Yup don't, short answer. I sold 5 restaurants to a couple about 5 years ago and I warned them not to run it together. They divorced a year later. There will always be someone putting in more work and that is how fights start. Keep business and family separate, some do succeed in running a business together but it's not easy. Not worth the pain.

Set boundaries. Determine who is in charge of what. ... Commit to the business. Periodically check in with your partner. ... Define your roles. Focus on each other's strengths as you define your roles. ... Respect and trust your partner. ... Hold team meetings.

My husband started a Landscaping business in the past year. He always calls it "ours". He seeks my support, ideas, and I help with advertising some of the purchasing decisions as we are still small but growing fast. I like my roles to be small, but still important. He values my part in the company, but I never feel the need to act as the boss.

It all depends on the person. There are people who stand by you even when everything falls apart and there are people who blame others (even Thier parents or spouses) for every little mistake but claim all the success when things are going well. Since it's a business , it can become a blockbuster, failure or remain average.... Ask yourself, if your other half will stick with you if everything falls apart or will you stick with him if everything falls apart.... Try to feel it.... Like you are in debt and business isn't making any profit..... See yourself in that state. If both of you can calmly stick together even in that state, then go ahead. But still keep responsibity and accountability.

Great advice! Know strengths because you know who as more speaking power over certain functions and separate your roles and don't mix them up. When communicating announce what role your speaking as. I'm coming to you as husband or I'm coming to you as a owner, etc.

Ya, it can be done. I run a small business smoothly with my wife. We have a clear understand if each other's roles, and the best way to optimize our profit as a group. The hard part is you gotta stay super respectful of each other and never forget that your spouse is always your spouse. Never just a business partner. We are very involved in counseling, and have been working on our relationship for a long time. That is really important. You need great communication. If you don't have a peaceful, and respectful relationship with good communication, you probably shouldn't go into business with your spouse.

I think Dave would say your wife doesn't have a business. Your wife has a hobby. And hobbies get budgeted by both spouses. Same for my business. I have a business "buffer" or emergency fund. As long as I'm making money my wife doesn't chime in on daily operations. I can do whatever I want as long as bills are paid and we are making money. But if I were to destroy the business money and start tapping into our personal money, my wife and I have an agreement that she is now involved in my business at that point. She will have a say, and keep me accountable, and we will process every decision together until the personal emergency fund is returned and the business is funding itself again

She needs to put him in his place. If you can't do that then don't work with family/friends. It's risky for the relationships but if you can't throw your weight around when necessary then you risk the business as well.

Don’t listen to Dave for relationship advice. Don’t go into business with your man. A woman will not respect a male who needs her help and the male will resent needing help. Men tend to leave starter wife and find the one they really want whom they wouldn’t dare asking for help.
