Maybe you know this one already but If your HP3314A is old enough it might have the Handel's Messiah Easter Egg buried in the firmware. From power OFF, push and hold the "SW/TR INTVL + START / FREQ + blue function key" then turn ON the power and continue to hold those buttons until you see the seven segment led flashing register address locations - then let go of the buttons. When it's done loading memory it will start playing Handel's Messiah in it's entirety. PS. you'll need to connect a speaker to the function output jack to hear the music! Back in the 80's, a good friend of mine worked for HP and knew the Engineer that worked on this function generator. As the story goes, HP's test equipment product development model gave the Engineer a crazy long time to develop the instrument. Usually takes about 10 months to get to a production ready instrument, then they get a couple of "extra" years to over Engineer the product which is why their test equipment is so good and lasts so long! The Engineer for the 3314A had finished way ahead of schedule and finding himself with lots of time on his hands decided to hide this musical effort into the ROM code. It took many years before his supervisor discover what was done and they subsequently removed that Easter Egg from the firmware. HP Party poopers!! enjoy...

You must mean it plays the Hallelujah chorus in its entirety. The entire work, Handel's Messiah, is about 2.5 hours long. Very cool bit of trivia though. now I want to hear it do it 😃
I just know you had a happy childhood Mark, I can tell by your brilliant happy smiley face :)

Wonderful and inspiring, Mark! Maybe you could also do a video on how you grew your skills - I'm guessing at least an apprenticeship? I've been teaching electronic engineering over 30 years and my main aim is to inspire and grow confidence in my students. I wish I could have seen your excellent videos back then! Thank you so much😊

I love this stuff. I should have gotten deeper into electronics when I was going through high school and pursued an EE degree. What amazes me is how people that have these sort of labs afford what seems to be hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment along with the expertise to work all of it. It's beyond fascinating.

I’m glad I found your channel Mr. Mark. I’m from the US and I was in the Army in the early 90’s ( Gulf War Era ) and was trained as a Radio Repairer ( 29Echo ) Sadly I really only learned how to fix the equipment we were currently using, I’ve forgotten a lot. Watching your videos and others I follow remind me of just how much I’ve forgotten when it comes to bench testing and all that entails. You’ve definitely earned my subscription.

Such an awesome channel! Your enthusiasm really rubs off and watching you work on projects is both educational and weirdly relaxing 😄 My young daughters even enjoy watching along seeing you taking things apart they've never seen opened up before. I like to think you might also teach them that, just because something doesn't turn on anymore, doesn't mean it can't be repaired 😊 Thanks for all the hard work of making these videos!

Lovely happy, fascinating and educational channel, I love it. I wish I were clever enough to be able to use a good deal of the equipment in your workshop. I still have to pull out the manual to figure out how to make my TTI 1010 function generator do stuff. Yes, I know, I'm a rank amateur in the electronics department but I have built quite a nice engineering workshop 😊 Keep the great videos coming Mark, thanks.

A fantastic range of equipment! I have to make do with rather basic stuff. Although it's worth pointing out to vintage radio hobbyists that you can achieve a lot with very little, such as simple soldering tools and a basic multimeter, pocket oscilloscope and perhaps a second-hand signal generator.

@@MendItMark I have done it with some older machines I have. I used free Macrium software and usb to sata cable. The macrium software is neat because it allows you to clone from a larger hdd to a smaller ssd. Very handy if you have a larger drive but just a small partition. Macrium automatically resizes the partition. Just do it, the hardware gets a new lease of life and boots in second. Just clone and then unplug old drive and plug in the new. Nothing else. I didnt even remove the old drive, just taped the ssd where it fit.
