A lot of veterans, me included, identify with this song because we are trained to be these violent "monsters" and when we are doing our jobs, we become those monsters that are full of adrenaline, on a blood lust because we lost a buddy earlier, then we come home after a deployment and everyone loves us, they're hugging us and thanking us for our service, its almost like were some popular or famous person. Thats why so many of us identify with this song. To us we are popular monsters. This song literally describes how most of us as veterans see ourselves.

I'm a retired vet myself, but not a combat vet. I was an Air Force crew chief. I can relate to at least the part about people always thanking you for your service. I used to get it a lot when I was still serving and would go off base for lunch breaks. People would even pay for our meals or treat us to desserts and stuff just because we were in uniform. When a lot of the GWOT related action slowed down, I'd also get a number of "Welcome back!" in addition to "Thank you for your service", even if I hadn't recently been on any deployments.

And the void in our souls after many of the things we have experienced. I know that everyone has their demons, and some can't handle them, but as someone who's been through a lot in life before my service time, compared to the things I dealt with while serving...they just don't compare. We lose a piece of ourselves..some lose themselves completely. As someone who has PTSD and nearly ended it all in a very bad way 1 night...please know that you are not alone. Your brothers and sisters are still there for you, and there are programs that really can help you to cope. Not even just to say dealing with depression...there are programs that can help you deal with the fact that you just aren't yourself anymore. Anyway, from one veteran to another, thank you for your service. Freedom isn't free...too many forget that.

I've managed my depression for about 35 years now and it's rare for a song (or literally anything) to embody what a depressive episode feels like to me. I've listened to this song probably 50 times now and it's like somebody finally gave me the words to describe what I feel. I still get chills, still choke up, and still listen on repeat. It's ok to ask for help. It does get better.

When you said, “people like me this way, people like my brokenness”… my god, that blew my mind… it’s insane how much I relate to that. The part that always makes me lose it is after he returns from being the werewolf and is looking around the courthouse, likely asking himself “what did I just do”… then his daughter is there to comfort him, bring his innocence back, and let him know he’s not a monster to her. I relate to that so much with my two beautiful sons. Tears everytime

Ronnie also talk alot about mental health in his lyrics. The little girl is his real daughter. He really turned his life around for real when she was born in 2012. He got sober in 2008-2009 but real, real change came with her. He has btw sole custody of her so I guess its more to him than the public sees

Never have I been able to relate to every single line in a song, until this. Ronnie tells his story here, but at the same time tells mine. Word for word. Thankfully I’m a little better since this time last year when I discovered this song, at my lowest point. Quite confronting and I cried and cried listening to it. But at the same time it validated the way I felt which in some way was comforting. Since then, I have immersed myself into Ronnie’s music. I have a small group of people that have saved my life. Without him knowing, Ronnie is a part of that circle. His music has become a coping mechanism for me to escape from the “struggles from this bullshit” I face each day. Hope everyone finds the same comfort and inspiration through Ronnie’s music and how he has risen to where he is now after facing so much adversity in his past. People may not like him, he certainly has an opinion on most things, but his incredible musical ability and talent is undeniable. Mental Health is such an important thing in my life. Looking forward to you connecting with more of Ronnie’s music as he is always vulnerable and expresses his emotions through his vocal performances beautifully, sometimes hauntingly.

My response was simple, at least I thought so. "Welcome to battleground me. Population one, objective? Survive". At some point you either make peace with yourself, broken or not, or you lose the fight with everything else. We become the monsters we have to be, and forget the people we were supposed to be.

I've commented on your reactions before; so yes, as a fellow mental therapist, I definitely can see the struggle to identify one's true self especially when the world is telling a person who they should be, how they should feel, etc. I think the most important thing is to listen to the individual, see where they are coming from and try to establish a baseline of trust and rapport before just straight calling them out. Ronnie has been working so long on defining himself, and so I love seeing and hearing his songs as this is therapy, this is how he is getting out what is inside.

From lu2910: @StephenKersker Reading your response, I want you to know that I am so proud of you for taking accountability in wanting to be better, but know that you cannot blame yourself for coping in the ways you knew best and you're struggles are not something that you should feel guilt and shame over. Having anxiety is something that creates problems we need to solve, and gives us anxiety over how we're solving the problem. To recognize that it is a vicious cycle and to then have to find a way to break that cycle is much easier said that done. To even be able to look past such anxieties when it has such a hold on you is something that takes serious guts, you are so strong for that. Even though I have not met you, I know that you are not a failure and there is nothing wrong with who you are. Everyone in the world always has some flaw, some secret hidden in their closet, something that makes them imperfect, yet that does not mean they ought to hide themself away and shame themself until they become perfect. Right now, right where you are, you are enough. Anything in your mind, any voice that tells you otherwise is a lie. You are not insufficient in any way, you are someone who is strong, brave, and will see a victory over this battle. The truth is that most people feel so utterly broken beyond repair. I feel it most days, and most people just push it down, cover it up, or find any way to distract others from the fact that they feel so broken and inadequate. To acknowledge and fight against this lie is the most freeing and best thing that you could ever do for yourself. I am proud of you for exactly who you are, right where you are. When the anxious thoughts try to tell you that you are miles away from where you should be or try to pick apart everything about you, cling to the truth that **you are loved.** No matter how loud the voices get, don't give up. The person you see in the mirror is not someone who is broken beyond repair, but someone who is enough, worthy of love, and will do amazing and great things. Cling to this truth my friend, I know that this is a battle you will win <3

From reem182: @StephenKersker You are not alone in your brokenness, my friend. And all those feelings of guilt, shame, and self-deprecation can feel completely impossible to overcome, because in a way, we feel like we deserve to sit in those emotions. I've struggled a lot with insecurity too, and for most of my life I've walked around feeling like I need to cower and retreat into some safe space that doesn't actually exist. I hope that you can see the value and beauty of who you are like I can. I know that might sound crazy, because we don't know each other, but as a fellow struggling human who has felt the darkness of guilt and self-pity for a long time, I want to tell you that those emotions do not determine your worth. You are SO MUCH MORE beautiful and valuable than you feel, and even just by sharing part of your struggles with me, your life has proved itself to be precious and inspiring to others. Because despite whatever those thoughts scream at you, you are NOT alone, you are NOT simply broken, and you are deserving of a life filled with hope and the simple peace of a new day. I'm broken too--we all are, really. We're broken, struggling, imperfect people who are all trying our best to feel the joys of life. But I know that those joys are there for you just like they are for anyone else, it just might look different for you as it does for me. But hope is not a fool's errand, and the simple fact that you are still alive proves to me that you deserve tomorrow. And while you are in this season, however long it takes, know that I am here for you and you are loved a lot more than you probably feel. I am praying for you in this moment and you are not alone so long as you have breath in your lungs. Thank you for sharing and for being exactly who you are, my friend.

First of all, love your reactions! You should definitely go down the rabbit hole with Falling in Reverse. They make exclusively amazing music and videos. I would love to see your reaction to their reimagined version of Last Resort by Papa Roach and all their other songs (e.g. Watch the World burn, Ronald, Voices in my head, Zombified, etc.)

Thank you for this. I fell in love with this band when I heard this song, and it hits so hard every time I hear it. But your video helped me think of it in a whole new way, with a different layer of meaning about the reluctance to heal. You made something special even more special. And that's a real gift. This was awesome.

I think "the Drug in me is you" and "I'm not a Vampire" would be right up your alley. Especially please if you do those two, do the original first and watch the reimagined or revamped version after. They are so beautifully changed 10 years later. Oh and something different. I think The Pretty Reckless "Make me wanna die" is something for you too. :) Thanks for your reactions

This song is what battling with mental health really feels like. They encompass it well. Especially when you keep trying to tell people that you need help and they keep saying it’s just a phase or just situational and it will get better. He is trying to tell his people that he needs to change something so he can get better but they dismiss him.

If you have never reacted to Ronnie, you have a lot of content ahead of you :) I look forward to all your reactions. I recommend Last Resort next. Also each song can sound completely different. So don't expect a certain "sound" from Falling in Reverse.

I honestly feel like this song is more than just an amazing piece of art. I feel like it's a window into my mind. I'm retired from the Army and all the trauma I went through as a young man and even as a child made me a powerful tool in combat but a terrible soldier in garrison. Loved to get a reaction from someone that can give insight. Thanks for the video.

From Shan: @MrYungtrigga570 Hi Friend, I have to say, I don't really listen to this genre of music but reading the lyrics to this song really moved me as well. I'm glad that you have this song that is able to help you to let your emotions out. Sometimes a good cry can feel therapeutic. Music just has a way of speaking to our hearts by beautifully expressing our emotions in ways that we can't express ourselves. As someone who has experienced depression as well I can relate to what it feels like to feel so much hurt but also to feel nothing at the same time. You are not alone friend. There are others that can relate to both you and to this song. I understand how belittling it can feel to have people brush off your feelings as a stage or phase. But I want to let you know that here, you are seen, you are heard, and you are understood. What you feel is real and your mental health is important. You are important. And I hope that you are able to find the tools one day to feel better supported and eventually to feel okay again - keep fighting :white_heart:

From NateTriesAgain: @MrYungtrigga570 So challenging, friend. It's so hard to be in a place where you feel like you're on the brink of breaking down because you just want to feel SOMETHING. There's almost a fantasy of letting it all fall apart, because maybe it would shake you, wake you up, cause CHANGE, cause EMOTION. It's a terribly lonely place to be when you aren't even connected to yourself. You feel lost. Like existence is "out there", and you're trapped somewhere inside behind layers and layers of distance, and you can "see" life happening, but you can't feel it. It is a prison. But you don't even experience it as such. It's just like being numb to your own suffering. Which....is such a curious concept in and of itself. Anyways, I hear you and can relate. It's hard when we go through seasons of feeling like days and weeks and months are all a blur, and our life is just this soup of nothingness that all blends together. What is the point of living if we aren't even really ALIVE?! And those thoughts can get dangerous. I know them myself. I'm thankful you post here because there's something about expression and connection. When we can see one another, be seen by one another, that we can have a door sometimes opened to us back to ourselves. What you're doing here in finding music that expresses these pieces of you is also brilliant. I find that music can actually be a tool that moves me into different emotions, when I let it, when I am present, when I engage. And I see you doing that here. Well done on both fronts! Thank you for posting. I see you, I hear you. You matter. Even when you feel trapped. You are worth fighting for, persevering for. Keep going! -nate, heartsupport staff

There are so many Active Military, Veterans and their families feel like this so often. The spouses feel the pain of their loved one and not knowing how to help. We do what we can until we feel helpless. We went to a Jelly Roll concert and you could just hear the pain in his songs. But I love the song and pray for all those that need it somehow, someway or somewhere!
