Have you tried substituting unsweetened greek yoghurt instead of sour cream .. you'd be surprised and how similar they taste plus can use the yoghurt on breakfast too with some jam to sweeten if needed. And you only need to buy yoghurt once then it's easy to make at home ... Perfect budget pleaser.

@@jtrose6995 if you can find it in your store, (which means if you live in the southern part of the United States,) get a bag of white flour that is milled from "soft white wheat". At least, that's what I hear. Here in Michigan, my sister makes very good biscuits with all purpose flour. In theory, you aren't supposed to stir the dough around too much. You'll read sometimes a recipe will tell you not to "work" the dough too much. If you use butter, rub it into the dry ingredients. I believe there are KZbin videos about making biscuits to show you how to do this. This is NOT working the dough too much, because you haven't added any liquid to the flour yet. My sister even uses half whole wheat flour and half white flower, and oil instead of butter, with good results. I know there are some oil biscuit recipes online. Good luck. I have learned a lot about baking from KZbin videos.

$50 for 4 for a week is pretty awesome! For me, I don’t consider the lime and pepper luxury items-they add lots of flavor and nutrition. I do keep a large stock of canned green chilies in my pantry though. For me, luxury items would be heavy cream for my coffee, protein bars, bakery items, jerkey... I think we should all grab that pancake mix, it’s such a good deal!

You mentioned that the cabbage tasted really good with the Mexican foods and I wanted to add a comment about that. Many years ago, when fish tacos became popular in California, they were made with cabbage instead of lettuce, since they had hot fish and the lettuce apparently wilted and was not good. Since then, at home, we have used cabbage a lot with tacos. A popular family favorite resulting from a garden over growth is Veggie Tacos with shredded carrots and beets with ranch dressing topped with cabbage. They are yum.

Have you ever tried adding some cinnamon to vanilla yogurt? It takes it to the next level! Great over apples! I still have a fantastic [simple] recipe for baked rice and beans, which would have made use of everything you bought this week, if you'd be interested? I was hoping you could do a $1.50-$2.00 a day grocery challenge. I can’t help but think some people that might not have $10 for food. I know it would be a pain because it would be a daily food purchase, but think it would help lots of people.

Hi Tamra, thank you for the suggestion. It is true there are those that do not have $10 for food. Distance to the store and back each day, filming logistics, and currently virus issues where I'm trying to limit exposure to others in public sort of prohibit this from happening for me.

Maybe make your purchases all at one time but in different transactions. You could use any money left over for the next day/ transaction. Then edit your video of what you ate, the foods you introduced each day,and what you made. You are so health conscious with what the body needs. I think having to push the budget to the extreme would help a lot of people. I totally understand where you’re coming from with location. It's just usually chicken, onion, potato and sometimes a carrot and seasoned with salt, pepper and an herb here in Atlantic Canada known as summer savory. It's the savory that gives it the flavor. Then we usually add dumplings at the end. Simple ingredients but so delicious.

Hi Ana. The dish was very tasty. The only thing I would note here is that for some reason the sulfur smell from the eggs gets trapped in the potato dish. It's a chemical reaction of the ingredients. It's perfectly delicious though. XOXO

Amber, I was bad with budgeting when I was in college. So I could have used some financial prowess myself! I still sometimes just buy "whatever" at the store.

Great ideas! I would have done a simple frittata with the tomato and cabbage and peppers. How old are your kids? I have younger kids, not terribly picky but they have much simpler tastes.

I spent $400 on groceries yesterday and I have no idea what I bought! I go in the store without a list and frantically throw items in the cart like that game show SuperMarket Sweep.
@TheQuaintHousewife4 жыл бұрын
LNFFNL, I would have loved to have shopped with you. I enjoy the times when I can just go in and buy whatever I want. It's soothing and makes me feel like I've got abundance. BTW, I watched that game show in the 80s when I was a kid. Is it back on TV?
@ms.hotdoglegs6144 жыл бұрын
@@TheQuaintHousewife I do not know if it is on; I do not watch television. I was referring to the 80s version haha! I bought a lot of impulse items and quick meals for the kids. Then I got home and thought, "yikes! I did not buy any food!"

Nice ideas in this video! I am going to try vanilla yogurt and honey crisp apples with pancakes this morning! I purchased an air fryer last week and am also going to cook bacon using it to go with the pancakes. Love your videos!

William, tell me how you like the pancakes! It's really good when you dice the apples and throw them in the batter. Enjoy the bacon too :D

The Quaint Housewife well I had breakfast before my family and using vanilla Greek yogurt on the pancakes topped with cinnamon was delicious, plus the air fried bacon was a perfect addition along with the apples. My baby and wife are asleep but they get to wake up to a yummy breakfast!

Verdicts in, toddler loved it! I gave her one plain and one topped with vanilla Greek yogurt and cinnamon and though she ate both she gobbled up the one with yogurt first so thanks for this new idea in our kitchen as toddlers are picky eaters.

Nicole, I agree. That is a stock up price!
@paulrward4 жыл бұрын
I hope you saved all the chicken bones to make stock - that is a big money saver when it comes time to improving the nutrition and flavor of all of your dishes. For example, the White Chicken Chili can be improved by adding stock when cooking the beans. In the future, you might want to price whole chickens, ( usually about $ .90 a pound, and then break them up yourself. If you get four chickens, you get eight boneless breasts, eight wings, eight thighs, eight drumstick, and eight tenders, plus the bones and wingtips for stock, and if they have the heart, gizzard, and tails, they go in the stockpot too. Avoid bags of drumsticks, they have the lowest meat to bone ratio of any part of the chicken, making it a VERY expensive way to buy chicken. As for the chicken stock - you can make a large pot of chicken vegetable soup for dinner, with corn bread muffins or home made bread, sliced thick and covered with butter and dried salad herbs. Another money saver is sometimes WalMart has three pound packages of Bacon Ends and Pieces - usually for about $7.00 to $ 8;.00 . You can pull out the nicer strips to fry with your eggs ( that was a KILLER buy - 60 eggs for four dollars! ), and the rest of the pieces can be chopped up and fried slowly to use as garnish on salads or on your potato bake dish. The cost sounds high, but if you carefully reserve the bacon fat, and keep it in your refrigerator, you can use it instead of cooking oil or shortening on most recipes. When you saute your onions and garlic in bacon fat, it adds an additional layer of flavor to the dish. One other item I thought of: With all those eggs, and that chicken, you could have had a supper of Chicken-Pinto Bean - Cabbage Omelets, with shredded chedder cheese on top. With a little hot sauce, they would be like huevos rancheros. You might also want to look into bulk packages of Powdered Milk, it can be less expensive then fresh, keeps well on the shelf, and, while not so tasty as fresh milk when drunk as a beverage, it works very well for cooking and baking. You can also add a bit of butter to it, and a teaspoon of Vinegar, and turn it into Sour Cream, excellent for cooking and baking. Keep Saving ! As my grandfather used to say, " Mind your Pennies, and your Dollars will Mind Themselves..."

Great job and I really like the meal ideas for a family. I am a single widow, so it was a lot more food than I needed for the week, but all adaptable. I remember from one of your other videos that you said you really enjoy the shopping, as well as the meal prep. I like watching as you make you choices and find your meals really a step above a lot regarding nutrition. With this $50 amount, you may be able to do a dessert. My mom made rice or bread pudding for us. Do you and your family like oats? Because they are really cheap and have a good nutrient profile, too. I have read these overnight oat recipes, and they sound pretty good. What do you think of them? What I try for breakfast are a special menu on Sunday, two days of eggs, two days of oat cereal, and two days of yogurt power bows. Did not mean to ramble. Have a good week.
@TheQuaintHousewife4 жыл бұрын
Barbara, you are not rambling at all. I do like oats as well as rice dishes. Thank you for the comment about nutrition. I do try. I think your rotating breakfast is smart in terms of nutrition and variety as well. God bless!

I think it was smart to increase the challenge to $50. More realistic due to food price increases as well as helping contribute to flavoring ingredients like the cheese, apples, and yogurt to make the meals more nutritious and satifying. I love these videos!

"Weis" Store brand Macaroni & Cheese 7.25 oz box costs only .29 (everyday) when U buy 6 or more boxes. 69 cents when U buy 5 or less boxes. I add a few extra ounces of shredded cheddar (&/or Monterey Jack) to the packet included + 1/2 stick of butter and a 1/4 cup of milk (+ sour cream & chile powder). While the pasta is boiling brown & drain 1/2 lb. ground beef. Add a few tbsp. salsa. The meal for 2 people cost less than $1.00 each. It's cheap, delicious and has a long shelf life for prepping. First time here - Love your channel - Subbed!

You get such perfectly round tortillas! Mine always come out wonky. Those 60 count eggs cause me trouble. The Walmart in our old town has them for less than $3 all the time, but the Walmart in the smaller town we moved to, prices them between $12-17! They are a major staple for us, I usually buy 3 boxes a month. I never imagined I’d be driving to the city for eggs, but at that savings, I don’t have a choice. All of the meals looked good. I would make eggs with potatoes. It’s a family favorite:
@TheQuaintHousewife4 жыл бұрын
Oh Phylicia, most of my tortillas are not so round! I try to only put the best examples on camera for the purposes of presentation. That is an amazing variation in price for those 60-count eggs! I would not have believed it if you didn't say it. XOXO
