So the John deere strike was actually a little more complicated,the strike happen right before winter which is when the company gets backlogged with orders and repairs for next season and do to decades of consolidation they had almost no wiggle room to fuck around otherwise the agricultural sector that almost have a monopoly on for larger equipment would get fucked,so timing of the stike played a key role in its success
@BossKowbel
@BossKowbel 2 жыл бұрын
As a John Deere employee (not at one of the factories on strike), I can confirm that winter is indeed our busy season and is where we see our highest turnover in contract employees. We understandably struggled to find new faces to fill the gaps in skilled manpower, but the recent strikes have reverberated throughout the factories that aren’t unionized, too. For instance, the plant I work at is now evaluating pay raises twice a year (instead of once) and has handed out almost $10,000 in bonuses within the last five weeks.

Attempting to ethically consume products by my own code of ethics is a form of mental exercise. Just like I can't completely avoid junk food and pizza in real life, I can't completely avoid bad ethical dilemmas with my game consumption. It doesn't matter if I can't be perfect though. I'm doing this for myself and my own peace of mind as a person. I'm exercising my ethical muscles, because I want to be healthy for me. It doesn't really matter if my boycotts of Ubisoft and Activision-Blizzard won't destroy their company. I was never under the false belief that my sale would change any minds in corporate America. I am just avoiding those companies to be a consistent person that sticks to my own personal beliefs. I may fuck up on my ethical diet from time to time because I just don'thave access to enough neutral or good options, but I'm not going out of my way to eat as much garbage as possible out of spite. I'm still making conscious decisions instead of just giving into fatalism.
@originalscreenname44

Exactly this. People don’t understand that not purchasing from bad actors has intrinsic benefits and only want to focus on the extrinsic possibilities, which is just not going to help. I don’t buy from Ubisoft, Activision, EA, Bethesda, WB Games, TakeTwo strictly because I don’t agree with the business practices for their games. And sure, Pat’s right about it being easy when they don’t make things you want because I only really care about maybe one franchise from each of these companies, but I don’t want to buy from them because they’ve made it very obvious they only want to keep their hands in my wallet after purchase. The only thing you can do is purchase what is comfortable for you. I only say things to people who are directly impacted by a company’s bad practices and still continue to give them their money.

@@originalscreenname44 What benefits does not purchasing the "bad" (I'm assuming you mean immoral) product provide for anyone? Are you saying you should inly boycott out of a need to not be directly fucked by a company? Your example doesn't make sense in any other context because it sounds like you are boycotting due to how these companies try to fleece *you* specifically, but that sounds like a different argument from the one about the ethical choices you may or may not be able to make as a consumer.
@originalscreenname44
@originalscreenname44 2 жыл бұрын
@@shupasopni I can't tell what intrinsic benefits are going to be for someone because they differ from person to person, but I can explain mine. I mentioned why I don't buy from those companies because that's my reasoning and it still comes with the same people acting as if it's not a reason at all. For me, I know I've saved money by not buying games from those companies that would give me a bad product on purpose. That means when something like GTA Definitive Edition or Battlefield 2042 come out, I'm not someone who has to deal with the shitstorm. It also makes me less likely to succumb to FOMO because I already have the thought that that company is going to fuck me over In my head due to their past actions. Now it does fit the conversation because that is why I boycott specifically for myself. I don't like to support methods of hypercapitalism where the only goal is to continually take people's money without putting in the effort to even get it in the first place. People can boycott for whatever reason they want (some of them are stupid, but it's their money so who cares). Each person gets a certain intrinsic benefit of not supporting a company that doesn't do things they support. What that is is going to be different from person to person.

It's literally everything. You've had controversial people on the podcast in the past. You've promoted games/companies/products that have troubling aspects. These things are unavoidable across a long enough timeline. Sometimes those aspects are small - 'one staff member did something bad' - sometimes it's something big - 'widespread abuse claims'. You can't attach yourself to any sizable organisation or population without getting some dirt falling one or two steps away from you. Doesn't help that these events are almost always incredibly simplified and decontextualised into digestible tidbits. Try not to be evil. Just try. Maybe you'll not do too bad.

Exactly, you take the good with the bad, it's cool these games are being made and can be enjoyed, but how some are created, not to mention some of the stuff they encourage, is rough, kind of like famous celebrities who brought such good entertainment or charity to the world while also having an egregious reputation. It really is the "duality/multiplicity" thing in full bore, unhinged, absolutely two-faced damn near everywhere, endless, inescapable cognitive dissonance. I mean, I don't blame Woolie or Pat very much, as Square Enix deals in FFXIV, Respawn being funded and distributed by EA, FromSoft under Activision for so long, not to mention the earlier/classic games of many major brands.... I've been cruel and demanding, but also generous and loving, hopefully more the latter recently. Local or independent anything helps ease the conscience, potential for ethical help. The political side gets infinitely more unbearable, as the "bad" ones cast a pall over the rest of a crew or associated whatever. That "punish everybody for one, apple ruins the batch" mentality is also unfortunately applied to age groups, gender, social media, fandoms, opinions, companies, socioeconomic status, veterans, immigrants, race.... Countless stereotypes and prejudice, seemingly unending, a constant of the universe, it seems sometimes. That in general I will call out or step off of, actively avoid by going for more constructive, less presumptous routes, but the "ethical consumption" conundrum/cognitive dissonance I won't fight that much anymore, I feel strangely too exposed to that these days, the opposite of my wide-eyed, naive, impossibly uninformed childhood. To fix this problem of me helping the you-know-what canceled companies or people, I'll likely be supporting even harder/more enthusiastically the causes, influencers, and companies I feel good or at least better about than most, not simply political, far from that, probably, because politics are so easy to demonize and sandbag others' accomplishments, charity, character based on those disagreements, even as left as I am. I like to think my artistic preferences lean pretty okay, in terms of especially taste and *somewhat* in the ever-important ethics category.

Decent conversation, all things considered. Something that must be said, though: boycotting is all well and good, but it doesn't have to be the only viable way of going against a company. Specifically, if a company has employees on strike, /listen to their requests/. It's very possible there's a Worker's Fund one can donate to, or some other list of things that fans can do to support them. I feel too many people just boycott something and do nothing else but shame those who aren't boycotting, when there's definitely more substantial they can do. Hell, I've seen cases where employees want players to still buy the games, and people don't know about it because they just do what's easy for them. The minority are the people, usually at the very top, who have all sorts of nefarious skeletons in their closets. It's way more likely that when you buy their games you're supporting mostly decent, hard working people, and probably a few bad ones. There's no good reason to believe that watching things like Arcane or playing Ruined King will only support bad people.

Exactly. I'm probably talking outta my ass here, but I don't think any company as a whole is outright evil. It's those few individuals within them--most likely at the top, like you said--that do these awful things we hear about and once that information comes out and the word spreads (especially as fast as it spreads on social media), they become the public faces of the company and virtually everyone associates them with those individuals. We absolutely should be protesting against both, but if you have to pick one, the one that completely removes bodily autonomy from human beings is a bit more high priority. There's also the fact that choosing not to partake in something is and should be about personal ethics. I don't refuse to play Ubisoft games, because I think it'll ruin its stock by my protest. I do it, because I want to be an equitable and fair person on a personal level, and Ubisoft clashes with my own personal code of ethics. I'm not gonna look down on people for playing games they like (although, you could do a lot better for consistentcy than Ubisoft), but it's just not for me and never will be again until the people that perpetrated those ethical problems are gone. Same with Activision-Blizzard. I'm out. They're not getting my money. The companies I do support have their own share of issues, but those issues are less important on my personal code of ethics. Also, Pat mentions Skullgirls as a problem, but unlike big companies, when Mike Z got ousted as a big ole creeper, he was out of the company in a matter of days. "There is no ethical consumption under capitalism" is not some sort of cop-out that only applies to small rural areas with one Wal-Mart for people to do all there shopping at and nothing else. It's the shoes on your feet and the clothes on your back being made in poorer countries where the workers work for slave wages and in grueling conditions. It's your favorite video game being made by a team that was exhausted, abused, and worked 100 hours weeks with no overtime under the excuse of "passion" and "teamwork". You can't even separate art from the artist because 1: No one actually does it. 2: You end up ignoring clear red flags by scumbags by insisting on thinking that an artists' personality, interests, politics, etc. have NO affect on the works they create. H.P. Lovecraft was a great science fiction horror writer and Sci-Fi today would not exists the way it does without him and his influence. He was also notoriously, FLAGRANTLY racist and actively put his racism in his work. That isn't subjective interpretation, that is fact. Whether it's an individual or a large corporation, something you've bought whether it was food, clothes, entertainment, whatever, has exploited someone. So unless you vet every single product you buy or make it yourself, you more often than not supporting a system of exploitation somewhere. And the hard truth is that there is nothing you can do as an individual to stop that. Choosing to not buy from Activision-Blizzard is great and all, but how does that help the people abused? How does that STOP the abusers and make sure they face punishment for their wrongdoing? This is why boycotts don't work: A company can remain solvent longer than you can afford to not pay your rent. But a strike? Strikes are so effective an entire multi-million dollar businesses exists specifically to stop them from happening. There's a reason Amazon and similar companies spends millions of dollars on union busting every year. The only why to make consumption ethical under capitalism, is to unionize, organize, and work our asses off to make sure no one gets abused. Because no one has to be abused. But it is far from easy and requires active and constant vigilance. The real question is, are we a society, as a people ready to fight that fight?

On the riot thing I personally can’t enjoy riot anymore due to their involvement with developing the social credit system in China, but at the end of the day it’s your choice on weather you want to enjoy the product not mine, all I can say is that I strongly disagree with your enjoyment and wish for you to never talk to me about it ever again. This is coming from some one that spent thousands of hours on league and still checks updates to see if my old mains are good again. Still not going to play because fuck riot.

I've done my part to not support cartoon villains, but trying to never consume anything made at someone elses expense or never give money to a bad person is futile. If you wanted to truly never buy anything from a company that sucks, you would have to go entirely off the grid because EVERY COMPANY has something. The computer or phone you're using to yell at people for buying things that are good but made by people who suck was almost guaranteed to have been made in a sweatshop across the planet from you. It just isn't feasible to consume 100% ethically in 1st world society, thus the phrase.
@dumbsterdives
@dumbsterdives 2 жыл бұрын
"No ethical consumption under capitalism" doesnt translate to "never consume anything", its telling you that you have to accept that unless the revolution happens right this instant and you replace everything you've ever owned afterward, you will be consuming something made immorally. This is also why the "yet you participate in society. curious!" comic exists.

As unrealistic as it is to completely avoid consuming anything with a complicated ethical background (even though not all pieces behind them are straight up evil) I find media the easiest to boycott as opposed to needs like tap water and food since I just pirate whatever "thing I want" is. Even if it's morbid curiosity, like the latest Poke'mans.

Its easy when alot of their business practices are overtly anti-consumer and you just don't like their products anyways. "I already hated triple-A games before it was cool" Something I chose to make no compromise on early on is absolutely f*ck every single game with microtransactions - and I mean this was as early as Team Fortress 2 ear before it was considered "a big issue" by most people.
