What is the secret that allowed Muslims to flourish into the Golden Ages as Europe sank into the Dark Ages? While people throughout the West were thought to be possessed by demons when dealing with depression, Muslims turned to Islamic teachings. Dr. Rania Awaad elaborates on the different scholars who initiated treatments that are now known as “therapy”!
This series is in collaboration with the Stanford Muslim Mental Health Lab.

it's not we forget about our past scholars contributions, it's that we DON'T EVEN KNOW they existed in the first hand! all because the colonization and how they formed our educational system! really, it's soooo frustrating that i never learn this at school... even in university all the credits goes to the western scholars and barely mention Muslims contribution!! ughhh jazakallah Dr Rania. you're as awesome as always!! 💞💞💞

Thank you for sharing the truth with us. I'd really love to read the books Dr. Awaad mentioned in the video as well as her book with Stanford. With this, my faith grows stronger because I realize that Islam is not a religion that solely focus on spiritual aspect, but also all aspects of health. Once again, thank you. From the bottom of my heart, I really couldn't thank you enough for the hard work and sincerity you put in this masterpiece work.

Very intersting series. 😁 I want to use it for my work as psychologist. I searched in the internet about islam and psychotherapy, but most of the articles are written by muslim non-psychologists. This is like an engineer writes an article about hair cutting. This is not his field. I hope we can interact with the psychologist in this video. I have some questions to her. For example: 1) Is it possible, that people with a lot of ilm and a strong iman can suffer mental illnesses like Depression? The deen of Allah should make a person satisfied and happy. 2) Are there examples, where the prophet (saw) advice someone to use a cognitive technique to cope with a crisis? Example: treating perfectionsim, self-esteem problems or Social anxieties? 3) Are there narrations of sahabas, which had PTSD like symptoms? What did the prophet (saw) advice them? Psychology is a really awkward science for me. It would be really helpful for me, if I can find possibilities, how I can connect this science more with our faith. I know a lot of muslims who are skeptical because of the same reasons.
@safiya8930
@safiya8930 3 жыл бұрын
Well I do know that the answer to 1) is yes! Think of prophet Yaqoub AS and think of when the Seal of the Prophets(Muhammad) SAW was sad after Khadija’s death. Or during the 4 month period prior to the revelation of Surah Duha. Or when Sayyidatina Aisha RA faced slander for a month.

Assalamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh!!! I am curious of the position Islam holds of illnesses that are caused by genetic issues. For instance, something like Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is known to cause anxiety and a host of other "what are "deemed" as mental health issues" which really in actuality do not fall into that category because the issues are a result of what the faulty chromosomes do to specific pathways in the body. For instance, many people have problems with adrenaline who have EDS. Their "flight and fight" mechanism will trigger when they are not really in danger, and this can be mistakenly diagnosed as a mental health issue such as say generalized anxiety disorder when it is really not. There is no cure known for EDS because science has yet to develop mechanisms for replacing faulty chromosomes in the genes they know are involved, and in some cases the specific genes and chromosomes are not yet known. I have seen many people with EDS say, especially women, they were told to seek mental health assistance, before they were diagnosed with EDS, when in reality they were misdiagnosed with the true underlying cause being unidentified. I am just curious about the Islamic perspective of these types of illnesses. So with EDS, the body is broken because of faulty collagen, but generally people maintain average or above average intelligence with the more common types of EDS. I strongly believe that many people are suffering this way, in the way of misdiagnosis of mental health issues when there is really another underlying condition. And, how do we get cure for this type of illness when at best right now, doctors can only treat the symptoms, like providing say heart related medicines to treat the adrenaline issues, when the diagnosis is right and the person knows they have EDS. Dr. Awaad, could you please comment to this. I would really appreciate your perspective on this particular topic and I know it is a hard topic because I am asking about something that seemingly has no cure, just administrations for the symptoms. Am I missing something? Jazak Allah Khairan!!!

@@nylakhan5658 Jazak Allah Khair!!! Alhamdulillah for the good and challenging times of the Dunya!!! Please bear the length of this, as it really is important. In 2019, I had a simple rash on my left foot. I went to a Dermatologist where I saw 3 doctors. A Podiatrist next. Then, an EDS Specialist and another Dermatologist. Finally, a Holistic MD who finally treated the issue. Seven medical doctors in total. Along that trail, I was prescribed topical steroids. With each physician, an increase in the strengths and types of topical steroid's being prescribed and also shots and oral steroids too. After the first topical steroid, the rash on my left foot changed. The rash was on both feet when I saw the Podiatrist. I went to him for a second opinion. Two months into his treatment, the Podiatrist said he could not help me. He thought it was autoimmune and fired me as a patient. No more than a few days after this, my hands broke out. I called him for help, and he would not even talk to me. So, I found and saw the last Dermatologist. There was some theory it was a form of Pustular Psoriasis. This did not make sense to me. If it was autoimmune, all these steroids should be suppressing my immune system, yes? That is what steroids do. So, we are basically into the better part of one year going through this process. The last Dermatologist had a steroid compounded with coal tar oil. I used it for two days and stopped. I am sure you know what gas smells like. Imagine having that taste in your mouth constantly. It is not pleasant. The topical implements were being absorbed through the skin into my bloodstream or I would not have been able to taste the medicine. As to the rash the steroids caused, there was fiery skin, blisters, ulcerations, and excessive skin peeling and it would repeat over and over; like a constant, severe 2nd degree sunburn. This new rash increased in speed with each phase of the rash as each stronger steroid was used. Wallahi!!! I was in so, so much pain. I had to wear medical gloves when I went out to protect my hands from transferable disease (Covid toward the end of this). I could not even wear normal shoes, only flip flops with soft cotton socks. Other unfavorable things happened too, but to save time and space I will leave those out of this writing. I knew something was really off track with this treatment process. So, I started doing research and it took time. But, by the leave of Allah SWT, I finally found a public medicine document from NIH that stated in paraphrase, "exercise caution prescribing topical steroids to treat patients with even BENIGN collagen disorders. They can cause unhealing ulcerations." I was being burned, over and over, worse and worse and the cause of the initial rash was not being treated at all. My EDS presentation is not benign, and I should have never been prescribed topical steroids. That was the root cause of this burning rash. And, I had to endure Red Skin Syndrome after I stopped using the topical steroids too. The skin on my feet is still not 100%. I have succumbed to the fact that this skin will never really be "normal for me" again. There is some disfiguration from where fat melted out of Piezogenic Papules (herniations of the dermis layer of the skin where fat comes through and causes a bump on the skin - a common symptom of EDS). And, the skin is not healthy. You might ask why did I share all of this? First, this was enough to drive a sane person insane. Honestly!!! It should not be the end result of any medical practitioners to make their patients hurt physically or mentally. Next, the As-Sahaba RA discussed most things very openly to teach and help each other. Finally, we desperately NEED more healthcare providers that are versed about collagen disorders, which includes EDS. I fear doctors now, terribly. There was no recourse for me because I have a rare ailment. So, it is hopefully a Fitnah that will protect me from punishment now and later, InshaAllah. Thank you for asking about my well-being. May Allah SWT be please with you and bless you in this life and the next, Ameen. Assalamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh to you and all who might read this.
