The song is close to Diana's heart and means a lot to her personally. She now performs this a capella at her live concerts, usually starting in total darkness then the spotlight picks her out! "Oh yes you are a child, my little child - why are you sitting and not smiling" "Our yard is full of horses and the living room is full of guests" "Oh, my friends, my darlings, oh yes, I have nothing to rejoice at and nothing to smile about." "I have no father or mother, no one to bless me ..." "You are a river. My dear river. You flow and do not splash." *THE STORY* "A young orphan girl is being given away in marriage to the unloved. She goes to the river (a portal between the living and dead) to ask her dead mothers’ blessings for a marriage that will not be a happy one. The spooky voice is her dead mum answering back! The mood of the song changes and we hear her young girlfriends in the yard playing and laughing, asking why the girl is so sad? Then she cries uncontrollably. в одном из комментариев правильно сказали - для средневекого русского крестьянина, точнее крестьянки, свадьба это не то, что она есть для нас, современных русских. Это было то, что этнографы называют обрядом перехода. Для 15-19 веков это именно был переход молодой девушки к иной жизни - от маменьки с тятенькой (вообще семьи) к новой жизни, где на мужнюю жена наваливались многие заботы и труд. Любые такие переходы (рождение, брак, смерть) в традиционных обществах обставлялись обрядами. На Руси их частью были песни, причем для брака - именно что печальные, "жалельные". Девушку перед свадьбой подружки прямо таки "отпевали". "Реченька" поэтому тоже относится к этому разряду - но так сказать с обременением, т.е. с фактом сиротства лирической героини (тоже частый мотив)

This competition is called "You Are Super" and is specifically for disadvantaged children who did not grow up with one or both blood parents. Her adoptive mother entered her. The song "Rechenka" (river or little river) is a Russian folk song. The river is the boundary between the living and dead. She is an orphan about to be given away into a marriage she is dreading and goes to the river to seek her dead mother's blessing. As you know, Diana was an orphan, so it has a special meaning. Diana won that season of "You Are Super"...and was invited to participate the following year in the all star season for prior winners...she won that season also! As you've probably read from other comments, she is a dramatic contralto and really becomes part of the song! So she won the two seasons at ages 14 and 15. She was only 14 when she sang this song. Perfect song, perfect voice, perfect artist! When she won this first season, the older gentleman judge, Igor Krutoy, is a famous composer/producer/billionaire in Russia who also promotes/produces Dimash's performances. Igor gave Diana an apartment in Moscow so she and her family didn't have to take a 12 hour train to get there each time and so she could get into local schools and university nearby to further her artistic development. Why does it annoy everyone that the jury members do not react immediately!? This annual contest "You are super" is unique, there is no similar analogue abroad. It is attended by children left without parental care or who have fallen into difficult life circumstances. She ran away with the competition, they all knew what she could do. Krutoy is the composer and pianist for Dimash, another of your favorites. Боюсь показаться некорректным, но когда ставят рядом Диану и Димаша, упускают важную вещь. Безусловно, они очень талантливы, но все знают, кто такие родители Димаша, и хвала им за это - создали все условия для развития мальчика, как он сам неоднократно говорил в интервью. Broadway sucks. Performers on Broadway are hokey, lifeless, soulless, sanitized, desperate clowns. The most “seasoned” broadway “star” couldn’t pull off what 14 year old Diana does in the performance in their lifetime.

Loved your reaction! I do recommend “Blizzard” from “You are Super”. I never get tired of listening to her and this was when she was 15. To pronounce correctly and it took me a while too is pronounced DeeAnna Ank coo DEEN ova. Just practice stressing the DEEN. Also listening to her name being mentioned in some of her performances really helps. Getting there. Pretty much anything she sings is remarkable and goosebump producing. its the show where the musicians start with their back to the singer and hit and button and turn around if they like the vocalist European version of "the voice" i believe its called. AND if memory serves this is an verison of the song by HIM in her own language. Shes super super talented!!!

In this show, they don't turn around, they are already facing toward contestants. and this show is no "voice". This is "ty super/you super" where contestants are mostly orphan, or those whose own parents have discarded them. There is a "voice children/golos deti" russian version which is seperate from this show. But I believe "voice" is corrupted in russia. Diana did take part in that show when she was 13, but the jurys couldn't understand her talent and the technique involved in yodelling. So, they made an excuse that they couldn't teach her and regretted their decision of not selecting her. Also, in this "you super" show, she won both 2nd and 3rd seasons when she was 14 and 15 years old.

@@nickgillingham5575 nah trust me they already have "voice" show different from this show which has red colored set with mic as a logo. This show has nothing to do with "voice" show. Although the stage may seem somewhat similar!! Golos is the russian term for voice and in russian, the show name is "golos deti ( golos=voice deti=children).
