I don't think so. I think she's focused on getting rid of their biggest piece of debt, especially since she's already making 2 extra mortgage payments per year. Although it came from a tragedy, that money was an opportunity to help get that mortgage paid off, possibly by the time he's ready to retire, so retirement funds aren't being spent on that. My house is paid off, and that's a feeling that I can't even describe. I couldn't imagine paying a mortgage at her age, or retirement age.

@maryfields1382 most states consider inheritance separate property. It becomes marital property only if it gets "co-mingled" with spouse's assets or jointly owned assets. If he put the money into a jointly owned investment account then it's now marital property. If it's only in his own account it's his separate property. I can't think of any state where inheritance is "community property". There's a reason the in-law who left the money left it to only their son / grandson / nephew / brother / cousin and not son + wife/ grandson + wife / nephew + wife/ brother + wife / cousin + wife etc

This is exactly where the issue really lies. From her point of view ( my guess is she is watching a lot of Dave videos) where he tells people to pay off their mortgage when that isn’t really the best idea for building wealth. Especially if they have a low mortgage rate. Maybe that is good advice for people that have trouble with staying out of debt but it’s not the smartest investment strategy. Every comment section goes straight to the gender war bs that is currently being pushed by charlatans and assets. This call isn’t that, she is being influenced by this Ramsey strategy of paying off the mortgage, the husband is correct to put it elsewhere.

@@topsykretts2264legally, you are incorrect. Depending on your religion and belief, you may or may not be correct. Doesn’t matter if you are in a common law or community property state, non-commingled assets are not marital property. Now, put that money into paying off the home, bam, it’s commingled. Look, women wanted this. They fraught for this. The laws are not one way if it’s a man and the opposite if it’s a women.
