Thanks so much for your time it’s takes to do the video on the MD1. I have one in a Texas Ranger FD1. DK at 1.5 watts. The MD1 is always on as you installed. My setup was done by the man you developed the MD1 about 10 years ago. I have always gotten good reports with the radio. I have always viewed the negative feedback videos about the product. This was the first unbiased review on KZbin that I have viewed.

You are welcome! It was totally unbiased because weather it worked or not makes no difference to me. It's not something I'm trying to sell. Just wanted to do a review to see if it does what it claims and so no one wastes money on a product if it doesn't work. You have a pretty good demo here, I have many radios that I have modded to get 200%, even 300%+ and still have a clean signal.. Many "experts" say it can't be done, but yes it can.. But you have to remember to let people know, that all that modulation, even if it is clean, can overload many receivers and make you sound bad to the person on the receiving end. If you have a radio with "Big Modulation" and someone says you sound muffled, you might want to ask them to turn off their noise blanker also.

Watching here in England, enjoy a good technical video, but you made it look easy. Would send you my busted radio's, but I think i would be better off buying 1 off you, AM/FM(UK40)/Ssb and variable wattage, sounds good to me.

It would be interesting to see a comparison of a "import" vs something like a icom 7300 on 10m on the scope,SA and so on. Stock form first, then tuned.

Thanks for taking the time to give it a watch. This mod is pretty much all like all cb mods ,when done correctly it works well. If just thrown in there as quick as possible and tuned with a watt meter it's going to decrease your performance. Have a great weekend 73!

As for doing this in a grant xl, no it's not needed because there is a different mod that I do with those to get over 100% mod clean! 😀 That's why I love the 148, grant xl chassis. Great Video! Big fan! After viewing I ordered a MD-1 and it arrived today. The only thing about the video is that I'm curious about is the use of the "BWL" (Bandwidth Limiter) on the scope. (It's the little green light to the right of the display.) All the earlier scope shots show that the BWL is enabled (Limited BW) but for the finale shot (@12:17) it's turned off, allowing the signal to be viewed using the full bandwidth of the scope. To have an "apples to apples" comparison none of the scope settings should be changed in my opinion.

Yes later in the video you can see me hit the bwl button to turn it off so that the reference signal fit into 2/div better. Sometimes I have it on or off to make the signal fit into a certain amount of divisions, it makes no difference because I show the reference carrier first. I get what your saying though and I will be mindful of that in the future. Thanks for watching 👍

@@TheRadioGarage Hi there. Thanks for your "thumbs up". After giving it further thought, the BWL of the scope should have no effect on viewing the envelope of the carrier but we both agree that it's best not to change the settings when making comparisons. Another thought, if you don't mind. Test started at RF Power "A" and the carrier and modulation was measured, then the MD-1 is installed and was flat-topped. Sounds like the audio section just couldn't keep up. To get a clean output the radio carrier power was reduced to level "B". Just for the sake of really keeping the playing field level, I'll like to see the performance of the STOCK radio at RF power "B" and then make the comparison with the MD-1 installed. If the MD-1 really works we should readily see that in that test. I know that shorting the grey wires disables the MD-1 and that may be one way to do it but returning the radio to stock would be best. BTW, I look forward to your videos. They are very well made and informative. Keep up the good work!

I am curious what the signal would have looked like if you would have kept the 8w carrier and dropped the modulation until the wave came into form; and if it would have also been over 100%. Then, since the low carrier VR and the low modulation VR can be adjusted separately, make the low setting the 2.5w/35w/200% modulation.

My radio seems to do this already without any modifications. Peak power stays at 25watts no matter where i set the carrier power. So i now key 1/2 watt, swing 25. After putting that through a driver and final rf amp, my station keys 150 watts, and swings 2000.

They don’t need one, they have plenty of swing and tons of modulation. All they need is clean and simple peak and tune.

@@hazmathauler4536 yes but you can’t dial the carrier back and still swing full output. The limiting circuit jerks the swing and top end watts back like a dog on a choke chain. Basically if you dial the variable power down anymore than about half throttle you will not get peak output on the top end. I run tubes,i want to be able to put a 1/2-2w carrier in to what ever modulator/baby driver I have in the chain and still swing the max I’ve got the radio set for into it.

This is why Broadcast AM stations have compressors. This is also why AM and FM Radio have a consistent level yet TV stations do not. Not a real secret, but the trade off is if you are in a truck with a lot noise, that get's picked up as well. Small trade off since modern trucks are not noisy in the cab
