In this review of the Maschine Mikro mk3 I did a comparison between the pad sensitivity of the original Maschine mk3 versus the new mikro mk3. I hope it's helpful!

Thanks for your review!! This also confirms the answer I got from their helpdesk inquiring about the difference of the pads between the mikro and the full version. Although the pads themselves are exactly the same, the sensitivity is not! The employee explained the difference like this: the full version has “hyper sensitivity” and the mikro has “super sensitivity”. So for maximum responsiveness and best performance playing lower velocities the Full MK3 is your best friend!

The Quest for Groove Yes it does make sense. Although I really hoped the mikro would’ve had the same sensitivity hahah. Then it would be an instant buy for me! But I guess the majority wont notice any difference anyway. The employee even didnt notice a difference. But he hadnt tested it with orchestral percussion, so after some asking around and digging he found the little difference in sensitivity specs. But I was still very curious how much of a difference it would be in practice. Thanks to your review I got the answer!

@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 4 жыл бұрын
My main advice for a 4x4 is the maschine mikro mk3. It has received some updates over the years and is now very close to the big mk3. Not 100% as sensitive, but it's truly not worth paying 2,5 times as much for that extra 10% sensitivity that will also decline as you have hit the pads a million times.

I think you can using the maschine software. But, with the full size machine mk3 you can actually plug external synths into the maschine directly since it has a built in audio interface and audio inputs and outputs. You still need the software but it makes it nice and convenient. And external software synths could be controlled with de device in midi mode. That's what I do. But the problem is that the mikro mk3 has no midi mode yet. It will be added in the near future.

From my experience the mikro has a little bit of double triggering sometimes, which I found only to be problematic when there was some sort of fixed velocity. The double triggers were very very soft but obviously with fixed velocity this does not matter so it will be annoying. The big mk3, both devices that I own do not have any double triggers at all.

The Quest for Groove ah, that's make sense now. One interesting thing - you mentioned that Mikro trigger double notes sometimes on max sensetivity, perhaps it is somehow related to its lower sensitivity overall, because the resonance of the smaller enclosure (since it has a smaller mass) can lead to false triggering. Maybe it was one of the reasons why NI lowered sensitivity threshold. Something similar was on the MPD218 - if you put it on a hard surface, the resonance of the case could cause false triggering. By the way, did you try other Mikro MK3's?
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting! If that's the case all small and light controllers will suffer from this when they have to be very sensitive... curious if the atom will have something similar then. I have not tried other mikros. But the pads seem to be very even in sensitivity. Doesn't seem to be a matter of one 'bad' pad. Which happens a lot with the akai mpd218.

Is it possible that there are slight variations between one Maschine and another? Whether it's a micro Mk3 or a full size Mk3, I doubt the hardware is any different simply from the stand-point of cost & efficiency. At 1:21 you said other people disagreed with your conclusion, it's possible you're both right if there are slight differences from one Maschine to another.
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 4 жыл бұрын
Small differences between devices are possible for sure. However, there's something about the mass and weight of the big maschine that make it a slightly different device, especially when accidental triggering is involved. I actually did hear from users who emailed NI customer service that even NI says there is a small difference in sensitivity between the big mk3 and the mikro. That said, my big mk3 that's 2 years old already has some wear and tear and probably isn't much better than a brand new mikro right now...

While I respect your review/video. I have to question this. You obviously have an issue with the pads, however I dont think you realize that you've been using the MK3 for a year and the Mikro MK3 is brand new so the pads will obviously be "looser" on the MK3 than the Mikro. I have the Machine Studio and the Mikro MK3 and after a couple weeks, the pads are near identical.
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this insight! All I know is that my initial out of the box experience with the large mk3 was that the pads were insanely good in terms of sensitivity. I could play all my stuff in a very subtle way with all the pads triggering always. The mikro did not give me that same experience. Obviously it could be that the mikro needs loosening up and the large one does not. But what also might be the case is: the mikro mk3 in maschine software automatically shifts to a less extreme sensitivity level when you switch from the big mk3. So if you leave the software on that sensitivity level when plugging the big one in it might feel the same because on that setting both device are the same. Switch to ultra sensitive and the mikro will start triggering double notes and feel a little less responsive than the big one.

I think I used a different curve for the kicks then I had for the rest of the kit. Where the kicks sound louder when you hit them softly. But that's basically it. It is true that the pads will wear down over the years so that might be an issue! Also... there could still be better and worse specimens out there. I haven't played them all. My guess is there are more sensitive white pad kontrols out there than black ones. But all of that said... the newer maschine mk3 devices and especially launchpad pro mk3 that I just bought blow the pad kontrol out of the water.

Thanks a lot for the tip, although I wouldn't recommend the XJam at all

Ah thanks for letting me know! The problem with all of these units is that there are always bad ones out there. I had some people be very unhappy with their maschine mikro as well. So I'm trying to figure out if there's a good chance you get. a good unit. With the micro that seems to be the case. With the Jam it is still not clear how many people get good units and how many get bad ones. I might have to order another unit (or two) and see how those respond.
@PM-yz8fx
@PM-yz8fx Жыл бұрын
@@TheQuestforGroove I agree, quality control is a big issue with pads based units, go figure out why. Regarding the Xjam though, at least for me, there is no comparison, currently in the UK the Xjam costs £129 ($160) and the Mikro is £189 ($235). The Xjam is very small and the software is very limited, nothing that you can't get nearly for free everywhere these days. The built is not terrible, assuming that the pads respond well, it's very portable and compact and the fact that it has midi out and pedal out and it's a midi controller is great, the customisation is stellar as well. But I have to say, the Mikro is a completely different experience, the unit is more solid, the pads are larger and are completely illuminated, it feels more durable too, it's still portable and customisable, although the fact that it doesn't have a midi out annoys the hell out of me, without talking about the registration part and the dependency to Native Access grrrrr. But then, what you can do with the Maschine software is great and there is a lot of sounds available and a lot of functions with the Maschine environment which I can't ignore. But I see why somebody that just needs a good and portable sensitive pad controller would go for the Xjam. It's just that difference in price between the two is pretty small and what you get with the Mikro seems a lot more. However in the end you are perfectly right, what counts is how good and sensitive the pads are, a Mikro or an Xjam without good and sensitive pads is absolutely useless for somebody that wants to enter the world of finger percussions. Thanks again for your informative videos, without that I would still trying to buy the right unit, now with the Mikro I realised how much fun I have been missing for years, without your videos I never considered percussions with fingers ever, so yeah you do inspiring stuff!

Im sorry, but why do you always seem to talk about trigger pad sensitivity not about velocity sensitivity? I guess one follows the other to your mind? I d much rather see a demo with a simple hit hat pattern with accents and comment on the best sensitivity in that manner. Im drumming on keys atm and i dont see why everyone is so down on them since the pads on my AKAI max 49 for example have terrible trigger sensitivity against which keys are infinitely more tactile. Problem is that semi weighted keys put lots of strain on my lower back after couple hours of use and that neither pads nor keys on AKAI max 49 have much of a velocity sensitivity so im considering moving to a thing like mikro mk3 or atom. Can you comment on that decision in view of what i just said? thanx!

I sort of mix those two up :-) the trigger sensitivity is important to get those soft notes in but the velocity is also important to get nice dynamics. Velocity curves from soft to loud are an interaction between the controller and the software. Usually you can alter the velocity curve in your software a bit to compensate for the curve of your controller. Up until now, all pad controllers that triggered well when touched softly had good velocity curves after some tweaking in addictive drums!

You want great pads, get an MPC! My 2000XL and LIVE pads are pure luxury! I also use Maschine MK2 and Mikro MK3, but not a big fan of NI pads...they do the job. Akai pads just feel better!

Yeah I hear people say that regularly. A friend of the channel is actually letting me borrow his MPC live. So I can finally do a battle of the titans soon between the mk3 and a premium mpc. :-)

Yes in terms of shape and size they're exactly the same. But the way the controller deals with loud and soft hits is a little different. Not much but the difference is there. That said, this video is pretty old and in the meantime the mikro got some firmware upgrades that makes the difference between the two even smaller. I recommend the mikro over the big mk3 right now because i's not worth paying double the price for that tiny bit extra sensitivity and dynamic range for most people. If money or size does not matter, the big mk3 is still a mini bit "better" though.

@@TheQuestforGroove cool. Yeah. Agreed and good points. I got the mikro as I'm new to it all (production as opposed to dj stuff) and so felt it to be a great cheaper entry point and proved to be so, got it for £165 and I think it's amazing value for a fantastic superb quality device and to pay hundreds more for the full device couldn't be justified at that point

I would call playing like a fairy "the only way to get full dynamic range out of your pad controller". I like soft hits as much as loud hits but I use them all! :-) You need the soft notes in order to play realistic drums. I do think the mikro got even better after recent firmware updates by the way. It's my #1 budget controller at the moment!

I'm a guitarist too, originally :-) I would at least try to see how much force is actually needed to reach max velocity level. If you hit a lot harder than that, you have to be a bit careful for your hands and wrists. I did a video about that in my beginner course. Finger drumming doesnt make you tired, and because of that you can just keep banging your hands on a pretty hard surface for hours on end. That's something to be careful with. Especially since you're also a guitar player... be sweet to yours hands! :-)
