I think by the end the Child was leading the Adult: “Hold your light, Eleven; lead me through each gentle step by step…” His adult self is asking his child self to guide him back. The adult self is the one with the trauma. In this case I’d say he’s re referring to “The Child”(eleven) before it has “the trauma.” Eleven knew who he was and once the event happened he grew further away from that self. Now after years of the trauma exacerbating, his Adult self is calling for Eleven to guide him home; back to who he was and to be come who he will be.

Till 1, and 1, are 1, 11... Lyrical genius there. so beautiful. to reconnect with that 11 year old child and heal that trauma to become one and whole again. 11 is when his mom made the decision to send him to live with his dad in Michigan. She wanted him to live a normal childhood and be a kid rather than wait on her and take care of her as much as he did. Least that's what my memory recalls from his book.

This track always hits hard, but you really have to understand that when it came out we Tool fans had NO idea of what it was talking about. We didn’t know anything about Maynard’s mom or his life before the band, and they were notoriously secretive about their lyrics and song meanings. It was really a trip years later when we started getting details in songs like Judith and Wings 1&2 (and also information in the media, etc.) to then go back to this track and have it run me over like a freight train.

To me the first 2 albums Opiate and Undertow are about confronting your demons and issues and the resulting friction that comes from it. Aenema is about confronting and accepting those issues to develop and use the tools to progress past those issues and heeling your younger undeveloped self. Lateralus is about transcendence and everything after is about further development and macrocosmic development. You can really see Maynard’s life played out and develop throughout his career. Its a beautiful thing to see how far he’s come

I hear him not only having compassion for his inner child, but reassuring him that he did a good job holding onto his identity and not letting his trauma completely consume him. He references Eleven “protecting his light” and wanting Eleven to guide him step-by-step through his healing process, bc he’s acknowledging how strong he was as a child to get to where he is now, and he’s trying to summon that strength now. The stuff that happened in his childhood wasn’t his fault and he protected his light the best he could. That’s why I think Jambi connects to this song in the way that he wouldn’t give up his trauma bc it made him who is today and he still summons the strength of Eleven to keep pushing forward.

Trauma doesn't make us stronger, healing does. We're like bones, we get stronger at the broken places, but we need to be treated and kept safe first.
@HeartSupport3 ай бұрын
From Riri: @charleysage5827 Hi there, When we are young, in most of the cases, we tend to be bold and ambitious because we are still innocent and we didn't meet situations or people that would make us question ourselves, or the way we saw the world back then. So in this way the younger self was unshaken and indeed much stronger. But, as we grow up, life hits us and it shakes us pretty bad, then we start to have doubts, worries and traumas to fight with, and it takes a lot of energy and effort. And adding to it the PTSD, it makes it even harder, to the point of hell as you said. But it doesn't mean that you can't try to heal and to get stronger again. You had some awful experiences, and I'm truly sorry for that, but maybe you can help others who went through the same. And the fact that you made it this far, it shows how strong you are. Maybe even stronger than when you were younger, because then, the challenges were not this big as now. We are always here if you need to talk about anything. I wish the best for you!
@HeartSupport3 ай бұрын
From chillmortally: @charleysage5827 Hi there, I agree with everything, @Riri. We view trauma as a nightmare. PTSD can help us work on our strengths & weaknesses. Memories are strange because they come and go. We interpret memories as something bad or good. The past doesn't determine if you are a weak person. You are a stronger person now because you fought trauma in the past with the best you can as a child. When you grow up, you gain some wisdom when you make a mistake in your life.
