A better return on an educational investment would be to go to trade school and become a plumber or electrician. The problem with David’s statement is he is assuming that only people that disagree with him are trolls or people that don’t know what they are talking about ...which is false. Vanguard, schwab, goldman, etc. all have stated that fees will eat up your wealth compounding over the long term and generally will have a tough time beating the market. Dave is a genius in his methods of getting out of debt and also is correct that people don’t even save for the future (saving rate is more important than the discussion between index and mutual funds), but his advice around investing has been proven in math to be false by many smart people. I bet he doesn’t mention the fee costs .

They are still collection of stocks but follow a specific index ; they typically have lower fees but you still want the yield to be greater than 12% over 10yrs period. Index funds lose to mutual funds even after fees, so be careful and factor in total cost of expenses including transactions. Stock is a big win for me though.

Beating the S&P 500 by 1% is not much to brag about. If you invest in actively managed mutual funds, you have fees of 1-2% plus whatever the money manager is charging. It’s hard to beat an S&P index fund. If you want something a little riskier buy a growth ETF.

I'm getting 15 dividend Pay checks, however I'm up 135 % this year.About 470k this yr. good dividend paying portfolio .although I use an F.A so buy as much as you can and wait for the rebound Only the brave gets rewarded in these times!

30 year track record: Dave’s investment: 11.3% S&P: 10.9% What variable does Dave not factor in? 5.75% commissions every time you put money into loaded mutual funds and an expense ratios that are almost certainly at least 0.5% higher than index funds and/or ETFs. So, mathematically, you are at best breaking even in comparison to investing in index funds AND behaviorally you have to actually continuously search for actively managed mutual funds that have **past tense** outperformed the S&P500. I am a massive fan of Dave’s principles and teach them myself. Like he says, the most important factor in saving for retirement is actually investing and doing so consistently. That said, his investment approach and the funds are not in the best interests of consumers.

"The Simple Path to Wealth" by JL Collins is a very light introduction into market investing. "Boglehead's Guide to Investing" is another step up from there with more detailed information. Between those two you should get a decent grasp of major investing options and why these authors in the above two books disagree with mutual fund usage promoted by Dave and rather promote index fund usage(like Warren Buffett). We know it's a bit intimidating but it's really simple if you take it step by step---read the books on the subject given and then open an account at a place like Vanguard. It's somewhat like opening a bank account and then choosing where to put your money. If you need any other help we'd be glad to aid you in learning more so no one takes your money via fees and you understand for yourself how and what you're doing with your money. It's really great that you want to start so young---I wish I had! It'll pay off so much in the end to plan long term like you're doing as long as things generally continue as they have in the past.

Past performance is not indicative of future results. Trying to pick mutual funds is not going to guarantee beating anything no matter their track record, and most of them are very similar in holdings (within a category) anyways. When I first bought mutual funds, I used basically the same strategy that Ramsey is describing, and the funds I found which had great performance in the last 5 years both miserably underperformed the sp500. I learned it is better to just use ETFs, you get better performance and liquidity on virtually the same holdings due to lower fees. Investing really isn't hard, but most advisers push people towards mutual funds even though they are mostly obsolete imo because brokers make commissions on people buying into them.
