We did it. We reached the end of the Twilight Saga.
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright made it through the final installment in the Twilight franchise, from the horror-scene birth, to the creepy CGI baby, to the nightmare that is imprinting. But at least Kristen Stewart finally gets to have a little fun! And there's some kinda-cool action scenes (even if none of them actually happen) to talk about. And Jonathan gets to be done with the torture of the toxic, dysfunctional love-triangle-turned-weird-in-law-situation that is Bella, Edward, and Jacob.

If you consider this franchise from Charlie's perspective, it becomes downright horrifying. His daughter gets married, barely out of high school, at 18, to her boyfriend, the same person who caused her to be depressed for months on end after he abandoned her for her protection. Then, he hears that she was hospitalised on her honeymoon, and next time he sees her, her eyes have changed colour, and she's obviously not the same person. Add to Jacob revealing his Werewolf form to him, and growing older while Bella lives forever, always looking like a teenager, and you have yourself a psychological horror.

My dad had a friend who saw me as a newborn and told my dad, in that moment, "She is going to be my wife". Years later, I am married to someone my age, and that friend hasn't been allowed in my parents lives since he left that day he said that to my dad. It's creepy, that's a fact. Edit: I didn't expect so many likes lol. For those who are curious, this "friend" had a lot of mental issues and claimed I was going to marry him with the utmost seriousness, and it absolutely freaked my dad out. When he retold this story to me, after I was grown and married for a few years, he still was super creeped out by it. It made him super protective, and he taught me about keeping creeps out of my life which was useful, as this "friend" was the first of at least seven people who would creep on me, most of them appearing in my late teens/young adult years, and one as recently as a month ago.

And the Cullens think it's funny that Bella is beating on Jacob for imprinting on her child? What if she killed him then Bella & the Cullens would've been exterminated by Jacob's pack Bella's choices would've destroyed an entire family. Jacob's dad Billy would've been devastated so would Charley because both fathers have lost their children on Bella's account of wanting to be a vampire so she can tell everyone that was in her human life to kiss her ass. And speaking of toxic relationship look at her & Edward their relationship isn't love Bella loves Edward for what he is, what he can give her & Edward is nothing but a control freak.

According to Stephanie Meyer, she was taking pity on the people who for some reason preferred Jacob to Edward. Someone that, to her eyes, had literally nothing going for him while Edward had everything. So everything prior to this was her trying to make him more appealing as an acknowledgement of her fans, and this was her attempting to give the shippers a consolation prize. At that time, I was in an abusive/toxic relationship with a man who in hindsight turned out to be a narcissist and maybe even a sociopath. I know there are narcissists and sociopaths out there who are self-aware and try their best to behave morally, but he did not. He brainwashed, manipulated, and gaslit me. He took my agency away and made me believe that no one in the world loved me as much as he did (not even my family and I have very loving parents and sisters) and that without him there would be no love in my life. All my other relationships suffered while I was with him. I basically became the person he wanted me to be, depending on him for everything. My family and friends absolutely hated him and he made me dislike my friends and family, because "no one understands how much he loved me and how misunderstood he is" blegh. He was the main character in my life. I related so much to Bella and always thought how accurately Twilight portrayed "real love" in the movies as well. And even Bella's night terrors didn't seem over the top to me at the time because I had similar break downs (while awake). I was overly emotional and my life was super dramatic (I didn't realize that he was the one making it that way). Fast forward to now. Man, I was really brainwashed to believe that this is what love looks like. I never understood why people made fun of Twilight because to me it portrayed parts of my relationship so accurately. I thought this was love. Man was I wrong. Thank you Jonathan and Alan for opening my eyes to the toxic relationships in Twilight. This is not romantic, this is freaking garbage! I enjoyed watching your Twilight series commentary, some parts of your analysis were real eye-openers. Thank you!

For those who don’t understand, they used a CGI baby because they had many failed attempts with using a real baby. The babies were moving around and just being babies. I'll point out one of the redeeming qualities of Twilight, which I think isn't talked about enough. It's one of the (very) few pieces of media with a female werewolf. Leah is such a great character, and the books go into a lot more detail about her feelings of alienation in this male-dominated pack of dudebro werewolves, the leader of which is her ex (Sam) who imprinted on someone else. Leah is the white wolf in the movies, and she's constantly being rejected by her younger brother (Ceth) who looks up to Sam and Jacob et al. She's also generally rejected by her pack, and that's a constant nightmare because they're all telepathically connected when in wolf form. When Bella hits Ceth during the "Nessie" confrontation, Leah is the one snuggling up to Ceth, making sure he's okay. In the flash-forward fight scene, Ceth is the orange werewolf who's killed and Leah starts howling. I love her in the books and wish they had shown her more in the movies. In fact, I wish all the supporting characters in this series had their own stories fleshed out instead of the silly love/hate triangle. Who doesn't want to read about a psychic who ends up in a mental institution in the 1800s before becoming a vampire, or a vampire doctor whose empathy just won't let him kill humans for food, or the naive romantic who goes after her rapists when she gets her vampire powers? Instead, we get this toxic trio who wouldn't know maturity if it bit them on the nose. What a shame Meyer made these choices!

Leah ( and to an extent rosalie) really is a an accidental great part of the series, and it’s really telling what kind of writer smeyer is since Leah is written to be the opposite of a great ; in short her ( and Rosalie) are the designated scary sues of the series ( characters whose sole purpose of existence is to be crapped on by the author in order to make the main character look good in comparison). Instead smeyer straight up accidentally wrote a character who’s far more sympathetic and interesting than Bella could ever be.

The whole "I don't want this baby who killed you" IS a real-life thing and it's pretty horrifying. My best friend from childhood works in a maternity hospital, and once she had this horrible story of a perfectly healthy mom who went into labour and it started to go bad after she delivered the baby. She went into reanimation, then sceptic shock. All the while during his wife's agony, the husband was telling my friend how much he loved his wife, how he could not live without her, and how SHE wanted the child and he kinda got along with it because he loved her so much and she was going to die and he would be left alone with this baby he did not want that much. After like 23 hours, she passed away. My friend and the hospital crew had to do checkups on the dad after this horrible day. They did not do these only out of concern for poor bloke's mental health but for the baby, they were genuinely scared that he might hurt her or abandon her - even making plan for a possible adoption. Hopefully, the dad had a great support system and he grew to love his and his late wife's daughter. Upon hearing the story, my boyfriend and I went "nope, we're never having a baby".

Another pushback in defense of Edward: Edward was the reluctant party about having sex. He didn't anticipate pregnancy, but he wanted to wait till she was a vampire in case something bad happens. And she begged and pleaded and cajoled him into having sex. I think this is important to remember. But that is the extent to which my defense of Edward extends. He is, in general, terrible.
@laranadesign4764
@laranadesign4764 2 жыл бұрын
Right in that she didn't respect his decision to wait. Had their genders been switched, viewers would see it as unfair. Pushing your partner to have sex (married or not) is garbage. If you can't level with your hearts and minds, leave the body/flesh out of the equation. ESPECIALLY since he couldn't fully enjoy it (and told her that). I wouldn't want my partner to fake it or not enjoy it. WTF message is that? "We are married now, so his (or her) body is mine." 😑😠 and now you also get to feel guilty about the bruises.🙄
@plipplop1769
@plipplop1769 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it made me slightly uncomfortable to see the two celebrating over her finally getting sex, since that sends a pretty gross message imo of the other party is wrong if they are uncomfortable with doing something to you or engaging in sexual behaviour, and the wife is justified in constantly pushing and pushing. It's like they're Charlie, Bella is Jacob, Edward is Bella, and rather than blatant sexual assault it's simply disrespect for consent. I'd rather they just focus on Edward's fixation on telling Bella that he knows SHE doesn't want sex, agreed he should not tell her what she wants. But instead they focus more on he's not giving her what she wants and THAT'S wrong, which I wholeheartedly disagree with.

Oh man, the first part of this video, when they are talking about Bella being pregnant and at risk, really hit home for me. When my mum was pregnant with my brother, she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of melanosarcoma (skin cancer) that had already spread to her lymph nodes. The medical advice they got at the time was that she should abort and immediately start treatment, to improve her chances of survival. I was only 6 at the time, so I don't remember a huge amount of what was going on, but I remember it being a sad and scary time. Props to my Mum and Dad, there was never any argument or disagreement between them - they chose to face and fight the battle together. In the end, they chose to continue the pregnancy - she had surgery to remove the primary tumour and all the local lymph nodes, and then had my brother, and then started treatment afterwards. 37 years later I still have my baby brother AND my mum and dad, so it was the right call :)

It’s been a very long time since I’ve read a Twilight book, but I remember there being a conversation about imprinting between Jacob and one of his friends WHO IMPRINTED ON A THREE YEAR OLD. It’s one of those things from that series that’s stuck so clearly in my mind for over a decade.

@@shyviolet3852 Im pretty sure werewolves keep transforming when they are around vampires, which most likely doesn't let them age normally, and the thing Jacob (unwillingly) imprinted on is a literal newborn immortal child of the man and family he (rightfully) hates. Basically he is kinda enslaved to this group of vampires that he hates because he imprinted on a newborn baby. Twilight is messed tf up, the definition of horror.
@kestrelraptorial689
@kestrelraptorial689 9 ай бұрын
Also . . . that's not what imprinting is in nature. Imprinting IS a thing that happens in real-life, but how this series depicts it is completely wrong. Imprinting is what it's called some newborn animals (common with baby birds actually) instantly bond with and depend on the first living creature they see after they are born (or hatch, which is the same thing, just out of a hard-shelled egg), which is almost always their mother, as caretaker and protector until they are old enough to start learning to fend for themselves. Then it ends. This is the reason, actually, why people who raise orphaned baby birds now usually use a hand-puppet of the head of a bird of the same species as the babies, because when they're just born, they don't have the ability to recognize the difference between a bird parent and a human caretaker, and with baby birds that caretakers plan to release into the wild once they are old enough to fly and forage or hunt for themselves, they shouldn't still have bonded with a human first thing, even though imprinting will have ended by then, because there would still be lasting effects (and most birds have a poor sense of smell), so the scent of a human is insignificant (though the same is not true with baby mammals, of course).

Another problem that I realized watching Edward admitting he always underestimated Bella, is how much he saw himself as superior to her due to his supernatural status. He only acknowledges this and respects her as an equal because of the big change in power dynamics. Bella is a vampire that can kick his ass now, she's no longer a "fragile" inferior human. He can't use her humanity as an exuse to manipulate/gaslight her anymore, so he starts kissing up. "You're not a weak mortal human anymore (and you're able to beat me), so now I (mostly) respect your autonomy as a person."

I was 16 and I remember having the cohesive thought while watching it "Okay, this is a different direction an- oh shit people are actually dying? Okay okay let's see where this goes, this is great! What can they do with this?" and then it was revealed to be a vision and someone in the theater shouted out "SHUT THE FRUNT DOOR!" and I couldn't have agreed with an outburst more. Ironically this whole exercise finally helped me understand why fans get so excited about Twilight! I always thought it was boring, but you really highlighted all the nuances that went under my radar. Fans don’t read this kind of story in spite of unhealthy relationships, but because of them. They WANT the manipulations, the controlling behavior, the possessiveness, the threats of harm, the love-bombing, the leading on, the coming just to the edge of cheating without crossing the line but stressing out every corner of the love triangle in the process. This series is a psychological war zone with very sexy romantic sniper rifle fire and grenade-throwing. Why did I never see it this way before?

So much of that is tied in with the mormon culture Meyers grew up in. Reducing women to wives and mothers means the only things girls are left to dream about are getting married and having babies, and they expect their husband to make all the decisions in the marriage, so the only control they get over anything in their lives is the tradition that the moms pick the kids' names. So, a lot of young girls who've been raised like that have a *lot* of strong feelings about their planned baby names, and it regularly causes drama (oh no, they "stole" my name!), etc etc. So yeah. Bella's reaction to her stupid baby name (Renesmee is just... oh honey, no) being replaced with a nickname is almost definitely something Meyers considers normal.

I think the whole issue with the Bella- Edward relationship is that it was clearly an imbalance of power from the start, purely because of Edward being a vampire. Once Bella became a vampire herself the power became equal, and somehow the relationship worked better. Although, in real life, it would be more likely that someone like Edward would freak out that Bella was on the same level as him, and probably become more abusive.

I think Jacob imprinting on Renesmee would have been more palatable if their relationship had STAYED a niece/uncle relationship or brother/sister relationship instead of developing later on as a romantic relationship. It would make more sense for him to just be protective of her, rather than him destined to be her future lover. I also would have liked to see the other aspects of imprinting that Jacob mentioned, like being a protector, brother or friend, in other pairings to further cement the “being what she needs” instead of “being what she needs until she falls in love with me”. I also would have liked to see some same sex imprinting, both romantic and platonic, but unfortunately, considering the fact that Meyers in Mormon, the only time you would get that is in fanfiction. I like the idea of soulmates not always having to be romantic or hetero, because irl it’s not like that.

Then he was ultimately "accountable" when she turned into a vampire because she was final form and there was no way for her to ever leave him at that point. Within the books' lore, those who are changed have an almost psychic bond with the one who changed them and somehow can't leave or be without them. It's inconsistent what the relationship is, but it's shown to be incredibly difficult to leave them. It is a "trapping" situation, regardless of how sinister or innocent the act is. Carlisle changed Edward at his mother's request, Rosalie at Edward's request, Emmett at Rosalie's request, and Esme as his match. Alice had no memory of who changed her so it's almost like she's an orphan. Jasper, I think, was the only one who managed to leave those who changed him, and that might have only been because he had more control over himself and because his change was as a war asset.

The thing that drives me the most crazy about Edward's accountability moment is that it doesn't come until AFTER Bella is turned into a vampire, because I've always read his underestimating her as "oh she's a dumb weak human, of course she can't do anything for herself" and that's something he does even when the challenge in question isn't one of physical strength or resilience (where the fact that she's a squishy human would be a legitimate issue). There SHOULD have been a moment where he saw human-Bella as being fully his equal and worthy of his respect. But there wasn't - she didn't become his equal until she became a vampire. And that's gross.

He never saw her as his equal because she still had a soul - so he “knew” she was better than him.

@@tybrown7112 That's what he SAYS, certainly, but actions speak louder than words - and his actions very much suggest that he thinks she's lesser than him.

Edward could be acting superior because he doesn't want Bella to know he is inferior. Not like the difference matters all that much. Both options are horrible and Bella should stay away.

He did have that moment in Eclilse, when he realized he was too controlling and decided to let her go to LA Push if she wanted. But the thing to remember us the root of his controlling behavior was his need to protect her. Once she became a vampire and capable of protecting herself, it was moot.

I'm so glad someone finally says the birth scene is traumatizing. I am traumatized by birth scenes and lost consciousness for the first time of my life when I watched this movie. Really just, fainted on spot and almost fell off the bed we were sitting on. It happened again with other movies. When I confess that I fainted watching Twilight, people are confused. But this scene? It's so much worse than any horror movie because it wasn't supposed to be. It was supposed to be a cheesy bad romance, not this. And 12 years later, I'm so relieved to hear that I'm not weird, that this scene actually is horrible.

I’m so sorry you had to endure that. I don’t think it’s weird to find birth scenes traumatizing at all bc they can be disturbing. It’s understandable to me. I heard some other ppl said they were scared of pregnancy after watching this movie. I was scared to watch that scene even during my Twilight phase (which I obviously outgrew after I got bored of it and then realized how problematic, antiquated, and messed up that godforsaken series is). One of my friends was also scared to see it. and I still am scared now. People who think it’s weird to faint after seeing the birth scene in Breaking Dawn traumatizing are sus to me. I think that scene is enough to make someone faint considering Bella died of childbirth and the fetus was sucking the life out of her.

You just reminded me of when I took child development as a class in school and there was one boy and about thirty girls who had chosen it. We watched a very graphic birth video one lesson and the poor boy had to run out and throw up.

Coming from a woman who's given birth twice, childbirth can be scary, especially if you don't know what's happening fully. Outside of the whole discussion of raising said children and just focusing on the birthing, do your research, talk to medical professionals, and just be aware that there will be pain. It's been years since and though I don't remember everything, there have been things that have stuck in my memory. I definitely wish I was calmer during my first labor, but I can forgive myself since it was my first. Obviously, though, real pregnancy and childbirth is NOT like what Bella had to go through. The baby's not a blood-thirsty leech that will tear your body apart and shatter half your bones.

For many of us who read the books, when we got to the imprint part, we were really upset. Not only is it weird, it was a lazy way to close that plot hole. It would have been a 100% better ending had Jacob attacked, started a war between the Cullens and the wolves, and everyone ended up dead and had it been revealed that we had been reading a historical account by the Volturi.

Basically like taking Italian language as a minor, all things considered. I literally *should've* known that, given all the Italian Opera and essays about the Italian Renaissance and Madrigals I've written. My deepest, genuine, apologies. I, being American, didn't even consider that anyone would notice and/or care 🤣😭🤣

The fight scene is pretty much the best part of all the movies, and it’s because if you’ve read the books you know it didn’t happen that way, so you’re in a whole “WTF” moment until the second that you realize it’s Alice showing Aro her vision of the future if he continues with his choices. (Which doesn’t address that Renesmee and the wolves are supposed to be black holes for Alice, but it’s a pretty fun scene so who cares. LOL)

How I saw Jacob's love and protection for their daughter was scary. Even when I read the book I was like no he went from being the abuser who will try to force you to have a abortion to the "protector" that if the mom doesn't do what I want then I'm going to take her away from the mom. I was never worried about her with her daughter but his reaction of controlling her daughter and Bella was scary. Her reaction was totally justified is this is a dangerous man and he should be no where near my child. Get a restraining order.
