I have been keeping a journal/diary for over 30 years, and it started with a red spiral notebook and a crystal Bic pen. I started writing because I had no one I could talk to about the thoughts and feelings swimming through my mind, without them judging, ridiculing, or minimizing my thoughts and feelings. I realized quickly that getting my thoughts out on paper was therapeutic, and the physical act of writing helped me make sense of everything, and helped in the thinking process of resolving difficulties or in truly understanding what the root was of everything I was thinking and feeling. My used and unused journal stash is huge, as is my collection of ink pens that I love writing with. Having a pretty journal and nice pens to write with also helps, at least for me. It's the little things sometimes.

I am too shy , dreadful and inconsistent to write about my true core feelings without feeling guilty or awkward. Therefore i used fictional characters for diaries and storie, according Oscar wilde's suggestion: "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth". That's my creative hack to keep a journal....or at least one of some kind.
