Yea and they got the character all wrong. Akasha in the book is not overly sexualized. She was one of the first Vampires but more importantly she was a Queen and that is how she acted. In the film she was protrayed more like a slut then like a Queen. Queen of the Damned is my second favorite book next to the The Vampire Lestat. I didn't even make it 20 min in to the film before I walked out it was so bad. They didn't even try to stick to the books or get any of the characters right.

She just exudes power, an unfathomable depth of charisma and power. You would think every young vampire in the bar would have practically collapsed just from her presence. Not to mention her outfit just screams royalty and authority in any time period. Its not everyday a 6000+ year old original vampire shows up. They all would have been on their knees. Also I have to say that Aaliyah was absolutely beautiful, she was perfect for that role! Too bad her life was cut short.

I remember when her casting for the movie was first announced, a lot of people were not happy about it. More than a few people had the attitude of, "WTF? Why are they putting some Rnb/pop star in the role of Akasha, that's never gonna work" (paraphrased). And then this scene happened and a lot of those same people immediately went, "Goddamn, this scene is awesome, she has nailed this character, she's the best part of the entire movie." So basically she walked into this bar and shut everyone up. It was awesome to see when it first came out, especially considering without Aliyah as Akasha this movie probably would've bombed completely & not become the cult classic it eventually did.

She walks and moves like a predator. She sees every soul there, because when each pup accepted their dark gift, they essentially sold their souls to Akasha. She sees vampires the same way that she sees humans, as cattle and play things which isn't surprising considering how ignorant most vampires are of their heritage according to the story. The main problem with this is that unlike nowadays, where they take a big book, such as "Dune", and split it into two movies, they went in the opposite direction and blended "The Vampire Lestat" and "Queen of the Damned" into one movie, with many of the scenes that would have provided better continuity ending up on the cutting room floor. And the part I didn't like is how they changed Lestat's origin story. Perhaps AMC will correct these errors, since they seemed to have done well with their revise "Interview with the Vampire" series.

It is much deeper than that! She sees every soul there, because when each pup accepted their dark gift, they essentially sold their souls to Akasha. She sees vampires the same way that she sees humans, as cattle and play things which isn't surprising considering how ignorant most vampires are of their heritage according to the story. It is a good lesson of accepting power and influence, because it always comes with a cost, and most usually don't care what the cost is until it is too late!

I don't know what the heck happened with movie making nowadays, but I'm glad we can look back and watch these movies from back in the day. I miss Aaliyah she was definitely one of a kind and her star was rising both in music and in film.

@@Nisselak she’s scary for sure but honestly is there a specific or even logical reason about why that character doesn’t wear many clothes in her ?
@psychedelicpegasus7587 Жыл бұрын
@@rafaelarcas942 She has been asleep/dormant for thousands of years. The clothes she is wearing are in a style reminiscent of her time and are more ceremonial than practical as she has basically been a living statue up until her awakening. She was queen of Khemet, which later became Egypt. In a warmer climate and as a royal this kind of clothing isn't too bizarre (although I won't say it's historically accurate). As a vampire she isn't affected by temperature, and as queen of the damned she can wear whatever she likes. I highly recommend the Vampire Chronicles books by Anne Rice.

think Bram Stoker's Dracula was where the whole "sexually alluring" thing came from with vampires, so blame him. I do agree that it would be nice getting a movie with vampires simply being immortal blood thirsty monsters and getting rid of the whole sexual aspect. Wouldn't sell as well, but it still would be nice to get a strictly monster movie type of Vampire movie.

Despite Akasha in the books being the color of alabaster, whenever I re-read Queen of the Damned I vividly visualize Akasha as she is in the movie. The movie had major problems, but Aaliyah knocked it out of the park and I'm grateful they didn't whitewash her even if it would technically be more book accurate. Intoxicatingly beautiful, aloof and terrifying, that's Akasha's thing, and Aaliyah nailed it. Her costume is also immaculate and spectacular to look at, and I especially appreciate the headdress she wears. It's a reference to how Marius dressed Akasha during her time in Christian Rome and Venice. She wore a veil and crown back then that evoked the image of the Virgin Mary's halo.
@björkmou5e Жыл бұрын
@@zoiksgoiks7901 I think the reason for that is that the movie is simply too short to delve into Akasha’s multi-millennia history is an ancient pre-Egyptian Khemeti tribeswoman so it was simpler to show her with a North African skin tone than talk about it in a painfully short exposition dump. This movie would be Lord of the Rings length if they stuck to the book. Would love to see it redone in full detail. The book is 600 pages and half that is Akasha’s history as a North African tyrant.

I remember being like 11 and seeing this and thinking... I want to be her! Obviously, not murdering people but her gravity when she walked into the room was undeniable, and I loved seeing a woman be captivating like that - not just in a sexual way but she intimidated everyone. Honestly Korn killed it with the music too. I don't think any actress would have pulled this role off as good as Aahlyia which is crazy because she wasn't really an actress.
