championship game they lost to the Bengals. Their entire OT drive was full of it. Robinson's man blitzed, so Robinson just needed to find the soft spot and immediately turn for the ball. Instead he runs himself into coverage (and Mahomes ball ends up being like two yards behind him). Second time, Mahomes almost throws an interception because Robinson doesn't come back to Mahomes on his in breaking route and instead he rounds it off

The genius of the play design at 17:30 is how the landmark for Toney to cut back off the motion, lines up exactly with Kelce. So effectively your big bodied TE acts as a kind of "screen" to hide the fact that Toney is cutting back to the outside. Not gonna be too many guys who can see through that while running at full speed to cross with the motion
@Jm-wt1fs Жыл бұрын
Yep combined w the slot receiver being the exact spot where the corner passes off coverage to the safety so the safety ends up sucked inside, and the corner can’t even see that Toney turned around bc big ass Kelce was blocking him from view. Not to mention fast twitch Toney going from full on sprint to stop and sprint the other direction in a fraction of a second

People love to say Mahomes always has open receivers and doesn't throw into tight windows (I am looking at you PFF).Many of these plays show that the reason they are open is because the timing, anticipation of Mahomes and his ability to manipulate defenders opens them up. WR run through coverage and are open in small windows. Throwing to them in that window is the most important skill. Being late on the read and having to drive it between 2 defenders doesn't make you the better QB (looking at you again PFF).

I think the thing about the play reviewed at around 15:50 is the Chiefs ran the same motion the play before. There is a much better angle of the hold on juju, it cost him at least 1 step, probably 2, and separation. because the defender is nowhere close if he doesn't use juju for leverage. and the ball lands very close, seemed like a timing route that juju would have been perfectly in position for if not held back earlier in play. great call even. it was subtle but game changing hold that some refs would be scared to call.

Warner explained the hold extremely well. The route design would have had Juju 1-2yrds open. Bradberry holding him not only slowed Juju but also kept Bradberry from being left in the dust and trying to force that ball would very likely lead to a pick 6 from personal experiences.
